License tagging for Image:Landaufamily.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Landaufamily.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 05:08, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, Image:Landaufamily.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please look there to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. Orphaned means the image is not being used anywhere on Wikipedia. It's easy to tell this by looking at the "File Links" section on the image page. This is easy to fix by including it in an appropriate article, or if it's your self image on your userpage. Wikipedia only wants free content, not images that have restrictions on the license. The terms you put under the copyright use license aren't free enough for Wikipedia. This is easy to fix by you changing the license to a more free one, such as GFDL-self, though only if you own the copyright to the image and there are other licenses you can use, such as some Creative Commons licenses. I say it's unencyclopedic because I don't see how this image could be used on any article. Lastly, uploading this image was your first contribution, and all your edits are to this image or to my talk page. Wikipedia is not a free file host, and it appears that you are using it as such. Wikipedia's goal is to build a free (including images used) encyclopedia. We allow some images for use on userpages as part of a community aspect as an end goal to help build the encyclopedia, but we don't allow free hosting of images, especially for new editors that have done no work to the encyclopedia. You are more than welcome to stay, but please keep that idea in mind. All the above information in the green box will be of help to get you started. If you choose not you, no big deal. There are websites where you can post your images and host them freely, I recommend http://www.photobucket.com and http://www.flickr.com . Good luck! --MECUtalk 14:27, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I just re-read your comments on my talk page about how you plan to write/build information about the family name. You should definitely read this policy: Wikipedia is not for original research. We can only use information that has been published by a reliable third party. I'm also not sure that an article about the family name would be notable enough for Wikipedia, but I could be wrong (won't be the first time). See Landau (disambiguation) for a listing of some (if not all) the articles we have about "Landau". --MECUtalk 14:33, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
