Welcome to the 2011 WikiCup!
Hello, happy new year and welcome to the 2011 WikiCup! Your submissions' page can be found here and instructions of how to update the page can be found here and on the submissions' page itself. From the submissions' page, a bot will update the main scoresheet. Our rules have been very slightly updated from last year; the full rules can be found here. Please remember that you can only receive points for content on which you have done significant work in 2011; nominations of work from last year and "drive-by" nominations will not be awarded points. Signups are going to remain open through January, so if you know of anyone who would like to take part, please direct them to Wikipedia:WikiCup/2011 signups. The judges can be contacted on the WikiCup talk page, on their respective talk pages, or by email. Other than that, we will be in contact at the end of every month with the newsletter. If you want to stop or start receiving newsletters, please remove your name from or add your name to this list. Good luck! J Milburn and The ed17 12:58, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

I replied to your comment. Spongie555 (talk) 05:29, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- According to websites I read supposedly the North Korean team was shamed for winning the world cup beacuse there was no responses of them after the world cup and they where not seen after. Later it was proven that they left the world cup to practice for the Asian games and where to busy practicing in north Korea and it was a lie that where shamed. Spongie555 (talk) 05:42, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- Are you still reviewing this nomination? There hasn't been any actively with it in a while. Spongie555 (talk) 06:30, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
- I recommend you check with User:Rwxrwxrwx, the original reviewer, instead. I am no longer reviewing the nomination because my interpretation of the North Korean authorities' statements differs from yours, so I would prefer to leave the decision about this DYK to a third party. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 06:37, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Attacks
Hi - I just declined 1 of the 4 pages tagged as db-attack, but noticed that you deleted at least one of the others. The claims seem to be referenced and the articles have thus far stood the test of time and have been edited by many contributors. Since it seems like we should be consistant with all 4 I wanted to mention it to you to confirm if you do feel they qualify as attacks. Regards, 7 04:18, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
- In the case of Edward French, I checked all the referenced sources:
- http://www.lcc.gc.ca/research_project/ica/pubs/besrep/part_2-en.asp -- Page not found
- http://www.multiline.com.au/~johnm/ethics/integrity2.htm -- Does not mention the subject
- http://www.library.mun.ca/qeii/cns/archives/exhibits.php -- Mentions the subject but does not support the sentence it referenced, nor does it identify the subject as having been convicted of any crimes
- http://www.releases.gov.nl.ca/releases/2002/just/1213n07.htm -- Does not mention the subject
- http://www.nopedo.org/english/pages/actualite12.html -- Page not found
- http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=story_29-5-2002_pg4_3 -- Does not mention the subject
So I feel confident that Edward French needed to be deleted at least based on the content as it existed at the time. Maybe the other pages that I haven't reviewed are better referenced. My deletion of Edward French was based on it being a negative unsourced BLP (without taking a position as to whether the statements in the article were true). If the allegations in the article are true, the page can be re-created with better sources. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 04:29, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, and agreed. I incorrectly assumed they were all exactly the same as the one I declined... but only the one I declined was actually found guilty and has working references. Regards, 7 04:39, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
DYK for Miracles (Jefferson Starship song)
On 7 January 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Miracles (Jefferson Starship song), which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that songwriter Marty Balin said that "Miracles", which became Jefferson Starship's biggest hit single, was originally perceived by the other band members as "pretty weird"? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |
... 10 years ago there was no DYK. Luckily that's changed, so thanks Victuallers (talk) 23:55, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
Hi, I have refactored the article and it seems now to address at least some of your concerns. Could you take a look and, if you feel so, comment at the AfD in regard? Thanks. --Cyclopiatalk 13:41, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
- The AfD closed as "no consensus" before I got a chance to see this. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 17:16, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
I was interested to see your article on this. I've got one strip from a newspaper somewhere round Everett, WA, that was used as packaging. Also in the packaging was a rather surreal sounding one called 'That's Jake' which I quite liked. Neither have been published over here - American cartoons don't come here much with the obvious exceptions of 'Hägar the Horrible' and 'Garfield', both of which fit the Brit sense of humour well. ('Red Meat' has a cult following, but I've never seen it in newspapers.) 'That's Jake' doesn't seem to have an article..... Peridon (talk) 19:15, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
