Galaxy groups: Please be careful adding them

[edit]

I noticed that you have been adding multiple galaxy groups to Wikipedia based on a 1975 reference. The group identifications could be misleading or plainly out-of-date, as two prominent group identification methods (the hierarchical group identification method and the friends-of-friends method) have been developed since 1975 and multiple studies have produced better group identification results. You may want to check the following references:

  • The Nearby Galaxies Catalog (Tully 1988), accessible from VizieR if you search for "Nearby Galaxies Catalog".
  • The Garcia (1993) survey, available either here or at VizieR if you search for "LGG Garcia".
  • The Giuricin et al. (2000) survey, available either here or at VizieR if you search for "Giuricin 2000".

Please use these catalogs to check for group identification and membership. For example, the NGC 2841 group does not exist according to any of these references. Giuricin et al. indicates that NGC 2841 is only part of a galaxy pair, and Tully indicates that NGC 2841 is only in an association. Garcia does not even list it, which indicates that NGC 2841 was not identified as belonging to a group. It seems strange to have a Wikipedia entry for something that does not exist.

Also note that these catalogs sometimes produce contradictory results. That means that the identification of these groups is still uncertain, so you may want to be cautious adding these groups to Wikipedia.

Could you check the question on Talk:GR 8 where I mention seeing the declination starting with positive sign? And I've been searching for a public image of it, tantalized by the reference in the first external link to an HST picture that's 'purty'. Shenme 08:06, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please reference source

[edit]

I see that you have created or edited a lot of galaxy pages. Could you please cite your sources? Please look at Wikipedia:Citing sources. Thank you. George J. Bendo 21:28, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
