THE ARCHAIC Fortification OF Thebes

[edit]

The Archaic fortification of Thebes

“Seven Gated Thebes”

The construction and fortification of Thebes during the Archaic period was located near the acropolis called the kadmeia. Debate among scholars over the exact date of the construction of walls has been on going, but a general consensus has been that it was some time during the late 6th century or early 5th century BC. The walls were designed with regularity concerning the size of the stones. According to Faraklas in Thebaika, the Archaic walls were replaced during the Hellenistic period. This would affect the material evidence archaeologist have when investigating.

The implication of such a wall tell us that Thebes was a popular city. An estimated ten thousand people lived there during the Late Archaic period. It also tells us that Thebes feared for its safety against warring neighbors such as Athens and Persia. Within the walls, sanctuaries and temples to Apollo Ismenios exist, which housed expensive votive offerings such as Croesus’ dedication of a golden shield.

Matthew McDaniel/sandbox moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Matthew McDaniel/sandbox, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please follow the confirms on the Articles for Creation template atop the page. –Ammarpad (talk) 04:31, 1 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi - I wanted to weigh in as well. I agree with Ammarpad, the article definitely needs more in-depth and independent reliable sources to help establish notability. The article also needs work on its tone, as it's not written in a style that is appropriate for Wikipedia. While the style is entertaining, it's not what Wikipedia goes for - your fellow students left notes on this on the draft's talk page. I would also remove the image of the boat, as it just doesn't make any true sense to be there. Seeing it there is a little confusing and even draws away from the text, as it makes the reader question why there's a boat there rather than complementing the article. I was also unable to really tell what the article is supposed to be about, unfortunately. I'm sorry, but this will need more work before it's ready.
