I saw you reverted my edit which added a link to the album. Is there a style guide or something that says you should not link tracks to their original album? Thanks. Eldumpo (talk) 09:16, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In the page Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums/Album article style advice#Style and form, there are two sections that, in addition to the overlink rule, imply that tracks should not be linked if not necessary: "Links should only be created to song articles that don't exist if the song merits the creation of an article per the notability guidelines at Wikipedia:Notability (music)#Songs," and then "If a track has an article of its own, the track name should link to that article." Note that the article explicitly mentions the track's own article. If you were to link a song that doesn't have a page to its parent album just for the sake of it, you would have to do that for every song mentioned in the article (for consistency), which would then create the overlink problem. MiaHarris74 (talk) 14:43, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for providing some links, although there doesn’t seem to be anything saying that there should not be a link to the album instead. Over-linking is more about duplicate links within same article, or linking to very basic/obvious items, which would not apply to these song/album links we are discussing? Eldumpo (talk) 17:15, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The link I sent you specifically mentions a "track that has an article of its own" as the only reason to link it. What was your reason to do so? And why did you link "Revelations", but not "Where Eagles Dare", a song from the same album which appears first on the track listing? Shouldn't that be the track to link in this case? And why didn't you do the same with other songs from other albums, such as "For the Greater Good of God", which should then link to A Matter of Life and Death? Or "The Clansman", or "Sign of the Cross"? I know this isn't a proper argument, but I think it fits here: no other article on Wikipedia follows this. Your edit opens the door to a lot of unnecessary questions, and I don't really see the benefit for readers in linking songs that don't have their own page, not even a section in their parent album's page.

Please, do share if you have a good reason for it though. MiaHarris74 (talk) 17:25, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The link says if there is a song title it should be linked, but not that a link to an album should not be placed (although it doesn’t say it should be). I happened to only link one song, but the logic of what I did could then be applied to others, but doesn’t mean I need to automatically make such other changes. As it happens I have saved some work by not doing so.Eldumpo (talk) 19:06, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
