New AfD LoPbN

You supported retention of the LoPbN tree a year ago. At this moment, vote is 8D to 3K on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of people by name (2nd nomination). I assume your views are unchanged, and would appreciate your weighing in again. (I notice the younger Tony hasn't edited in a week, so i'm giving him a lower priority to drop such a note to. Hi Tony - thanks for the kind comments - not sure how talented I am, but I do my best :). You've got a pretty impressive resumé yourself by the looks of it! I must say that, while I am anti-war, I have nothing but admiration for the people who are willing to put their lives on the line for the cause. I also am very impressed by someone who does their bit towards making their country or people's history more widely known to others (hey, let's face it, that's a part of what wikipedia's all about! :).   • Point on brigadier general reviewed. See this reference. It clearly says first Hispanic. I wonder if they meant first Mexican American? George Meade, was born in Spain, but is he of Spanish heritage? The article says his father was a serving in Spain as a naval agent for the U.S. government. However, Luis R. One of the links you provided and this one [1] say that he left the regular Army at the rank of Major. Perhaps he achieved general officer in the National Guard. I have not yet found any reference to rank in the Army past major. There is reference to Adjutant General in the National Guard. Nunez-Juarez

Tony, I looked at the reference for burial site for PFC Nunez Juarez. It only lists his name, etc. This POW/MIA site still lists him as MIA. Is it possible that his body was not recovered, and the "burial" is a memorial, without remains? — ERcheck (talk) 13:06, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Category comment

I noticed that you added Category:Puerto Rican soldiers to the Rafel Toro article. Toro was a Marine. I notice that the category has been used for USMC and U.S. Navy personnel — which doesn't feel right.

There was a long discussion in the Military history WikiProject on categories and categorization of people. The parent category for by nation is Category:Military personnel by nation. The naming convention would be Puerto Rican military personnel, with possible subcategories, such as Puerto Rican soldiers, etc. This category is intended to be "by nation", not "nationality", if I recall the discussion. (I might be wrong here.)

Chiry Vassallo

I noticed that you wrote the original bio on Mr. Vassallo which mentions he was born in 1920, which would place him at 86-87 years of age at time of death this week. I was watching the Channel 10 broadcast of Senate proceedings Monday night and, after Senator De Castro gave a speech memorializing Mr. Vassallo and mentioning that no one would have thought he was 86, as El Nuevo Día reported, before other senators were allowed to speak, the Senate President suggested that no further reference to his age be made during the session since there were conflicting press reports that morning that put his age as 86 (El Nuevo Día) and 64 (The San Juan Star).   • The article stated "(c. 1920)" which means "circa 1920" or "around 1920" (somebody removed it, but I replaced it back). This was estimated in accordance to an interview realized by Mr. Vassallo three years ago in "EL Nuevo Dia". This seems to be the correct version since some members of his family in the past have contributed with some editing of the article and made no changes to the respect. Hi Tony - I was wondering - I have an overzealous editor who seems to have taken an issue with a photograph I took at a fashion show a few years back (I'm not a photographer) and then flagged a bunch of unrelated images (of Anna Wintour, Andre Leon Talley, Sequins, etc.) as well. The editor didn't create any Talk pages for the deletions, and made no attempt to contact me or raise the issues on the talk pages, but then reported it as a RfC. Can you please weigh in with your thoughts? Overzealous editing is a problem on here. You know from my additions I'm not self-promoting and I have added quite a bit of value on Wikipedia. Well, now the battle rages on over my photo on Sexual objectification - I put a photo from Tara Subkoff's 2002 Fall Imitation of Christ fashion show. One of the vignettes showed models cordoned off by velvet ropes in heels and panties vacuuming. I thought this was a great addition as it demonstrates women's sexual objectification being used at, of all things, a fashion show. Two editors are seemingly against any photos on this page. There are four editors in favor, three against (and one anonymous user).

