The Barnstar of Diligence
For your tireless contributions to the WP:XFD processes, I would like to present you with this barnstar. Your efforts are most certainly appreciated. Brad Beattie (talk) 10:05, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. MER-C 10:37, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pick your brains, if I may

Just trying to work this out and hoped you had some idea. Is there any reason you can think of as to why View From Heaven wasn't speedy deleted when I tagged it about ten hours ago? Usually what I do is leave it there even if someone contests it (and leaves the article substantially as it was) and then take it to AfD if it remains. This I do because I presume an admin has agreed with the argument given on the talk page. Or is it because of a backlog? I'm just trying to work out how it works with them. I tagged a few more before this, and they were gone within minutes. I see you are very wise to the ways, so thought I'd gather your opinion. Hope you don't mind. :) Bubba hotep 12:50, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The author removed the speedy tag twice, which he is not allowed to do. Anyone else can remove it. I've !voted speedy delete and replaced the tag half an hour ago. Let's hope the admins are paying attention I've tagged stuff for speedy deletion at 2 pm where I live, without them being deleted before I go to bed (9:30 pm). Just today, I tagged something, only to see it disappear in one minute flat. MER-C 13:05, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it is certainly inconsistent. Still, if there is a backlog, what can you do. Maybe we should all run for admin! Bubba hotep 13:12, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Speaking of which, CAT:SPEEDY is now ove 150 pages. And unsourced/untagged/unlicensed/orphaned fair use/replacable fair use/no rationale is clogged up even further. Sigh. MER-C 13:17, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've just tagged a Brazilian spam article (written in Portuguese) and yet the user still continues to add to the page without even contesting it. Bubba hotep 13:21, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He probably couldn't understand the speedy notice. Then again, who knows what goes on in the minds of n00bs? MER-C 09:03, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can I ask your professional opinion on this one: Ephtée. I tagged it for speedy-spam last night and this morning the tag has mysteriously "disappeared" - well, actually, not a mystery: an anon IP did it. And the notices on the user talk page are gone as well. I still think it's spammy, although it has changed somewhat. I (temporarily) tagged it with "ad" and "primary sources" but am tempted to put the speedy back on. If you're busy, don't worry - and I will try not to make a habit of this! :) Bubba hotep 09:08, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying {{db-corp}}. MER-C 09:12, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good call. I will keep an eye on it. Apart from that, 100% success on the remaining speedy hangers-on from last night for me - now all red-links. ;) Bubba hotep 09:21, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I expanded the article, please remove speedy deletion. Cheers, Knurftendans 09:46, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. Done. MER-C 09:47, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Knurftendans 09:57, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whatever it is, it isn't a neologism. Google hits are quite a lot and they include JSTOR academic citations. The term is also present in several other Wiki articles that I've now linked. --Mereda 18:23, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I got a dumb problem

A user named Squibman reverted (rv) a change i made too the Ares I article. He/she removed the "space shuttle" part of the link that refers to the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster after i had put it back. I really don't want to get into a edit war of the proper link name or title or whatever. Is there anyway i can get a little backup from you? I'm going to try and explain it to him/her, but i don't think it will work.--aceslead 21:14, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd wait for a while. It's too early (GMT and American time). That article hasn't been edited for 11 hours and you're the last editor, so there's a possibility that this could already be resolved.
By the way, it's rvv that's used as a shorthand for reverting vandalism. MER-C 08:33, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Speedying SFDs

