Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, MaxamillionWeatherby, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of your recent edits to the page Brandon Hein did not conform to Wikipedia's verifiability policy, and may have been removed. Wikipedia articles should refer only to facts and interpretations verified in reliable, reputable print or online sources or in other reliable media. Always provide a reliable source for quotations and for any material that is likely to be challenged, or it may be removed. Wikipedia also has a related policy against including original research in articles.

If you are stuck and looking for help, please see the guide for citing sources or come to The Teahouse, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Again, welcome!  Tacyarg (talk) 15:48, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Everything I added is factual and directly from Brandon Hein. How do I cite private information about his current status that is not published MaxamillionWeatherby (talk) 16:20, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid if it's not published, it can't be added. Please see Wikipedia:Reliable sources for what's required. Also, you haven't addressed why you are removing large portions of content along with your additions. signed, Willondon (talk) 16:26, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is old information that is not accurate and states they are still in prison. None of them are in prison. Brandon had his sentence vacated in 2020. This Wikipedia article is hurting his life and career. Since no newspaper articles were written about his life over the last four years, he just has to have inaccurate information published about him? MaxamillionWeatherby (talk) 16:31, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I notice the article is poorly sourced in parts. What you need to do is explain your edit, and how it's supported by Wikipedia's policies, etc. For instance, this edit [1] could be done with the edit summary "unsourced", because no sources have been given. Some statements are sourced to "Appeal from the judgment of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County" (currently [3] in the reference list). I remember reading somewhere that court documents should not be relied upon for some things, but I can't locate it right now. As you go further on in the article, content starts to be sourced from reputable newspapers, which will be harder to remove without being challenged. Going forward, I would evaluate the sourcing for statements you want to remove, and remove them in a series of smaller edits; this will help prevent others throwing out the good with the bad if they want to challenge an edit. In the case that one of your edits does get challenged, the place to go directly is the talk page at Talk:Brandon Hein. One thing you won't succeed in, is adding content that is not published in a reliable source. Personal testimony is not useful at Wikipedia. Feel free to ask for more guidance if you like. Thanks. signed, Willondon (talk) 17:26, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi MaxamillionWeatherby, your wording suggests you have a conflict of interest about this article - that is, you are, know, work for or represent Hein. I will post the guidance about that below. Best wishes, Tacyarg (talk) 18:11, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do not know him personally. I like thousands of others have closely followed his case for the last 29 years. 2603:6011:1900:5E:AD4B:B3E7:3F8F:65D9 (talk) 18:22, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your information. This is obviously going to take a lot of time and effort. It’s unfortunate that someone such as Brandon who is a private civilian has a Wikipedia page filled with incorrect information and no way to cite updated information. It states he’s in prison in CA but has been living in another state as a free person with a vacated sentence for four years. 2603:6011:1900:5E:AD4B:B3E7:3F8F:65D9 (talk) 18:19, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again, please remember to log in. You said Everything I added is factual and directly from Brandon Hein. How do I cite private information about his current status. How have you got that information if you neither know him or work for him?
It might be useful for you to ask for help at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard. Tacyarg (talk) 18:28, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have seen his and his supporters Instagram, Facebook pages and his web site and there are support pages for him on these pages. There’s photographs and videos of him with his wife and daughter. There’s photos of him being released. He is a professional artist. He does public speaking.I’ve watched the videos. I am simply an advocate for justice and seeing that he spent 25 years in prison and then had the sentence vacated by a CA Judge, I don’t think his life should be damaged by a Wikipedia page with a lot on false information. 2603:6011:1900:5E:AD4B:B3E7:3F8F:65D9 (talk) 18:41, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It might be easier than you think. See here at Murderpedia [https://murderpedia.org/male.H/h/hein-brandon.htm]. (I had to "nowiki" the link because it's apparently blacklisted here.) It looks like at least the first half of the article has been lifted verbatim. Wikipedia cannot allow copyright infringement, so it must be deleted. This is something an administrator has to do. I'll try to spend some time in the next couple hours to deal with it. There are procedures for identifying the edits that need reversed and "scrubbed from the record", and it's more difficult because those edits were not made recently. Cheers. signed, Willondon (talk) 19:04, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are awesome!! Thank you! I am a justice advocate but not very tech savvy. That makes a lot of sense. I’ve wondered how much false information was ever put on Wikipedia. Today I tried to help but clearly was a bit over my head. I’m glad there are people like you! 2603:6011:1900:5E:9068:9578:E09A:F2CC (talk) 19:17, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for explaining what looked like conflict of interest. I will remove the note about it below. Tacyarg (talk) 19:19, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. 2603:6011:1900:5E:9068:9578:E09A:F2CC (talk) 19:22, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, not so simple. The Murderpedia content was originally copied from *drum roll* Wikipedia, so it's not copyright infringement (from there, anyway). It remains woefully unsourced, so I've tagged the article because of that. Going forward, tedious though it is, it might be better to use the article talk page to discuss individually portions to be removed or edited. There, you can outline specifically which parts are inaccurate, or should be countered with updated information. We're happy to help incorporate your input in a way that doesn't go against Wikipedia's policies, etc. I asked a question at the WP:TEAHOUSE and mentioned your name, so you should get a notice and a link, if you'd like to read that exchange. signed, Willondon (talk) 21:37, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Editing the Murder of Jimmy Farris article