- "That's Jake" is one I'm not familiar with; I don't think it ran in any of the newspapers I ever read regularly. It seems to have ended its run a few years ago. I actually don't see "Mister Boffo" that much anymore even though it is available on newspaper comics sites such as the Houston Chronicle's. Ironically, I was expecting to hear something about the Mister Boffo article I wrote today, but I expected it to be an AfD based on the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/National Standard Finance. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 02:36, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
- The one I've got has someone wearing a Southern/Western big hat, boxers or check shorts and an inner tube greeting a conventionally dressed (same type hat and cowboy waistcoat on the chap) at the door. He is saying, "You're just in time. Here's your canteloupe and your fork - we'll be releasing the badger shortly.". In the foreground is a group of people dressed as the speaker, hanging upside down by one foot, and holding melons on forks. Underneath is a box with a barred front panel, and a pair of eyes are looking out. Underneath I've just found a caption reading "Why you should never accept an invitation to a party honoring a holiday you've never heard of." I enjoy the surreal... As to the threats, there's a sudden silence from that quarter. Peridon (talk) 11:43, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
- The sudden silence is not hard to explain now. Unbeknownst to me, the user had been blocked for abusing multiple accounts. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 14:54, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Request on RPP
Apologies for bothering--I just looked through my watchlist for an admin who is editing right now, and you're the first I saw. I'm trying to hold back a voluminous tide of vandalism on Irvington High School (Fremont, California). I've had a request at WP:RPP for about 2 hours w/o action, which I know is normally an acceptable time period, but I'm reverting a dozen edits at a time, from simple misinformation, to generic vandalism, to racism to BLP violations. If you're still on, could you kindly take a look at semi- it if you agree? 07:05, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
- My mistake, it looks like I misjudged if you were on; another admin caught it now. Sorry to bother. Qwyrxian (talk) 07:19, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
- Right, I wasn't on at the time, but I do agree with the decision to semi-protect the page. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 02:27, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of User talk:Jewelrylife1
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on User talk:Jewelrylife1, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Manway (talk) 06:06, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
- The advertising content of that page was not written by me, and I don't think the content that I did write should have been deleted. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 07:06, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
Hello. The page in question contained (a) your note that the previous Talk page had been moved to User:Jewelrylife1, (b) a notification from you that User:Jewelrylife1 had been nominated for deletion, and (c) Jewelrylife1's advertisement. The User page had been deleted before I reviewed the Talk page and, to be honest, I didn't think (a) and (b) were relevant any more.
If you feel that I've made a mistake, please restore the page (or let me know and I'll do it). It's not a big deal either way. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 07:13, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, I have restored the page. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 07:18, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
- Not questioning your decision, Metropolitan. Explaining myself. This is why I speedy nominated:
- WP:UP#DELETE - A user's contributions that consist solely of a lone edit to their user page should not normally be speedy deleted unless it consists solely of spam or other speedy deletable material. And WP:REMOVED - In general, it is usual to avoid substantially editing another's user and user talk pages other than where it is likely edits are expected and/or will be helpful...Unsuitable pages, media and images in userspace may also be nominated for deletion or (if appropriate) speedy deleted, but special care should be taken as the user may be expecting leeway and take it personally, and there are a few exceptions.
- Regards, --Manway (talk) 17:32, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
DYK for Drop Squad
On 17 January 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Drop Squad, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. - I will try and review it at a later date; I'm not sure exactly when I will be able to do so. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 03:56, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up and for explaining it to me. I wasn't sure exactly what was happening- I had never seen that warning before.
Thanks again.
WikiCup 2011 January newsletter
We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!
