Stadia/Stadiums

What does your OED say then? Because my one is from around the same time as yours and it says "stadia". I have a more up to date one at home, which I think says that either can be used, but "stadia" is the traditional plural. – Pee Jay 20:41, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You don't believe it's derived from Latin? You mean the "-ium" bit doesn't give it away for you? Anyway, the word originally came from Greek, but was adopted into the Latin language. – Pee Jay 22:13, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're talking rubbish now. The word was originally Greek, but since the English word is the same as the Latin word, it takes the same plural form. Same with bacterium/bacteria. – Pee Jay 22:20, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are overcomplicating things here. The current OED says (and I checked this today, so don't tell me I'm wrong) that either "stadia" or "stadiums" can be used as the plural of "stadium". It doesn't say which is more traditional, but it does say that either is correct. Let's leave it at that and leave things as they are. – Pee Jay 22:20, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
