MICHAEL A. AMOS[edit]

}}

Hello. My name is Michael A. Amos. I have a lot of family on here, so I tried to clean up some family tree things on pages "Charles Amos" (my great uncle), "Egerton Marcus" (my father's younger brother), and "Troy Amos-Ross" (my second cousin, my father and uncle Egerton's first cousin), etc. I am also trying to create my page to tie it altogether because none of my family maintains the accuracy of these pages and it drives me insane. I'm just having trouble with creating the sources for my page. Please help with this. Thanks.

Michael A. Amos

You really shouldn't be editing pages on you or people you know, see WP:COI. Datbubblegumdoetalkcontribs 03:11, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings Wikipedia Editorial team, First and foremost I am very new to this so please understand I do not mean any harm. I am only trying to ensure accuracy to my family pages and my proposed page. I've literally only been on this since today 5:00pm ish I just figured out this four siggly line thing. Mamos1983 (talk) 03:23, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I actually like the format that was redid to the page. It's obviously a lot cleaner than I could make it. With respect to "You shouldn't edit people you know," how else would that level of accuracy be achieved on my family's pages? They are already up and verified by persons like yourselves, their just not accurate in terms of family ties...Like how would a random stranger know that Charles Amos is my great uncle on my father's side (my father's uncle/grandmother's brother)? Or is the first person in my family of 3 olympians...or that Egerton Marcus is the first cousin of my second Cousin (Grandmother's brother's kid) Troy Amos-Ross? I'm not trying be difficult, but if it was your family legacy on here you would be reading it with my eyes saying, "Why is that all wrong? Who wrote this?" People write pages on here with what limited info they have. I'm merely trying to ensure accuracy. If you check the Charles Amos newly created page (I have sourced that) as well as edited/linked them to Troy Amos-Ross, Egerton Marcus now with accuracy. That's my case for that. As for myself, I mean you can simply just google me or go to IMDB.com Thanks for your help thus far. Also, its saying American Actor? Definitely Toronto Born and Raised Mamos1983 (talk) 03:32, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well... the thing is, unless the family member is notable enough to have an article on Wikipedia, there's really no reason to list extended family members on Wikipedia. If one of these people was your father then that'd be one thing, but these are extended family members. It's generally assumed that any given person will have extended family members and Wikipedia is not meant to be a family tree ala Ancestry.com. All articles must assert notability, especially as notability is WP:NOTINHERITED. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 05:32, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Also, you need to be aware that this can be seen as self-promotion, since you've been very keen on ensuring that you're mentioned in various articles. In other words, you're interested in editing about your family as a way of inserting yourself into Wikipedia. This might not be the main reason you're editing, but this is strongly how it can come across to others, including myself. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 05:38, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not angry at all! (LOL) I'm a very public figure in my city. The last thing I need is a screen shot of this stating I'm angry. Merely cleaning things up. But go ahead and do what you have to do. Also, on the "Charles Amos" page I sourced for my great uncle the actual link of his involvement in the 1968 Olympics. It was a nightmare to find online since his generation is so old and pre-online basically. Take care:) Mamos1983 (talk) 15:30, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Again, I am new. I haven't created the page for my father yet, but his name is Christopher D. Amos. "Troy Amos-Ross" and "Egerton Marcus" both turned into Stunt actors. It will take you all about 10 seconds to verify that via IMDB.COM. What's not explained is that my father, "Egerton's" older brother, and "Troy Amos-Ross" first cousin was the first stunt man in our family that bridged their boxing careers over to stunt acting." So are you telling me to edit those aspects about them, which undoubtedly will be verified via online resources by your team, and then neglect the fact that I'm his son as well? I don't intend for this to be self promotion at all, I'm merely trying to ensure truth. Those guys in my family come from a generation of they don't really care what's online about the family, I'm just taking measures to ensure its true backed by online sources like all the other wikipedia pages. Being a family member who's proactive to preserve the accuracy and integrity of my families last name in this very public domain doesn't detract from it being truth, which is what I believe Wikipedia is all about being a "editable" online Encyclopedia. No? Mamos1983 (talk) 09:28, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think it would be wise if you were to hold off on adding information about your family to Wikipedia's mainspace for the time being. The problem here is that while these people undoubtedly exist, you need to show how they would be notable per Wikipedia's guidelines. Existing as a performer or an athlete does not give notability in and of themselves - you have to show where they pass WP:NACTOR or WP:ATHLETE. For example, in the article you wrote about yourself you mention that you performed in films, however these roles were minor and would not give notability even though the film itself is notable. Notability giving roles are ones where you would have a sizable speaking role, would be one of the major characters, and/or would be mentioned in reviews of the film. You also mention your book, however the book has received no critical notice outside of a Toronto Heritage award, which isn't the type of award that would be considered a major enough one to keep on that basis alone. I looked at your father's IMDb page and neither of the roles he had would be major enough to warrant a keep on that basis either.
Basically, verifiability isn't entirely the issue here. Yes, we need to be able to verify them, but we also need to be able to prove that they're notable. I know that this must be difficult to hear, but from what I can see neither you nor your father currently pass notability guidelines to where either of you would warrant mention on Wikipedia. This is why it's so highly discouraged for people to edit about people and things that they're directly involved or related with - in many cases the people won't pass notability guidelines and it's hard to hear someone say that you're not notable. People aren't questioning that you or your father aren't related to notable people, just whether or not either of you are notable enough to warrant inclusion in any format on Wikipedia. So far the answer is that no. I hate being so blunt with this since I know that this will just make you angry, but this is per Wikipedia's guidelines, which are incredibly strict. I've had to delete pages on people who have published books that sold exceptionally well, yet they never gained the coverage necessary to warrant an article.
Again, Wikipedia is not a place to keep track of your family history or raise awareness that you and your father are related to notable persons. I understand your frustration, but right now it's really not a good idea for you to continue adding pages on your family to Wikipedia. I'd more recommend going through someplace like Wikia, where you have more freedom in what you can include. You can try creating articles via WP:AfC, however I need to stress that you will have to show where their accomplishments would be considered major per Wikipedia's guidelines. Simply being related to someone notable is not enough and you have to show notability via coverage in independent and reliable sources. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 09:44, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Mamos1983. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. People with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, see the conflict of interest guideline and frequently asked questions for organizations. In particular, please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, its competitors, or projects and products you or they are involved with;
  • instead, propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

