Undisclosed Paid Editing
[edit]Hello Laura bachrach. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, and that you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially egregious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to Black hat SEO.
Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists, and if it does not, from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.
Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Laura bachrach. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Laura bachrach|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}
. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, please do not edit further until you answer this message. SpitfireTally-ho! 03:14, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
Hi. I do not work for the company nor do I have any financial stake in anything. I did not know that I was not allowed the edit the article that I started. Please let me know next steps. Thank you. (Laura bachrach (talk) 03:31, 21 December 2017 (UTC)).
- Hi Laura, I found the website of a "Laura Bachrach" who works as a PR manager, and mentions on her website that she creates wikipedia articles for clients, I assumed that this was you. This especially seems likely since most your article submissions are for companies or individuals who require PR management.
- If you are creating Wikipedia articles as part of your PR management role, this is completely fine and you can continue, but first you must disclose this on your userpage following the instructions above. Failure to do so could result in you being blocked and bringing your company and clients into disrepute.
- However, if as you say, you are not a PR manager and are just editing for the joy of it, then that's great! That is completely fine and you can continue to edit as normal.
- Any other questions please let me know!
- Cheers, SpitfireTally-ho! 03:44, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
Yes, that is my website and while I do PR, I no longer work on my own nor have clients anymore. With this in mind should I disclose that I am a PR person but that I am not working on behalf of anyone? Sorry for all of the questions. (Laura bachrach (talk) 04:05, 21 December 2017 (UTC))
- Hi Laura, since you're not actually editing on behalf of anyone or being paid for it currently, there's no requirement for you to disclose anything on your userpage. This conversation also serves as a record of you stating that although you are a PR-person but are not editing wikipedia in connection with this role. So you can continue to edit as before. That said, you optionally may want to say something on your userpage about this, which will hopefully prevent other suspicious users from questioning you and you having to explain again.
- If you have any further questions feel free to ask and I'll check again tomorrow. Happy christmas! SpitfireTally-ho! 04:13, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
Hi. Is it appropriate to write this on my user page? "Please note that while I work in public relations, I am not editing Wikipedia in connection with my role as a PR professional or on behalf of any company or individual". Thank you for your guidance (and patience). Laura. Laura bachrach (talk) 16:49, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
- Hiya Laura, that would be perfect, yes. SpitfireTally-ho! 01:04, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