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, Tony. I am sorry you are hurting. I have been fortunate to never have suffered much personal loss in terms of family deaths, so I can only imagine what you are going through. Tony need your input

I submitted a photo to sexual objectification of women in panties heels and nothing else vacuuming; it's of a fashion show by Imitation of Christ, a well-known label. Several editors want NO images on the page, but I think this one is pretty clear: at a fashion show, these topless models vacuuming in heels shows women objectified sexually. Thanks Tony. I didn't mind if it got voted up or down, I just thought it was appropriate. There are about three editors on there who have formed a cabal of ownership, they are very long-winded and supercilious. They tried to say there were minors in the photo, that there was copyright violation, consents needed, that it didn't work, that it was POV, that it was low-quality, that it was a parody of sexual objectification (which wouldn't make any difference - it still illustrates the concept regardless), etc. It was very nasty, though, and Atomaton kept editing my RfC and my own Talk page comments. I lost my temper somewhat and was slapped with a 3RR violation - my fault. I waited awhile to see if they would continue to discuss it, but once I left no discussion took place. So I asked for a RfC, which Atomaton seems to have quite a bit of problem with - he wants the discussion closed. I think it's a good open use photo we have in our possession, although more of them are found on the Commons. Thanks for the input.   • Thanks for the welcome. I am very interested in helping in the Wikipedia Puerto Rico project. It definately needs more articles. I am planning to concentrate in the literature area. I just added the Olga Nolla one and changed the Rosario Ferré to include her works (also planning to change the template. In the meantime, I added myself to the lsit of participants in the PR Wikipedia Project. I also submitted the Olga Nolla article for peer review (I just hope it was in the right place) as well as for a Featured article (again, I hope it was in the right place). Rivera Update

I found an image of Rivera from '85, but apparently there's been a massive crackdown on almost all NFL-related images. It has come down to the point where one can not even use Sports Illustrated covers in player article's with the regular magazine cover license. I'm still looking on Flickr for some images, but Rivera images are hard to find. I'll keep looking though.

Your friend is at it again, imposing his very personal philosophy regarding who should not appear on the List of prominent Puerto Ricans. Months ago he removed two of Puerto Rico's most well-known and revered graphic artists---Luis Hernández Cruz and Augusto Marín---and now he removes two of the most influential Puerto Ricans in New York politics today---NY State Hispanic Caucus chairman Peter Rivera and Roberto Ramírez, Al Sharpton's campaign manager and cellmate when arreested in Vieques, former legislator, DNC member and probably the most influential political operative. But his most egregious deletion is that of doña Kate. While not born in Puerto Rico, anyone who has lived 50 years in Puerto Rico, held the position of First Lady of Puerto Rico and made a mark in Puerto Rico on her own, as one of three Trustees of the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust (they own and operate Las Cabezas de San Juan in Foajardo, Hacienda Vives in Ponce, much of the conservation area in Vieques, etc), author of the best-selling Cocinando en La Fortaleza cookbook and founder of the foundation that funds kids whose parent died in the line of fire as policemen (which she began as First Lady and has continued over 20 yrs after leaving the Governor's Mansion) merits to be on the list, perhaps more so than other First Ladies (they should all be in the list, by the way) who left less of a mark than doña Kate, while serving as such, or in their own right after leaving La Fortaleza. There's no way that your friend can accept other opinions on who should be on the PR list, as you may see in these excerpts from his page: List of famous Puerto Ricans

Man, I know what you mean. Some of these people editing can be a pain in el "culo". Anyway, who exactly is the editor deleting the names? Here is a solution, add something like this to the introducing paragraph "This is a list of people who were either born in Puerto Rico, are descendents of Puerto Ricans or have chosen Puerto Rico as their homeland." By doing so, it is clear that there will be non-Puerto Ricans in the list that have contributed and dedicated themselves to the island and therefore, considered by many of us as "Puerto Ricans". This way the person deleting the names will not be justified in doing so. I'm always on the look-out when it comes to the miliatry and science sections. In one case I noticed that someone deleted Adam Clayton Powell IV's name and I fixed it. Tell me what you think. Tony the Marine 18:52, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

