Sockpuppets and VfDs

[edit]

Hi, LokiCT. I noticed your comments on the VfD talk page, and you don't seem to be taking the notice about your vote too well. I suppose that's understandable, whether or not you are editing from a sockpuppet account. To get to the point, your account activities point to the probability that this is a sockpuppet account.

(1.) You began editing the VfD 30 minutes after your first edit.
(2.) Several of your edits are to that and related VfDs.
(3.) Your contributions include a bunch of 10-second edits (and specifically small-stub creations) about random things, some of them non-notable. This is a typical smokescreen used by sockpuppets to increase apparent editing volume and deflect suspicion.
(4.) You have a quadrouple edit.

Now, all of these things could theoretically be explained by benign factors, but the presence of other potential sockpuppets on this VfD and the unlikely combination of suspicious factors surrounding your account create probable cause to investigate further. Now, if you are really not a sockpuppet, I suggest that you contact David Gerard. He has access to IP information that could either exonerate you or suggest your guilt. If he needs a possible "host account" (main account of user who created sockpuppets) to compare with, refer him to me, and I'll discuss it with him. As of now, I'd prefer not to mention my suspicions publicly. As a side note, I never believe that sockpuppetry is acceptable, and it's the manipulation of the system, not the orientation of the vote, that irks me. For my part, I look forward to finding you exonerated. Cheers, HKT talk 16:21, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Comments on Sockpuppetry

[edit]

I'm not sure whether it'll appease you or not, but I'm not a sock-puppet. I used to be User: ThePeacemaker, but David tempbanned that account because he thought I was a sockpuppet of User: Jeus, since we shared the same IP address. However, I wasn't then, and I'm not now. User: Jeus (as well as a few guys and girls I know) share a wi-fi signal on our flat. He personally got sick of WP, and I think he stopped using it a month ago. I know how to edit/make articles, et.al, because I *already had an account*. I decided to abandon The Peacemaker account so I wouldn't get falsely accused of puppetry again. AFAIK, the account is disabled. So anyway, I'd appreciate it if you could stop attacking me on the Vfd board without even attempting to contact me personally (which you've done now, and I thank you for). LokiCT 18:22, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot to note in my previous message: I make little edits because I usually don't have the time or desire to create huge mods to articles. In particular, I catch things on the 'current events' page, and try to fill in red links with a primer for an article. WP is a blue-based site, and I can't stand the red-base at all. I don't think it's against the rules to make minor edits, at any rate. Each person contributes in different ways. LokiCT 18:27, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

IP checks aren't the only indicators of sockpuppetry. Now, it's possible that you and Jeus (talk · contribs) think alike, edit alike, and are equally proficient in exactly the same languages (after all, birds of a feather, etc.), but it's highly unlikely. Also, the The Peacemaker (talk · contribs) account started on July 17, which doesn't give you much experience. "I know how to edit/make articles, et.al, because I *already had an account*" doesn't fly with me.
You write: "I make little edits because I usually don't have the time or desire to create huge mods to articles." However, your editing style is quite consistent with Jeus' editing style.
"User: Jeus (as well as a few guys and girls I know) share a wi-fi signal on our flat." This is a convenient excuse, but there's not much of a way to verify it.
"I'd appreciate it if you could stop attacking me on the Vfd board without even attempting to contact me personally...." I just pointed out the suspicious facts on the VfD page, as a responsible editor would, never having presented any conclusions. Deleting such a notice, however tempting, is vandalism.
Am I 100% sure that your not a sockpuppet? No, but I'm close. And sorry, I'm not "appeased." HKT talk 22:23, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I guess I should give him some more credit (he was the one who taught me to use WP). Before I registered as TPM, I made quite a few edits anonymously when I was at college. Eventually, peer pressure convinced me to get an actual userid (which I did this summer), instead of signing about with an IP. I'm sorry about the vandalism earlier on the Vfd page -- I was simply irked at what seemed like someone questioning my edits due to my # of contributions. I'm not a newbie at WP, even though my postcount would indicate otherwise. Personally, I wasn't aware that he (Joey, aka Jeus) often did the short edit thing too. I just asked him though, and he said he did. Anyway, I won't remove your comments next time.

Oh, and I copied the language id from another user, because it fit mine. Joey, Alise...everyone that lives on my flat speaks English and various degrees of Spanish, because we all took it in high school. He's not my twin, but I could see how it might look that way.LokiCT 23:34, 26 July 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, well, there's no way for me to confirm or deny what you claim, though I'll admit that it's fairly plausible. If you're an independent user, then I'm sorry that you've ended up in such an unfortunate situation. Practically, though, I'm leaning towards the position that prudence demands a more aggressive response to situations like yours, despite potential harm to innocent users. Indeed, most anyone could fabricate a story like yours. For what it's worth, I do thank you for the reasonable interchange and for your willingness to leave the notice on the VfD as is. Don't know what else to say. HKT talk 04:51, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Image-229141-1484.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Superm401 | Talk 03:28, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! You have edited the Katie Holmes page in the past. I've completely reworked the article and have posted it on WP:PR in the hopes of advancing it to WP:FAC. I would be grateful for your comments at Wikipedia:Peer review/Katie Holmes/archive1. PedanticallySpeaking 18:51, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