It's not a good idea to tag matters already under consideration by one "process" as "speediable" by another; it gives the appearance of 'venue shopping', and carries the risk of the two coming simultaneously to different conclusion. Better just to let it be closed at SFD, speedily or otherwise. Alai 04:44, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Most of my deletion debate experience is from AFD, where the most effective (and probably only) way to get a speedy deletion is to tag the article for speedy deletion. Same goes for MFD. I just assumed that was OK at SFD, but I am now convinced that tagging at SFD isn't necessary. MER-C 08:47, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't have thought it was a great idea in those cases either, though I'm more of an "occasional visitor" to those, so I can't swear to what's the practice there. (Just to be clear, I've no objection to it being tagged for speedying before it's raised at *FD.) Alai 22:18, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, may I interject? My interest in this discussion is twofold – firstly, to gain experience of other areas of Wikipedia. It is vast, I'm sure you will agree. So hearing from you (Alai) about SFD (I had to look it up!) is informative for a start. Secondly, I have come to know MER-C (and, this is niggling me, is it mer-k or mer-see?... anyway...) through our exploits in CSD and AfD, and in 99% of the cases - speedy is the way to go. There are only so many times you can see the spam and vanity pages pile up, if they were all to go to AfD, nobody would ever get any real work done - and that is a fact. We all (three here, and thousands elsewhere) have the best interests of Wikipedia at heart, all have our methods, but I think MER-C has perfected it to a tee. You are both the salt of the Wikipedia earth! Cheers. Bubba hotep 23:13, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Speaking of spam, I'd like some key phrases which I could use to identify userspace spam and Myspace pages on Wikipedia. The current list is here. MER-C 03:28, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

India Havers

Hi there; you have prodded this article. It already had a {{speedy}} tag - perhaps there was an overlap in timing. I have removed your tag, but please feel free to replace it if you feel it's best.--Anthony.bradbury 09:08, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just in case the speedy got contested. I'm watching it. MER-C 09:10, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, could I ask you to review your vote on The Neskimos Article? Arguments for keeping have been added. Thanks!

That particular AfD is attracting a lot of new users. Please don't canvas !votes. I reckon the result will be no consensus though I'll leave it to whoever the closing admin is. MER-C 01:18, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What is the problem? Your summary was dishonest, you reverted an entire page not just one comment.

Check the history, I have a fixed IP and I clean my discussion page up regularly.

List of songs about Melbourne AfD

Hi, your AfD above was linked to a similar AfD 'List of songs about drugs'. I've changed the link to the AfD discussion page but you still need to kick off the discussion with your reasoning and add to today's AfD list. --Steve (Slf67) talk 01:28, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've just created a page for AussieBum . you've added the prodded tag to it.

can you explain what's wrong. this brand is more popular than 2xist which has a page of its own on wikipedia.

I'm planning to expand the article as the brand has a huge following in the gay community but not so much outside of it. --timdew (Talk) 13:27, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's already gone... This was your problem: {{db-corp}}. (I myself felt it was a marginal speedy). Basically what you need to do is assert notability with your first save, then with the next one, add stuff so that it passes WP:CORP. MER-C 13:32, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You can always start the article in a user subpage, then move it to the main space when it's fit to survive the Darwinian onslaught of deletionists. Such userpage drafts are untouchable unless left stale for too long. MER-C 13:35, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, i didn't realise . I was simply doing a first draft as I collected the facts offline . I will do as you suggest. Mind you, I'm wondering how a few of the other underwear brand articles have survived, As they don't have much more information than my first "draft". 2xist being the example I first looked at , to get the first draft underway. Anyway, thank you for the advice, it's much appreciated. -- timdew (Talk) 13:42, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vexels.Net Article Deletion

Hello. Since there are several articles regarding message boards and online art communities in Wikipedia, including DeviantART, I thought it was pretty reasonable to create an article on Vexels.Net as well. Is it the tone of the article, which caused it to be proposed for deletion? Please let me know. Thanks. Xumm1du 14:26, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The question is, does it meet WP:WEB? From what's been said in the deletion debate, the answer is probably no. MER-C 01:22, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My user page