I agree with you 100%. Sometimes due to an Ango surname, editors might be mistaken that they are nopt Puerto Rican. However, some such as Kate Donnelly should not be included in the list unless that person has spent considerable amount of their life in Puerto Rico. She is reviled by many on the island as being a reason that her husband has become so anti-nationalist and also blame her for encouraging him to cover up the Cerro Maravilla scandal. --XLR8TION 19:59, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Very few people "revile" doña Kate, and even if you believe that is so, an opinion which I respect, that is no reason to remove her, just as one would not remove criminals, outlaws, terrorists or defeated politicians. I have never heard absolutely anyone "blame her for encouraging him to cover up the Cerro Maravilla scandal" or "being a reason that her husband has become so anti-nationalist". Don't be an apologist for Romero Barceló. Whatever he did and whatever he believes in, nobody should be blamed but himself! You specifically removed former first ladies who are no longer active. That is contrary to the definition/introduction to the List, which states: "Neither is the list viewed from the context of the present. Their fame could be brief, what matters is that they were well-known during the peak of their popularity." First Ladies were all certainly well-known during the peak of their popularity. Doña Kate must be close to 70 and has lived in Puerto Rico for over 40 years---more than 80% of her adult life, which certainly covers the "residency" requirement to be on the list. She's remained active, raising funds for the children of dead policemen and served as trustee for the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust. What list would you put her in but this one? Every First Lady should be on the list, alive, dead, active or inactive. [comment left by 200.50.30.205 ]

First, Please sign your comments. Second, marriage to a politician does not make one famous. Only First Ladies who have labored for social issues should be recognized. There are many wives of politicians who have really never done anything and remained in the shadows of their husbands. If only "First Ladies who have labored for social issues should be recognized", when will you start deleting names from the "First Lady of the United States From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia" page which "incorrectly" lists them all? ...or should I eliminate Mamie Eisenhower and a few other less notable First Ladies and justify my edits by citing your parameter? The fact is that while all First Ladies, almost without exception initially became notable because they were married to their husbands, they did become notable figures in their time and, additionally, many took up notable projects, while "in office" and after they ceased to be First Ladies. In doña Kate's case, not only did she develop many worthwhile "social issues" (as you call them, although who are you or me to judge them!) but has continued doing so long after moving out of La Fortaleza. For over 22 years since she left the Governor's Mansion, she raises and pays out funds to the children of slain policemen so they can complete their studies. Is that not a worthwhile "social issue"? Additionally, she has served as one of three Trustees, appointed by the US Secretary of the Interior, of the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust, the quasi-public entity that has done the most for environmental conservation and historic preservation. Not more than 20 or 25 people have ever held the ad honorem yet immensely prestigious position of Trustee of the PRCT. [another comment left by 200.50.30.201]

I wish I went to Yankee Stadium for a game when I was living in NYC. If I had known that a new stadium was being built I would've made it a priority. Also, I see on your userpage that you were accepted to Columbia but decided to go to the Marines instead. I wish I had that conviction. I did the opposite. Section

Doesn't this section comprise WP:Original research? If the article is about German immigration to Puerto Rico, shouldn't there be a list of Puerto Ricans of German descent? Such a list would be much more relevant and would pass WP:V, while a list of Puerto Ricans with a German last name doesn't necessarily have anything to with the topic, is arbitrary, and is definitely original research because what makes a German last name anyway? Hey again, I've put a map to the provinces of mozambique at the bottom of the Mozambican War of Independence article, with a link to it in the main body of the text itself at the first mention of a provinces name, that way when the reader first reads the name of a province, he or she can click on the link and be transported down to see where it is, and when reading on he or she will always know its there so they can look again when they next come across a province name. But do you mind taking a look and seeing if it looks okay there? You may be able to tweak it into a neater fashion with your greater wiki-know-how :) SGGH 22:48, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Fuzzy Zoeller edit controversy

Hello, there. As you may or may not know, the Miami Herald recently revealed that professional golfer Fuzzy Zoeller has filed a lawsuit against Josef Silny & Associates, Inc. for adding false statements to his Wikipedia biography.

