Babelfish translation

Hi Cele. Please include your original German sentences when you use Babelfish. Sometimes Babelfish translates very poorly. Maybe some people can understand the German. Thanks! Babelfish translation: Hallo Cele. Schließen Sie bitte Ihre ursprünglichen deutschen Sätze ein, wenn Sie Babelfish verwenden. Manchmal übersetzt Babelfish sehr schlecht. Möglicherweise können einige Leute den Deutschen verstehen. Danke! ~MDD4696 07:22, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Re: Image tagging Image:Lego-sannse.png

Unfortunately, fair use cannot be claimed for images solely on user pages. I've tagged the image Image:Lego-sannse.png that you uploaded as having unknown copyright status. You could try to contact the owners of the original site you retrieved it from to get permission, but without that it will be deleted. Thanks! ~MDD4696 02:37, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

I've deleted it. You might have seen from my comments there that I didn't expect it to stay for long - the "fair use" claim was a joke (see also above ;) -- sannse (talk) 15:41, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your RFA support

Hi Mdd4696/Archive 2! I have been on a refreshing wikibreak for the last week, so this is a belated thank-you for supporting my adminship nomination. You've seen enough of these before, so, simply: Happy new year (if that's your kind of thing)! jnothman talk 18:09, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

F-16 Fighting Falcons above New York City

Can you upload your improved version of "F-16 Fighting Falcons above New York City" (Image:F-16 Fighting Falcons above New York City v2.jpg) to Commons under the orginal filename (Image:F-16 Fighting Falcons above New York City.jpg)? In this way we can use one image, one filename, and one project location. Warmest regards --Neutralitytalk 04:31, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Sure. I wasn't sure if it was appropriate to overwrite the original image or not. Has there been a discussion on how to handle multiple versions of images on the FP nomination page? ~MDD4696 05:13, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Probably there has, but I can't really find it. If it's a technical improvement such as the one you made, there should be no problem with overwriting the file. Neutralitytalk 05:16, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Norwegian Defense Web Page information

In reference to your comment on my talk page: I have tried to find a tag which fits, but there isn't one and I don't know how to make one. I have emailed the administrators of www.mil.no and the reply was that all information on the page could be used as long as the source was mentioned. It wasn't too clear if this also applied to pictures, but pictures are information in my view. mil.no carries no copyright tags/claims. Wikipedia is intended for non-profit, educational use. I therefore do not see wikipedia as being in violation here. I only think it might be a problem if the information was misused.

This issue is probably also valid for all info/pictures from any Norwegian government web page. I am not sure about Norwegian copyright rules in general, but they are most likely the same as any other Western European country. I would like a special tag for Norwegian government/defense force pictures, but as I said I am not sure about how to make it or how to formulate the correct legal languate. If someone wants to check this stuff with odin.no or mil.no and then make a tag I would be very happy. Inge 16:59, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for contacting me. I did some more research and came up with a brief paper categorizing a number of countries by copyright law with regard to government works. It lists Norway as a country where there are not copyrights on government works.
The Commons states that "Photos of people may not be published without their consent unless either ... the image illustrates a current event of interest the general public." That may be a mistake--I don't see why past events of interest to the public would be excluded. A portion of Norwegian copyright law has been translated into English, available in HTML or PDF format. Also, the U.S. Library of Congress seems to have a good Norwegian Law portal set up as well.
I don't speak Norwegian, and I'm completely unfamiliar with their laws, but if you'd like to create a template for works of the Norwegian Government, those pages would be a good place to start. I'm sure there are people at [Wikipedia talk:Copyrights] who'd be willing to help you furthur.
If you have received permission from the site to license the work under the GFDL, take a look at Wikipedia:Successful requests for permission. I will tag the image as public domain as a work of the Norwegian Government for now, since they said it would be ok with attribution and this is a non-profit, educational use. If you have any furthur comments or questions, be sure to let me know!
This discussion will be copied to Image talk:Leif Welding-Olsen.jpg. ~MDD4696 22:48, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Re: Your image of Notre Dame

Hi Diliff. On this image's nomination you stated that you had a rectilinear projection of the image available for reference. I would like to see it and compare it to the cylindrical projection you mentioned. Could you let me know where I could find it? Thanks! ~MDD4696 01:08, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I haven't had a chance to upload it as I'm travelling at the moment and internet access is patchy. I'll try to get it up in a couple of days. Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 01:26, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

