Control copyright icon Hello M G Brown! While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 04:23, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Pinball News

[edit]

Hello M G Brown,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Pinball News for deletion, because it seems to be promotional, rather than an encyclopedia article.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, M G Brown. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Seraphimblade Talk to me 21:54, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, M G Brown,

I need to delete this page as it is an orphaned talk page. But I suggest you discuss this article's deletion with the administrator who deleted it. You can find this information at the top of Pinball News.

If you have questions about editing on Wikipedia or its policies and practices, please bring them to the Teahouse where more experienced editors can offer you advice and support. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 22:27, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Steven R. Epstein requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.pinballnews.com/site/2020/06/19/steve-epstein-dies/ and https://www.nytimes.com/1985/05/22/nyregion/about-new-york-the-pinball-capital-of-the-world-cries-tilt.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Alansohn (talk) 20:50, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You just recreated the article for Steven R. Epstein with the same copyright violations that led the previous version to be deleted. Please read the message above and please review copyright policy on Wikipedia so that your article is written entirely in your own words. Alansohn (talk) 00:52, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

So you are basically telling me that I cannot use material from the article that I created and that I have premission from my editor to use here? — Preceding unsigned comment added by M G Brown (talkcontribs) 01:45, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I offer you the following comments, in the hope that some or all of them may be helpful to you.
  1. Please read the part of the copyright notice above beginning "If the external website or image belongs to you..." We can't accept the unsubstantiated statement of a Wikipedia editor that they own copyright, for the simple reason that thousands of people come to edit Wikipedia and lie about who they are. Of course that doesn't mean that you are lying, but it explains why Wikipedia's policy on this is as it is.
  2. You are perfectly free to follow the prescribed process to release copyright if you wish to. However, my advice is that doing so would, unfortunately, merely add to the sense of frustration which I guess you may be feeling about your experience of trying to publish the article so far. That is because even if the copyright issue is resolved, the article is unlikely to last long in the form in which you created it, because it is written more in the style of a personal essay or a piece of magazine journalism than in the more formal, detached style which Wikipedia aims for, and, more importantly, because in places it unambiguously expresses opinions or judgements, rather than being than being written from a neutral point of view. Obviously, that problem can be dealt with by rewriting the material in different words, but then the copyright issue will be irrelevant.
  3. You appear to have had this account for a fairly long time, but you have done only a fairly small amount of editing with it, so in terms of amount of experience you are a fairly new editor. My advice to new editors is that it is best to start by making small improvements to existing articles, rather than creating new articles. That way any mistakes you make will be small ones, and you won't have the discouraging experience of repeatedly seeing hours of work deleted. Gradually, you will get to learn how Wikipedia works, and after a while you will know enough about what is acceptable to be able to write whole new articles without fear that they will be deleted. Over the years I have found that editors who start by making small changes to existing articles and work up from there have a far better chance of having a successful time here than those who jump right into creating new articles from the start. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Lyman F. Sheats Jr., you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Kevin Martin. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 06:00, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