[edit]

I've added the {{In use}} template to the article to discourage others from editing until you're done. You should be aware of how the edits leave the article looking. It's current status is: Title:Murder of Jimmy Farris, First line: On September 25, 2020, Brandon Hein’s murder sentence was vacated. This, of course, is an awful structure for an article, and makes little sense. The "in use" tag should buy you some time, but I warn that each edit that leaves the article in poor shape is a vulnerable attraction for a challenger to just revert all the edits back to what we call a "stable version". signed, Willondon (talk) 18:46, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Okay thank you. Someone changed the name from Brandon Hein to Murder of Jimmy Farris but it’s all linked to Brandon Hein and his information and pictures. Brandon didn’t murder him and his sentence was vacated. This is so complicated. I’ll just remove the part about his sentence being vacated for now because I don’t know how to do it properly. MaxamillionWeatherby (talk) 19:20, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm not sure how the article came to be renamed, but it does change the whole focus of what the topic is. Regrettably, the article was so horribly sourced from the beginning. To my mind, the notable things that support the article being there at all are the reactions to an excessive sentence, especially based on the felony laws treating as guilty of murder people that had no part in it. Anyway, I'll let you carry on. Convention is that other's can remove the "in use" tag if they see that the last edit is over two hours ago. I hope to have more time tomorrow to have a look at the article. signed, Willondon (talk) 19:38, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Someone else changed the name and I’m not sure why. It’s unfortunate because Jimmy’s parents are elderly and have expressed publicly they don’t want things like this on the Internet. I wish the whole thing could be discarded and if someone wants to talk about SB-1437 and felony murder law, create a page about it. There are thousands of other cases and hundreds of people who have had their sentences vacated. It’s unfair and unfortunate that this current page is done in a way that it is all focused on Brandon Hein who has his sentence vacated and wasn’t the killer. I am not going to make any more edits for now. Do I need to do anything else or just leave it be as far as the in use tag? MaxamillionWeatherby (talk) 20:10, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll remove the "in use" tag. The page has fewer than 30 watchers, so it shouldn't see a lot of activity. Another user renamed the page (called "moving" the article here) [2], citing WP:BOLDMOVE (meaning it wasn't the result of discussion), and WP:BIO1E and WP:BLP1E, which provide guidance for dealing with persons known only for one event, and recommends that the topic of the article be the event, not the people (which is why Brandon Hein wasn't a suitable title). Sorry you're learning way more about Wikipedia's workings than you probably ever wanted. Cheers. signed, Willondon (talk) 20:29, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