Thanks for reverting at my user page! I appear to have acquired a fanclub by speedy-deleting a reposted article about a forum, and making it stick. I haven't even been paying attention to my watchlist, so I didn't notice until now. — Saxifrage 09:42, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just reckon it was the same guy on a revolving IP. It was quite an edit war. I'd sprotect it since in the time I took to type this message, I reverted again. MER-C 09:49, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It seems like you do a lot of maintenance-type stuff, and the thing on your talk page says "I'M NOT AN ADMIN", so obviously you get mistaken for one. Any particular reason why you're not? I have restored this article which you commented on during the last AFD following a reasonable objection raised by the primary author. However I have relisted it at AFD in an attempt to reach a consensus. You may like to give your opinion. Cheers, Yomanganitalk 11:11, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Essays

Aren't essays (if they reflect upon notable subjects) allowed on Wikipedia? I was not the author, but I was editing it when I noticed you added a delete tag. Diez2 13:12, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An essay, by definition, exists to promote a point of view and would have to be fundamentally rewritten to comply with WP:NPOV. In fact, in the first sentence of our very own article on essays, it says "An essay is a short work of writing that treats a topic from an author's personal point of view." So it's better to get rid of it and start again. MER-C 13:16, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The reason why I changed the Tolkien article was because it claimed he was Irish, which he certainly was not.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.66.194.186 (talkcontribs)

Your last edit truncated the article, see here. Feel free to re-edit as long as you improve the quality. MER-C 13:21, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can see, the edit removed a huge portion of the article as well as de-wikilinking a piped link to the United Kingdom labelled British? That's the way I see it, nothing to do with Irish. Bubba hotep 13:24, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Prod removal explanation

I removed the prod from Battle of Broken Hill-unlikely as it seems, I find quite a bit of information that this did occur, including an ABC documentary transcript. Seraphimblade 07:07, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I live in Australia and I'd never heard of it. Now for the referencing... MER-C 07:11, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Don't see the problem on the original page; I normally use the (snip: is this the preloaded afd?) but somehow (probably my goof) an extra set of [] or {} got attached/deleted. Arrrrrrgh :) Also, I had attempted a web search with the 劉歡)characters (I'm normally able to do searches with Cyrillic characters, and got only a couple of hits. I sill doubt the notariety of the person, but brought it up to the users' "vote". Thanks SkierRMH 08:37, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is what I fixed: [1] [2] [3]. And it's a Chinese person, so you'd probably use a search engine such as Baidu. MER-C 10:32, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your tying to help what seem pointless reversions on this art - I presume you are aware of 3RR and the fact this indiv has been having a regular go? SatuSuro 08:48, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not the worst I've seen. Yes, I'm aware of 3RR but it doesn't apply to reverting vandalism (otherwise I would only be half as effective). MER-C 11:01, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that - I suppose its the old 'wait and see' SatuSuro 13:17, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Help in New Article

What's up Mer-C, you seem to be knowledgeable. I created an article about a band called Heavy Trash. This is my first creation, I'm looking for advice on things like infobox and general formatting. Bio information is pretty scarce, so if you know anything about websites that deal with bands, that would be helpful as well. Anything would be appreciated. Thanks! Tractorkingsfan 12:59, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Formatting is the least of your concerns, especially with band articles. Here's what you should do before creating one:
Step 1: Make sure it's notable.
Step 2: Make sure it's verifiable. If so, cite reliable sources.
If it isn't both of the above, it's definitely deletable. I don't really know much about band websites because I just simply don't go there. They tend to be heavy on the bandwidth, light in content and not very reliable. Especially Myspace. Once you've dealt with that, feel free to come back. MER-C 09:34, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm assuming you looked at the page. They are definitely notable (I wouldn't have started it otherwise) seeing as how both members of the band are from notable bands, which in itself satisfies WP:Music. As far as verifiable, all that information comes from the two websites listed there, and I included notes within the text pointing to the external links. What other references should I look for? Tractorkingsfan 09:40, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Those two sites, the band's own website and their record company do not count as reliable sources. You need stuff from independant third parties (preferably reviews of their albums). MER-C 09:45, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'm not trying to be annoying, I just want to make it good. So, how would an album review give me anything other than a critic's opinion on thier music? Do I just look for independent information, say in a magazine, and then cite that information as references? Tractorkingsfan 09:49, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's exactly the right way to proceed. (Reviews also make it unambigious that the article meets WP:MUSIC and keeps it out of the path of deletionists like me). MER-C 09:51, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Got it. Thanks. Tractorkingsfan 09:53, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to ask you to reconsider your creation of the AfD for Dr.S. Hussain Zaheer Memorial High School. With a little bit of research, it is clear that the school is indeed notable, and the additional information has been added to the article with material from the school's web site and several references from The Hindu, India's main national newspaper. With its management and operation by the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, the school has a unique science program that allows students to learn from India's top scientists, and to have heard from several recent Nobel Prize in Chemistry laureates. The school competes in, and has won, at the top levels of sport in the state. I strongly suggest that all those who previously voted to Delete should re-read the article and reconsider their vote. vandalism report