{{subst:Image source|Image:Leixlip_Castle.jpg}} ~MDD4696 04:45, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for your note on my talk page. I uploaded the image (and a second image, actually) some time ago, and was even less familiar at that time than I am now regarding image copyright and fair use. I'm afraid, even after reading the fair use summary I'm not much clearer. The no-for-profit part I think I'm pretty safe on, but the setting up in competition bit may be a little muddier. The page I took it from was essentially one with information on the town of Leixlip.
As far as I remember, I lifted the image from this website: http://www.kildare.ie/leixlip/places-of-interest/index.asp , which is the offical local government page.
Now, there's the situation. I hope you can help determine whether the images can be used legitimately, or should be removed?
Thanks again, Staples 15:07, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for taking the time to try and learn about copyright and fair use. The whole copyright situation is really a mess (at least in the U.S.) and there is a lot of ambiguity. This particular image falls under fair use, because the source website has a notice stating that the images may be used for non-commercial purposes. I've tagged the image--thanks for getting back to me! ~MDD4696 22:28, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for helping me keep an eye on this thing. I note with some alarm that you are attending my alma mater and hope that it's just coincidence and not indicative of anything... =) Powers 23:49, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Powers, I appreciated the note. If this concomitance means anything I'm sure it is that we make fine Wikipedians, being keepers of the peace and all. Really though, I came across the article from CollegeHumor, and considering some of the college-aged people I know... well, suffice to say that I expected worse. I'm just waiting for the link to be archived on CollegeHumor so that we can nominate it for deletion without interference (unless of course someone could prove to me that it wasn't a joke?). Anyways, thanks! ~MDD4696 00:47, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Beowulf. I just wanted to remind you to Wikipedia:Please do not bite the newcomers. Although Alexkillby has uploaded spam/advertisements, he is still a new user and may become a valuable contributor. It's really not worth starting a flame war over. I think he's gotten the hint: if he continues to upload advertisements or he harasses you, we can take the appropriate action through other channels to have him blocked or whatnot. Thanks! ~MDD4696 02:28, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

I know not to bite newcommers. But that particular newcomer ripped me a new <insert impolite term here> via email offline because he felt that I was criticizing his "right" to do so, making unfortunate comments about my own willingness to work on Wikipedia, and "what had I contributed". I very seldom bite first. - Beowulf314159 02:33, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
No problem. It's too bad that some people can be like that; I hope you don't take his attacks too personally! ~MDD4696 02:46, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
Nah, he gave his, I responded, books balance IMO unless and untill he starts again. I'll just go back to editing :) - Beowulf314159 02:52, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Comment on Mourne Mountains FPC: Comment If it is only a simple correction, you can just upload the edit over the original. We only really need to see edits if they differ significantly. ~MDD4696 04:06, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, it was pretty stupid uploading a separate version just for a rotation, I just assumed that's the way it worked. I'll list one for deletion at the conclusion of the vote. Regards Mark83 14:48, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

If you do not receive permission in the next 7 days it will be deleted. However, if you do, please tag it appropriately. It may fall under fair use, but you would have to look into that yourself. ~MDD4696 22:15, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Re: Spoken Wikipedia on Nightwish

Hi SoothingR. I noticed that you removed the Spoken Wikipedia template from the Nightwish article some time ago with no explanation, and marked it as a minor edit. I was curious as to why you did so. Please let me know on my talk page, thanks! ~MDD4696 02:46, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Of course I'd be more than happy to do so. As you might have noticed, Nightwish became a featured article. In its RFA, one person commented:
And my reply was:
I hope that this information about the removal of the spoken wikipedia box is sufficient to you.SoothingR 13:16, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick reply. I don't believe that the spoken articles should be removed because they are outdated, since they probably won't be recorded very often. I'd prefer to see an outdated recording that not to know there was one at all. Perhaps this would be a good topic of discussion on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia? As for the spoken box itself, I'm not sure what it looked like at the time, but it looks fine to me where it is now. There's actually a discussion about the template placement going on right now, if you have any comments. ~MDD4696 22:17, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Just out of curiosity, can anyone tell me how long spoken articles have been available for Wikipedia? Folajimi(talk)
Well, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia was created on 2005-04-12, if that helps. ~MDD4696 22:17, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

