Classical music pictures

[edit]

There is no need for two pictures of an orchestra in the same section. Yes, one is a full orchestra and one is a chamber orchestra, but they're both still orchestras. All the instruments generally found in a chamber orchestra can generally be found in a full orchestra. The concert band, on the other hand, is a different ensemble from an orchestra. There are quite a few instruments found commonly in the concert band that are not as common in the orchestra. I am adding back the concert band picture. Saxophilist (talk) 00:04, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Once more, I'd argue that it really doesn't matter that both images depict an orchestra. From the perspective of a layman reader, an image showing a variety of instruments 'up close' will prove more informative than a second image of a group of performing musicians. Remember, the passage is on instrumentation. Sure, your image illustrates a great deal more instruments than mine, but I would argue that a good second image for this passage needn't illustrate every instrument under the sun; instead, it should focus on showing a variety of classical instruments 'up close', and on providing contrast to the first image. I would argue that your choice of image doesn't offer much with regard to the point you're making (orchestra vs. concert band) until it is enlarged. Okay, we can keep your orchestra picture, but the other orchestra picture is going to be replaced. Saxophilist (talk) 18:18, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I replaced the full orchestra image with the concert band image. I also added a new, more specific subtitle to your image. Is this compromise agreeable? Saxophilist (talk) 18:26, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would argue that the page in its old form is misleading. In my opinion, the image of the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra should definitely remain. The second image can go for all I care - but on the condition that the new image offers the reader something similar in the 'up close' sense. A collage of instruments commonly seen in classical music would be ideal. Lan berger (talk) 21:15, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Concert bands are very common and wide-spread. There needs to be representation of the ensemble on the classical music page. Baroque ensembles (like your image), on the other hand, are not common. We either have 3 images, or your image has to go. I'm replacing your image. You can add it back as a 3rd image or just leave it out. Saxophilist (talk) 21:52, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Classical music talk page

[edit]

Since you're the one who wanted to change the picture in the first place, head on over to the talk:Classical music and start a section explaining your proposal. Other users will comment and we shall reach a consensus. Again, since it was your proposal in the first place, you need to start a discussion. The concert band image will stay unless you can get other users to agree with you. Saxophilist (talk) 16:18, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I added your image back to the Classical music page. It is now in the baroque section of the article, as that is a more appropriate place for it. Saxophilist (talk) 16:26, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
