User talk:Mary K McIntyre
Not quite sure why you must wait on a review process, but it's possible that my new page on Mary Anne Barkhouse went straight online because I have a history of (sporadically) contributing to existing articles over a period of years. Try contributing to existing articles (many of which, like the Barkhouse page, need a lot of work) and build up a reputation as a reliable contributor.

[edit]Hi Mary K. Thanks for creating the very interesting page about Lois Betteridge. I made a few cosmetic edits to the article, but it's well done. If you're interested I have a few tips for making the reference section a bit tighter. Cheers! Magnolia677 (talk) 16:44, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
Hi again
[edit]Thanks for your message on my talk page.
Feel free to delete this message when you're done, as it's kinda long. Also, read the message on this page, and not in edit mode (where I added some weird formatting to make it look this way).
Ok...you've used the "cite" style for your references, which is the best way. The only problem I see is that every time you use the same source (eg. Betteridge's "An Autobiography"), you add another full citation for it, which makes the reference list really long and hard to work with.
I'll show you a trick so you only need to enter the same reference once. Take a peek (in edit mode) at how I used it for the book "Delta Plantations: The Beginning", at Princeton, Mississippi.
The first time I referenced the book, I used this entry...
<ref name="Woods">{{cite book | last = Woods | first = Woody | title = Delta Plantations: The Beginning | publisher = Troy (Woody) Woods | year = 2010 | url = http://books.google.ca/books?id=5kCn5zzFIjkC&lpg=PP1&pg=PP1#v=onepage&q=prince&f=false}}</ref>
Notice how I added "ref name="Woods" at the start?
After that, each time I need to reference this book, I just add <ref name="Woods"/>. In non-edit mode you can see how it adds the same number each time this source is used, and in the reference list it adds "a, b, c" after each use.
The problem is, this won't work for any of the sources you've used, such as Betteridge's "An Autobiography". This is because you've added different page numbers to each reference, so you're really not citing the "exact" same source.
An easy workaround is to just take the page numbers out of the reference, then tack them on at the end...
<ref name="Betteridge">{{cite journal | last = Betteridge | first = Lois | title = An Autobiography | journal = Goldsmiths Journal | year = 1978 | volume = IV | issue = 2}} Print.</ref>{{rp|23}}
"Rp" means "reference page".
After that, every time you need to reference this source, just add...
<ref name="Betteridge"/>{{rp|96}} (or whatever page number).
I hope this helps. Magnolia677 (talk) 19:18, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
Photos
[edit]Hi again. I took a look at "Essence, 2007, by Lois Betteridge. Sterling silver, raised, chased and repoussed.jpg" and it was resized and then uploaded at 326 pixels. Photos for which you don't have the copyright can't be big though, since you're only permitted to show a small picture when using "fair-use". Also, the name of the photographer shouldn't be shown in the article. I'll fix it. Magnolia677 (talk) 20:07, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
- I got your message about photo size. Also, I see one of your photos has been flagged because of copyright. If you follow the links below, find out about the copyright status of the photos. Typically, unless the photos are your own, or meet very specific criteria, they can't be uploaded. Sometimes if the photos are small and meet "fair-use" criteria, they're ok to upload, but yours may not be. Magnolia677 (talk) 22:49, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
Replaceable fair use File:Lois Betteridge, 2010.jpeg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Lois Betteridge, 2010.jpeg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Peripitus (Talk) 20:09, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
References
[edit]Hi Mary K. I fixed 3 of the references. I didn't do the articles written by Betteridge, as they are not ideal references to use. Generally, self-published sources get tagged and are not encouraged. Cheers! Magnolia677 (talk) 16:57, 28 March 2014 (UTC)
- One more suggestion. A lot of the provinces have been abbreviate (eg. "ON"), which is not great form. What would work better, and be in wiki style (see WP:MOSLINK), would be to spell out in full, and add a wikilink, to each place the first time it appears. So, the first time Guelph appears, add a wikilink to "Guelph, Ontario". For each mention of Guelph after the first, just add "Guelph" without the province or wikilink. Hello, I am working on a pet project to help digitize information about the field of metalsmithing+jewelry. I started with making a page for Art jewelry forum (AJF), and have a list of artists that I would like to make pages for as well. The AJF page has been nominated for deletion because it is questioned if the organization is "notable". I am reaching out to you because I saw that you edited some pages that relate to studio craft, and thought you may have an informed opinion (unlike the mathematician who nominated the page for deletion) about whether or not it is a "notable organization". If you have an opinion, one way or another, please way in on the articles for deletion discussion https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Art_jewelry_forumClarefinin (talk) 21:30, 11 July 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clarefinin (talk • contribs)