Last but not least: All contributors must not contribute content that violates conflict of interest laws (just as all contributors must respect copyright). The Unfair Commercial Practices Directive is valid throughout the European Union. In a German court decision in 2012 (that also relied on the directive) regarding Wikipedia: "The court held that when a company edits a Wikipedia article, the resulting text falsely creates the impression that the edit has no business-related purpose. By implication, the judges found that the average reader of Wikipedia articles expects to find objective and neutral information." That is a very very important condition, comparable to the FTC Guide" that consumers are likely to believe reflects the opinions, beliefs, findings, or experience of a party other than the sponsoring advertiser”. This expectation by consumers of neutral information on Wikipedia, requires that companies not write "their" WP articles for PR/marketing purposes.

Editors who are compensated for their contributions should make the disclosure by placing the {{connected contributor (paid)}} template at the top of the talk page of affected articles and filling in the parameters. They should also supply this information as part of a list on their user page of all their paid contributions.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing, and autobiographies. Thank you. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 05:33, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

October 2015[edit]

Information icon Please do not write or add to an article about yourself. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged – see our guideline on writing autobiographies. If you create such an article, it may be deleted. If what you have done in life is genuinely notable and can be verified according to our policy for articles about living people, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later (see Wikipedians with articles). If you wish to add to an existing article about yourself, please propose the changes on its talk page. Please understand that this is an encyclopedia and not a personal web space or social networking site. If your article has already been deleted, please see: Why was my page deleted?, and if you feel the deletion was an error, please discuss it with the deleting administrator. Thank you.