I want to report a vandalism, and need help about it. HASAL page has been constantly editted by adding personal and political opinions, and false assumptions. Update: User page has now been deleted. They were linking articles to the user page (containing an advert) using an anon IP [5]. Not clever enough. Bubba hotep 10:13, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The question is, what was the content of the user page? Was it as same as what was on the talk page? I'm not too sure whether I can get any keywords out of that one because the only thing that makes it spam is the external link.
P.S. I just was distracted in real life while this went on. MER-C 11:09, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The user page was basically an advert for how to get the drugs mentioned on the talk page, complete with a link to their website. They may have tried to insert direct links into articles previously and got caught out so maybe thought this was a way of getting round that problem. PS I don't hold the distraction against you! ;) Bubba hotep 11:12, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was wrong. One-stop yielded 5 G11 speedies and 5 MFDs out of 50 or so pages (you can !vote for their deletion at WP:MFD). Affordable high-quality yielded 1 G11 speedy out of three pages. MER-C 11:39, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like my "input" on the MfD wasn't needed - most of them have gone now! To be honest, I just got lucky with the Pharmocology one - it was one of those that turn up on RC every now and then. I just have a knack of sniffing them out, I 'spose! Bubba hotep 21:33, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, what are your thoughts on this? Spiced ham? Bubba hotep 21:54, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, spam all right. The page history gives it away. MER-C 00:25, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Spamkill reminder

Remember to check the spammers' upload logs... I've caught one that uploaded a boatload of images with his website watermarked on them. {{db-spam}} applies to their images also. Kimchi.sg 12:51, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, I just noticed you did that with Image:LBI Logo 26-9-06 copy.jpg. Please ignore everything I just said. :-) Kimchi.sg 12:56, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summaries?

Hey there! I've noticed you often leave edit summaries such as "JS: Requesting speedy deletion (CSD A6)" in those new pages...are you using some kind of automated tool to do so? If so, where could I find it...it seems pretty useful? Many thanks, and keep up the good work on those new pages! Gzkn 13:18, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's part of VoA's recent changes patrol script. Another copy, by itself, is here. I actually wrote this version myself, (see the history of my monobook.js) as the circumstances called for it. MER-C 13:22, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Userpage for MfD

User:Mr. ? has made two edits outside of his page, the last one being in September. I don't want him to get annoyed with me, as I know him in real life. If you could MfD his page for me,that would be helpful. Thanks,  Jorcogα  23:05, 20 November 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Not yet. Users have to be totally inactive for at least several months. This guy's last edit was today. MER-C 00:26, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lists of idioms de-prodded

I have de-prodded the lists of idioms in the English language. This information is not generally found in dictionaries, as they are catchphrases and metaphors that have non-literal definitions, as opposed to mere words. I think the lists can be potentially very useful to people who may not recognize a particular phrase. List these over at AfD if you wish, but I think it at least deserves a community discussion. --Czj 02:06, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They're already at Wiktionary, see wikt:Category:Idioms. Bear in mind that Wikipedia is not a dictionary. MER-C 02:09, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
