Welcome to the 2020 WikiCup!
Happy New Year, Happy New Decade and Happy New WikiCup! The competition begins today and all article creators, expanders and improvers are welcome to take part. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page. We are relaxing the rule that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2020 will count; now to be eligible for points in the competition, you must have completed significant work on the content at some time! Any questions on the rules or on anything else connected to the Cup should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. Good luck! The judges for the WikiCup are Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email), Godot13 (talk · contribs · email), Vanamonde93 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:43, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
Poster question
If I could trouble you with another question when you get a chance...I'd like to add a poster image to the info box for Gentlemen's Fury but don't want to use anything that might have copyright issues. Do you have any advice about getting a poster image that is acceptable? Btw I'm new to Wikipedia and unfamiliar with proper etiquette, so if the help desk is better for something like this, I apologize. Thanks for your help. Best, Cleobarbara (talk) 23:47, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
- Sure, no problem Cleobarbara. Images are among the harder concepts on wikipedia, as they revolve around real copyright law (which can get a little confusing). Basically, there are two places to upload images - Wikimedia commons, and the English Wikipedia itself. Commons is only for free images - ones that you, yourself have taken, or have sole copyright for (as well as those officially released under CC-BY-SA. Sadly, posters 100% have a copyright, so they are out.
- The second option is where to go here. On the left hand side of wikipedia, there is an "upload file" option, which takes you to our Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard. Posters come under Fair Use, so the option is "This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use." then "This is the official cover art of a work." and "movie poster". You will need to fill out the form (to the best of your ability), and then put the image into the infobox.
- Give it a go, and let me know how you get on. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 12:43, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for the info, Lee Velenski. I followed the steps you suggested and uploaded the image. I was given an alert to add fair use rationale along with the source and copyright info for each use. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to do that when putting the image into the infobox, and if so, how. So I just put it in the infobox, and so far so good. But if there's specific fair use rationale/copyright info I'm supposed to add to the infobox along with the image, please let me know. Thanks again for your help. A barnstar for you!

I've only just discovered how to do this and so here is a belated reward for your help on the Wiki Help page etc. You certainly are a tireless helper! Cheers gobears87 (talk) 01:40, 8 January 2020 (UTC) |
p.s. I have no idea why it automatically put this on the talk page instead of your main page where the others are. But I am still wiki-learning so... ?!
- Hi gobears87, thank you! No, this is the correct location for barnstars (you shouldn't really edit another users page directly) as I usually copy mine to my user page to catalogue them. If you wish for any further help, just start a new topic here and I'll get back to you. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 08:19, 8 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi, you forgot to close the template. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 20:13, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
- Done. Apologies Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 20:17, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
- One thing about this one that I noticed: it looks like you changed the DYKmake credit for Piotrus to a DYKnom. It was correct as DYKmake: people who both make significant contributions to the article and nominate it get a DYKmake; people who nominate articles they didn't do significant work on just get a DYKnom. We typically go with whatever is on the nomination template in terms of DYKmake and/or DYKnom, unless someone is given a DYKmake and a DYKnom for the same article, in which case they just get the DYKmake. (The DYKnom template does not have a "subpage" parameter, unlike the DYKmake template, where subpage sometimes needs to be filled in. If, when looking at the displayed prep area credits section once you're done, an article line doesn't end in a "View nom subpage" link, then the DYKmake needs a subpage field.) BlueMoonset (talk) 23:12, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
- thanks for letting me know! I was going by the items on the template, denoting a nom, I didn't see that it was trumped by make.
I appreciate the comments and I'll update from what's actually on the nomination template in future. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 10:06, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
Reversed two GA promotions
Lee Vilenski, I just reversed two of your recent DYK promotions to prep. They were taken from the Nominations page, and neither had a tick as their most recent icon, meaning they were not approved.
People making preps can only promote nominations that are approved; they should also not promote nominations that they themselves have approved. So in such cases as Template:Did you know nominations/Ocean Wind and Template:Did you know nominations/Cecylia and Maciej Brogowski, you could have approved them but not promoted them, or waited until someone approved them for you to promote them.
As it says at WP:DYKSG#Rules of thumb for preparing updates, Updates should be filled from the approved nominations page
. If you promote from there and the nomination has a tick as its last icon, you're working with an eligible nomination. That's one reason we set up the Approved page, and moved the Special occasions section there: it's one-stop shopping for promotable nominations. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 22:50, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
- thanks for letting me know. I thought I had taken them from that list. I'll be a bit more careful in future. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 10:08, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

Kenny Omega RfC
Hey there, Lee Vilenski. Thanks again for promoting the Kenny Omega article to GA last year! I wanted to reach out and see if you were interested in presenting your take on this RfC about the article's lead section. I figured that the discussion would benefit greatly from your view in the same way the GA nomination did. Cheers! KyleJoantalk 18:28, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
- KyleJoan - I've actually come across it a couple of times, but never really found much impotus to reply. I don't really see much of a need to stress the difference, as such I haven't commented. In my eyes, the lede is a summary of the prose, so it shouldn't matter too much if we say he signed for the WWE, and went to developmental, or that he signed for WWE developmental. I think the later is probably less accurate, but realistically, it's such a small amount of the bio that it's WP:WEIGHT is almost irrelevant. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 18:50, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
- As much as Deep South was a part of the development system, could we not simply comment that he was there, and not mention the WWE at all? It's hardly important (only to people to say "oh, this guy never worked for the WWE", etc.) Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 18:53, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
- Right now, the discussion seems to be heading toward not mentioning WWE or DSW in the lead at all, which I'm not against either. My original intent was to mention WWE alongside ROH to illustrate the big promotions under which he has been contracted but even saying as much might be undue. Either way, thank you for your input!
