Don't worry too much about breaking rules - two of our cardinal principles (although much abused) are to Be bold and Ignore all rules. It would be worth following some of the links in the welcome message, though, just so you aren't surprised at others' reactions to your contributions (particularly the Wikipedia:Five pillars, which links to WP:NOT, WP:NPOV, WP:EQ, and WP:V).
