Image copyright problem with Image:Lauren Photo.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Lauren Photo.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}
.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. Orphaned fair use image (Image:Lauren 2.jpg)
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Lauren 2.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image can be used under a fair use license. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 23:11, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Fan photo.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Fan photo.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 23:14, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Images for Lauren Jones article
[edit]Hi! I understand that the images that I placed for reference for Lauren Jones were removed. Is it possible that you could help me find or state the accurate information so that the images can go up again? I need guidance. You can send me info at Lauren Jones under my talk. Thank you for your time!
- Hello, Lauren. The images that I removed from the Lauren Jones article were all being used under a claim of fair use, which means that they are copyrighted, unlicensed images. The goal of Wikipedia is to produce an encyclopedia of free content that anyone can use in any way. To reach this goal, we require that all of our images be released by the copyright holder under a free license, such as the GFDL. Fair-use images are not free to use by anyone in any way, because they are copyrighted and the copyright holder has not licensed them freely. Wikipedia policy is to use fair-use images only if there is no freely licensed substitute available.
- In the case of the Lauren Jones article, we have access to Image:Lauren Jones 7.jpg, which has been licensed under a free Creative Commons license. (We also have access to several other freely licensed images; see the Lauren Jones page on the Wikimedia Commons). These freely licensed images are much better for Wikipedia articles than fair-use images, since the users of Wikipedia can use the freely licensed images however they like.
- In order for images like Image:LLJ.jpg to be used freely on Wikipedia, the copyright holder needs to release the image under a free license. Note that the copyright holder is usually the photographer, not the subject of the photo. There are several free licenses to choose from; there's a list at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Free licenses. If the copyright holder is willing to release his or her work under such a free license, then we can edit the image description page to indicate the appropriate license. For example, if the photographer agrees to release the photo under the GFDL, we can add the {{GFDL}} tag. Then this image can be used freely anywhere on Wikipedia. Since it has been licensed under the GFDL, it can also be used anywhere else: in books, magazines, T-shirts, and so on. Prints of the image can be sold by anyone. It can also be modified by anyone, and the modifications can be sold or printed anywhere. The only restriction is that modifications of the image must also be released under the GFDL. Most other free licenses have similar terms.
- On the other hand, you should keep in mind that the goal of Wikipedia is to produce an encylopedia. Wikipedia is not a repository of images. If an image significantly improves an article, then it should be included. But it is easy to overdo it. If there are many images that you think would be helpful in the Lauren Jones article, probably the best thing to do would be to make a gallery at the bottom. You can type something like the following in a "Gallery" section.
<gallery>
Image:Zzcutielaurenj.jpg
Image:Lauren Jones zzcclj4.jpg
Image:Lauren Jones img1735259.jpg
</gallery>
- This will make an image gallery, which looks like this:
- One last thing: When you leave a message on a talk page, you can sign your name with four tildes, like this:
~~~~
. This will insert your username, a link to your user page, and the current time. It's very helpful to people who want to reply to your messages. - If I can help you at all, or if you have any questions, please let me know. —Bkell (talk) 00:21, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- Another option I forgot to mention is for the copyright holder to abandon all rights to the image forever. This is what I do with the images that I create, because I want anyone to be able to use them in any way, unencumbered by even the minimal restrictions of free licenses such as the GFDL, and I don't want anyone to run into any kind of licensing hassles with my images. This is what is meant by public domain: when an image (or a book, or a musical composition, or whatever) enters the public domain, it means that the author has formally abandoned all exclusive rights to the image (either voluntarily or because the copyright has expired). Note that "public domain" does not mean "publicly available"—there is a big difference, but many people confuse the two.
- The main difference between releasing an image into the public domain and licensing it under the GFDL is that the GFDL requires modifications of the image to also be released under the GFDL. Both public domain and GFDL allow anyone to use the image for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial.
- If the copyright holder agrees to abandon all rights, you can tag the image with {{PD-release}} or {{No rights reserved}}. You should also give some evidence that the copyright holder really has agreed to release all rights, because it is unusual for a professional photographer to abandon all the rights to one of his or her photographs. —Bkell (talk) 00:35, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
re image Lauren_orange_bikini
[edit]Hi Lauren. I deleted the image because, unless I erred, it had been described when uploaded as being licensed only for use on Wikipedia or only for non-commercial/educational use. Such images are not allowed on Wikipedia - to use the image it has to be released entirely into the pubic domain for anyone to use as they see fit, or released under the GDFL license which amounts to basically the same thing. (An exception is made for fair use images, but this was not being used in a fair-use way, it was not being used anywhere at the time). See WP:C for more info. Image tagging for Image:Lauren_Jones,_Miss_New_York_UN_2006.JPG
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Lauren_Jones,_Miss_New_York_UN_2006.JPG.
