File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Dr Elizabeth Garrett Anderson.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Stifle (talk) 15:02, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

{{helpme}} I would like some help with improving my new page about 'Female surgeons' which is in my sandbox) and preparing it for publication. Melba1 5th July 2009 Melba1 (talk) 08:19, 7 July 2009 (UTC) Melba1 (talk) 08:22, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Melba1! I'll link the sandbox here, so people can easily find it: User:Melba1/Sandbox. decltype (talk) 12:13, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The article at present does not have sufficient sources to support the information given, and therefore it is not suitable for inclusion on the live Wikipedia.
A topic must have "received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". "Significant coverage" means that sources address the subject directly in detail, and no original research is needed to extract the content. See WP:GNG for details of this. The present references are not about the actual topic of the article, so they do not constitute 'significant coverage'.
The article presently looks like original research, which is not permitted. It would require 'inline citations' to reliable sources - for my own tips on how to make these, see user:chzz/help/ref.
You might also want to read WP:FIRST, which explains more about making your first article.
For more help, you can either;

(edit conflict) Hi - I noticed you were looking for reliable sources for the article you are writing on Female surgeons. I had a quick search and came across some articles which may or may not be useful to you:

  • Carpenter, Louise (2009-03-08). "'Yes, I've got ovaries but I'm very alpha'". The Observer. Retrieved 2009-07-08. It takes a particular kind of person to survive the macho world of the operating theatre - and to write a book about it. Louise Carpenter meets surgeon and author Gabriel Weston
  • Stark, Jill (2009-01-11). "Queen of the cutting edge". The Age. Retrieved 2009-07-08. Interview with Wirginia Maixner, the third female to join the Royal College of Surgeon's neurosurgery program, and the first to run the Royal Children's Hospital
  • Goodchild, Sophie (2008-02-27). "Drive to attract more women into surgery". The Evening Standard. I haven't found a copy of this article freely available yet, but I have access to the full text through my work. A quote: "Figures obtained by the Evening Standard show that there are only 364 female consultants in Britain out of a total of more than 6,000. The Royal College had set an "ambitious" but "realistic" target of next year to increase the ratio of women surgeons to one in every five. Brain surgeon Helen Fernandes, who chairs the college's women in surgery committee, said the pool of medical talent was declining because female graduates were not applying for jobs in surgery. Ms Fernandes, the first female surgeon recruited by Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, said: "Women are ruling out surgery at an early stage because they wrongly believe it's too difficult to succeed. There are still pockets of chauvinistic behaviour but the reality is that women are their own worst enemy." {{cite news}}: |access-date= requires |url= (help)

I got these results with a LexisNexis search and a journal search for "female surgeon". I've only gone back to 2005, so I imagine there is more information available. All of them should be accessible to anyone (apart from the ones noted above). From the quick read I gave them, it seems like some of these might support the statements in your draft article, while others might provide additional information. I hope that some of them might be helpful to you. Please let me know if you need more information, or if any of the links don't work etc! --Kateshortforbob 12:32, 8 July 2009 (UTC) PS. I've taken the liberty of altering your "Help Me" notice to show that your query has been replied to. You can always re-add the Help Me template to this page, or ask questions at the Help Desk.[reply]

A tag has been placed on Dr Emmeline Hill requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Oxygen paradox

[edit]

Someone with scientific credentials needs to write a page on the "oxygen paradox", namely, that oxygen is essential to most forms of life, but is also poisonous in certain forms and concentrations.--Melba1 (talk) 01:54, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

{{helpme}} Please move to the incubator. --Melba1 (talk) 03:08, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Melba1!
I've moved your request for help here, to your own user page - we like to discuss 1:1 on your own page, and keep article talk pages for discussions between editors, re. the article. For one thing, this way, you get an alert when I leave you a new message.

So - re. Oxygen paradox - I can't see any actual content in the page history, except your suggesting that 'someone create an article' - so, there's nothing to move to the incubator, from there, at least.

Incubation is for articles already begun; I don't see anything. If I missed something, let me know.

Otherwise, you probably want to start a user-space draft or something.

For more help, you can either;

  • Leave a message on my own talk page; OR
  • Use a {{helpme}} - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
  • Talk to us live, with this or this.

The last of those is particularly useful - please try it; pop in now and say hello. Chzz  ►  03:42, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chzz :)

I am creating a new article @ http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User:Melba1/James_Martin_Brabazon#References and wondered if u have a minute u could check it over & make suggestions. (I'm not very good with inserting refs as u can see.)