You'll be the first to know when I hear from them. Take care. --Howrealisreal 19:21, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for telling me so. Deryck C. 03:33, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

what do I need for the copyright??? I already added the source of the pic--JB 08:53, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Images need both source information so that the legality of its use on Wikipedia can be verified. The copyright tag makes it easier to categorize pages and saves people time (so they don't have to look up the copyright status themselves every time). The copyright tag is also important when users upload images they have not released anywhere else, because they need to specify the licensing information. The copyright notice at the web page you retrieved the image from (http://today.reuters.com/HelpAndInfo/Copyright.aspx) states that "Republication or redistribution of Reuters content, including by framing or similar means, is expressly prohibited without the prior written consent of Reuters."
The only way we could use it on Wikipedia is if you receive written permission from Reuters, or you claim it as fair use. If you do decide to claim it as a fair use image, tag it with {{Fairusein|ARTICLENAME}} and provide a fair use rationale similar to the one below:
== Fair use for [[ARTICLE NAME]] ==
The image linked here is claimed to be used under fair use as:
# Its inclusion adds significantly to the article because it shows the article's subject
# The photo is used non-commercially, for informational purposes only
# It is a historically significant photo
# It is of much lower resolution than the original, and copies made from it will be of inferior quality
# Its use is unlikely to affect its potential market or value
~~~~
Be sure to customize the rationale for this particular image. Also, please note that this image probably wouldn't qualify as fair use for the Park Place article, which is the only place that it is currently located. It doesn't show the park really... it might work at Live 8 concert, Barrie though. ~MDD4696 22:26, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
Re: Planetary habitability
Hi Mrdallaway. I was looking at Image:PlanetaryHabitability.ogg and I couldn't figure out what you meant by "Br Eng RP" in the accent section. It's "British English something." What's the RP mean? You may want to spell it out, as there are probably others who don't know what it means either. ~MDD4696 23:26, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
You're right. I'll add the link to Received pronunciation. Best Mrdallaway 12:15, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
I wonder if Mr. Dallaway can include a wikilink in the file info? (meaning, I don't know if it's possible to do.. I would suppose so, though)
The ironic thing is that I only know about RP b/c I'm a French major and the big French-English dictionary I use has an infobox on it as a "cultural tip."
The closest thing we Americans have to it would be called Network standard (scroll down to Ryan's post). Brits would all know what RP is, and quite possibly anyone living in a former British colony/commonwealth. I think you're right that many other Americans wouldn't. Re: Rapid Image Tagging
Hi Cohesion. I noticed that you tagged several hundred images at Wikipedia:Untagged Images, and in good time too! Thanks for the good work, but I have to ask—how are you tagging so quickly? I'm developing an image tagging tool, and I'm looking to see how others are working through this gigantic task. Thanks! ~MDD4696 00:56, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the complement, I had been looking at a number of little apps (mac osx) focusing around expanding the clipboard and/or copy paste functionality. None of them really seemed to work well because they had the assumption i would be copying things a lot that might change when what I really needed was a "palette" of canned messages. So, I went low tech and just made a folder with text clippings. If you aren't on mac, I don't know if windows or linux has them, I will give a brief explanation. If you select some text and drag it to your desktop it creates a small file, which when you drag it to a text area in any app is interpreted as pasting that text in at that point.
So, I just have that little folder sitting beside the browser with the tags with dates etc filled in, I only use it for no license and no source, and the associated edit descriptions; for the rest i manually type them in. - cohesiontalk 07:53, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
Hi Steinsky/Joe D. I reverted your edit to Template:Spoken Wikipedia because the heading text was colliding with the "Please read Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales's personal appeal" notice that only non-logged in users see. I'm not sure how you would edit the positioning so that it appears lower (and therefore below the notice) only for non-logged in users, but if you can figure it out, please go ahead and do it. I just thought that we should avoid having the header text there until we can figure out a solution. ~MDD4696 05:13, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, I didn't realise the sitenotice was still set! Joe D (t) 05:17, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
Hi Interiot. I have an idea for the new graphs you've added to your edit counter--a vertical red line showing the current time or day. This would let users more easily see what the average contribution rate is at the current time. ~MDD4696 00:49, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
Re: Image tagging
Hi Carnildo. I saw that you've been tagging a lot of images, and I was wondering if you did it all by hand or if you used a tool. I am developing a script that should help people over at Wikipedia:Untagged images, so I've been looking around to see what others are doing. Thanks! ~MDD4696 22:15, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
I haven't been doing much tagging, actually. I've got a bot that does three things: it removes any image with no source or copyright information from articles, it notifies users if they haven't been notified, and it adds a datestamp to any nosource or no-copyright tag without one, which may be what you're seeing. I've been playing with the idea of creating a script to automatically tag images, but I haven't had time. --Carnildo 23:12, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