A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Zane Malik
hello Metropolitan90. this is zane_malik1. i wanted your help to create an article as i am finding it difficlut to create a page as it keeps on goin up for speedy deletion, iam not sure what iam doing wron. i have read all the section on how to create a page and noteable person, but still am not getting anywere. i have attache the following page which i want to put up titled Zane malik, who is a friend i want to write about. please can you help me on what changes should be made to it or if you can put the page up 4 me, that would be much appreciated. the following information which i want to put up is: ( i will post the information to you in a few hours) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zane malik1 (talk • contribs)
- One problem here is that when your username is User:Zane malik1, and you are writing an article about someone named Zane Malik, it looks like you are writing about yourself, which is a conflict of interest. Even if Zane were your friend rather than yourself, that would still be a conflict of interest to some extent. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 15:28, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm not sure if you had noticed it, but the article creator had placed a hangon notice to the page and was attempting to add references. The last I saw, the references may not yet have qualified as reliable sources supporting notability, but there appeared to be a good faith attempt to contribute. Cheers. -- Tom N (tcncv) talk/contrib 02:57, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
- I have placed a note on User talk:Jeremiahwootendotcom offering to userfy the content if the user wants to work on it some more. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 02:15, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

DYK for A Teaspoon Every Four Hours
On 13 February 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article A Teaspoon Every Four Hours, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that A Teaspoon Every Four Hours, a play co-written by Jackie Mason, set a Broadway theatre record which may be broken next month by Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark? Hello! I have no idea to do anything on wikipedia (I'm not even sure if editing your page is the way I send you a message). I actually spent an hour yesterday trying to figure out how to nominate an article for deletion. Either way, don't worry about it at all. It was just an article I came across that was obviously written by the same person. I should have minded my own business. Sorry for wasting your time, and thank you very much for all you do! :) Boonshofter 23:04, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
- That's all right. If you later decide you want to nominate that article for deletion, or some other article, feel free to try again. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 23:20, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

I used TVV for the nomination, but somehow, it seems to have messed up the process once again. I'm about to fix the nomination as we speak. Sorry for any inconvenience. --Soccer-holicI hear voices in my head... 19:18, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
Hey, I wanted to say thank you for updating the Tony Burrello page. Bgwhite (talk) 18:12, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
I think we may not find out what he/she thinks about that MfD. The user appeared on Feb 12th, edited quite expertly (including RfD, AfD, and SPI) for six hours and hasn't been seen since - unless the user has reverted to IP editing or was a sock for some reason. Oddly, the editing finished with an SPI started, a signature in the evidence space but no evidence. (I accuse the gardener in the library with a sock...) Peridon (talk) 18:12, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
DYK for Tony Burrello
On 21 February 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Tony Burrello, which you created or substantially expanded. WikiCup 2011 February newsletter
So begins round two of the WikiCup! We now have eight pools, each with eight random contestants. This round will continue until the end of April, when the top two of each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers of those remaining, will make it to round three. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions) (first, with 487 points) and Hurricanehink (submissions) (second, with 459), who stormed the first round. Casliber (submissions) finished third with 223. Twelve others finished with over 100 points- well done to all of you! The final standings in round one can be seen here. A mere 8 points were required to reach round two; competition will no doubt be much more fierce this round, so be ready for a challenge! A special thanks goes, again, to Jarry1250 (submissions) for dealing with all bot work. This year's bot, as well as running smoothly, is doing some very helpful things that last year's did not. Also, thanks to Stone (submissions) for some helpful behind-the-scenes updating and number crunching.
Some news for those who are interested- March will see a GAN backlog elimination drive, which you are still free to join. Organised by WikiProject Good articles, the drive aims to minimise the GAN backlog and offers prizes to those who help out. Of course, you may well be able to claim WikiCup points for the articles you review as part of the drive. Also ongoing is the Great Backlog Drive, looking to work on clearing all of the backlogs on Wikipedia; again, incentives are offered, and the spirit of friendly competition is alive, while helping the encyclopedia is the ultimate aim. Though unrelated to the WikiCup, these may well be of interest to some of you.
Just a reminder of the rules; if you have done significant work on content this year and it is promoted in this round, you may claim for it. Also, anything that was promoted after the end of round one but before the beginning of round two may be claimed for in round two. Details of the rules can be found on this page. For those interested in statistics, a running total of claims can be seen here, and a very interesting table of that information (along with the highest scorers in each category) can be seen here. Good luck! John de Plessis
Why did you delete the John de Plessis article? It was not a "test page". I said it was from my sandbox, where I worked on it. Do you even bother to read the articles you're deleting? --Kenatipo speak! 04:48, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
- I did indeed read it. The full content, just before it was tagged for speedy deletion, was the words "from sandbox". If the content copied from the DNB had been included in the article at that time, I wouldn't have considered the article for deletion. It wasn't until after I deleted that page that you moved the biographical content from your sandbox to the page. The exact chronology was: 03:37, 9 March 2011 (UTC): article created with only text being "from sandbox"; 03:40, 9 March 2011 (UTC): article deleted; 03:42, 9 March 2011 (UTC): article re-created with content. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 04:57, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
- I wonder how many other articles you've deleted because you're trigger-happy. This episode leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. --Kenatipo speak! 05:29, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
- If you think my decision on this article, or any other articles I have deleted (see [1]), was in error, please feel free to bring it up for review at Wikipedia:Deletion review. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 05:46, 9 March 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the decent clues offered at the AFD. What was first nominated as an unsourced one-sentence stub has now become a decent and well sourced start class article. Perhaps you might look in at my progress and offer suggestions for a 5x expansion DYK? Thanks again, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 00:43, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
- I don't know if I have a good idea for a hook for this article, but good luck with the DYK nomination. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 01:17, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
- It almost seems that the best hook might be one dealing with the director and his choice of a giant killer trilobite. :) Thanks again for the clue that aided my search for sources. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 07:57, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