Thanx in anticipation (Good luck at the World Cup!) Melba1 (talk) 08:13, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re. User:Melba1/James Martin Brabazon
First, I must ask - are you the subject of the article - or closely associated with the subject? If so, please read WP:AUTO - and I strongly recommend that you edit some other articles, before tackling the very difficult business of being neutral when you have a conflict of interest.
The biggest problem I see at the moment is a lack of independent reliable sources - brabazonarchive.com is a primary source, imdb is not a reliable source; the Independent piece is self-authored, and the others do not look independent.
I have added one 'fact' referenced to the newspaper, mostly to show how inline references work.
I also removed the heading at the top - that's not needed - and began with '''James Martin Brabazon''' (b. 18th February... - the three apostrophes go around the article subject, to put it in '''bold'''.
I hope this helps; please do feel free to ask more questions. Chzz  ►  08:41, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your recent contributions, such as Mindaugas Piecaitis. Getting started creating new articles on Wikipedia can be tricky, and you might like to try creating a draft version first, which you can then ask for feedback on if necessary, without the risk of speedy deletion. Do make sure you also read help available to you, including Your First Article and the Tutorial. You might also like to try the Article Wizard, which has an option to create a draft version. Thank you. -- Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 17:01, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A tag has been placed on Mindaugas Piecaitis requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. -- Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 17:05, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Melba - I saw your post about this at Renata3's talk page. She's a very busy person... If you're willing (since it's in your userspace, I wouldn't do this without your approval), I'd be happy to work on the article. Reference formatting has given me a lot of grief in the past too, some of my edit summaries include @*$#!&$% -s, so I'm quite sympathetic to the problem. Thanks for writing it, as Chzz says it will make a nice DYK. I can cough up a couple more third-party refs in Lithuanian, here's one in English [1] with career details. Novickas (talk) 19:44, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'd love to work on it. Will start soon. Doesn't he look like the sweetest guy ever?
But you shouldn't email the pic(s) to me, but rather have him send it/them to WP; see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission, specifically Wikipedia:Requesting_copyright_permission#When_permission_is_confirmed. It's a hairy business, you might want to contact one of the people listed at Category:Wikipedia OTRS volunteers. It might take a week or so to get processed...Later, Novickas (talk) 14:00, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, sorry for a late reply. I tend to forget things :) I will look into the article further. I found this bio, but do not have the time at this moment to dwell into it. Renata (talk) 16:56, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GetUp! as a partisan organisation?

[edit]

I'm personally avoiding putting any value judgements on the activities of GetUp!. Wiktionary defines partisan as "A fervent, sometimes militant, supporter or proponent of a party, cause, faction, person, or idea." Most of GetUp!'s activities would fall into the left leaning category. The thrust of my point was that since it is an organised group which involves itself in the political process (all be it not directly seeking political representation) it could be a categorised as a left wing group. We tend to like to put things into boxes, however in this case I think if the shoe fits then wear it. Ozdaren (talk) 20:18, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if that sounds confusing. What I was trying to say is GetUp! is a partisan group and it's also left wing. Ozdaren (talk) 11:01, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Harjot Singh has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Man whose notability is only temporary. Wikipedia is not a news website.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.  Blanchardb -MeMyEarsMyMouth- timed 02:49, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

About Rhoda Roberts

[edit]

Hi Melba1.
I was doing a little research to start "Vox Populi (SBS Current Affairs program)" earlier today, and noticed that Rhoda Roberts was the program's presenter from 1990 onwards.
I thought, "What, there's no Wikipedia article for Rhoda Roberts? How can that be? I'll write it when I get home."
Different computer: first GHit was your draft article. It would be the wrong thing to do, to start the article myself and ignore your work.
Would it be OK with you if I worked on your "userspace draft" and then moved it into "mainspace" later?

I saw your edit to Talk:Microglia asserting that "females don't have microglia" and am wondering on what basis you make such an assertion. Did you mean that no female of any species has microglia?--Quisqualis (talk) 03:10, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Quisqualis. I refer to studies of pain response in mice: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4772157/ "The research was conducted by teams from McGill University, The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), and Duke University, and looked at the longstanding theory that pain is transmitted from the site of injury or inflammation through the nervous system using an immune system cell called microglia. This new research shows that this is only true in male mice. Interfering with the function of microglia in a variety of different ways effectively blocked pain in male mice, but had no effect in female mice." https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/06/150629110800.htm There have also been clinical observations with human chronic pain sufferers. http://mpegmedia.abc.net.au/rn/podcast/2017/09/sfn_20170902.mp3 Melba1 (talk) 05:25, 20 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