For data gathering purposes, an SRS of 20 administrators has been created, you being one of them. I would like you to comment on this situation and its possible implications to Wikipedia, the accused company, and the general welfare of the community in general. Mozambican War of Independence

Hi there! I'm sorry it has taken me a couple of days to get back to you and return the nice message you left on my talk page. Life has been absolutely chaotic for me this week, with so much happening that I don't know whether I'm on my head or my heels, and have had hardly any time to get on wikipedia at all! But at last I'm able to squeeze in a few minutes for my favourite hobby. Yes, I think the Mozambican War of Independence article is an excellent candidate for FA status and would strongly encourage you to go ahead with the nomination. It's one of the best articles I've seen.

Thanks for the changed to Dyke's article, one oppose to Mozambique article so far regarding images copyright, have fixed one of the 4 images he listed, unsure what to do with the other 3, I can replace the infobox one if necessary with something else that synbolises the conflict, but the two generals one are hard to replace and important to keep I feel. 1984 Olympic games

Hi Tony, I'm writing about a recent change you made to the page of Aristides Gonzales. He won the bronze in 1984 for the Middleweight class in boxing and did so carrying the Puerto Rican flag.

Gonzo and the bronze medal

Hi again Toni, Thanks for your input. I'm new to the wiki thing, but I know about Gonzo. We were room mates in Italy serving in the Army with the 509th Airborne. Because of your interest in noting Puerto Rican history and their contributions to the world, I'd like to pass on the following info as well.

Gonzo was the first Puerto Rican to win an olympic medal under the Puerto Rican flag. He wasn't the first Puerto Rican to win a medal, that was Juan Evangelista Venegas who also won a bronze for boxing in the 1948 olympics, though representing the United States. He was certainly also representing Puerto Rico, but the credit was chalked up to the U.S.

Gonzo was the first Puerto Rican I had a chance to know, and he was an extreme amount of drive and self motivation, and also knew how to enjoy himself. I wish I had the chance to get back in touch with him, but there are so many people with that name that it makes it really difficult.

Again, I'm no wiki expert, I'm just speaking from what I know. If one were interested enough, I'm sure you could find referenced sources such as video of the medal ceremony and other internet sites that could verify it, but I have precious little time for that.

Puerto Rico Democratic Party and Republican Party

May I suggest the creation of a page on Puerto Rico's national parties. While they don't field candidates for office in Puerto Rico, they play an important role in the presidential nominating process, in the selection of Federal judges and US attorneys and in other fdederal actions that affect Puerto Rico. The fact that Puerto Rico's current Resident Commissioner and Senate President consider it important to retain their respective titles as Republican and Democratic national committeemen is demonstrative of the importance they attach to the role that national parties play in Puerto Rico. A few notes that may help:

After politically bloody and divisive primaries between pro-statehood and pro-commonwealth Democrats in 1988 and 1992, both factions agree to share subsequent convention delegations on a 50-50% basis. 1996 and 2000 negotiations were carried out between Eudaldo Báez Galib and Kenneth McClintock, and the 2004 deal between Roberto Prats and McClintock. While pro-commonwealthers control the party structure, the pro-statehood faction controls the women and young Democrat structures and McClintock serves as National Committeeman. A pro-statehood Democrat, Francisco Domenech, serves as national vice president of YDA-Young Demoicrats of America, and a pro-Commonwealther, Eliseo Roques serves as an additional DNC member, appointed by DNC Chairman Howard Dean.

My thoughts on images in infoboxes

Tony, My opinion for what it is worth. With respect to adding images of Medals to infoboxes — since the Medal of Honor is the highest military honor, in order to distinguish its recepients, I added it to the infoboxes. However, I'm not a fan of putting other medals in the infobox, as I think it takes away from the uniqueness. — ERcheck (talk) 05:41, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Likewise on listing awards in the infobox — the Military history project describes that entry as "significant" awards. For USMC personnel, we've settled on adding in order of precedence, down to the Purple Heart. An exception might be for the POW medal if that is what they are noted for.
