Wikipedia Help Survey

Hi there, my name's Peter Coombe and I'm a Wikimedia Community Fellow working on a project to improve Wikipedia's help system. At the moment I'm trying to learn more about how people use and find the current help pages. If you could help by filling out this brief survey about your experiences, I'd be very grateful. It should take less than 10 minutes, and your responses will not be tied to your username in any way.

Thank you for your time,

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Are you Filipino-American?

Hi, I noticed that you contribute to Ilokano Wikipedia a lot and I just want to ask if you have Filipino ancestry considering you're from the US. Thank you for your contributions for the Ilokano language. Darwgon0801 (talk) 11:13, 16 November 2016 (UTC)

Edit to Module:Autotaxobox/sandbox

Hi, could you explain the reason for your edit to Module:Autotaxobox/sandbox? I noticed that the sandbox was way out of line with the live version, and so synchronized them, which had the side-effect of undoing your edit. It can be made again if justified. Peter coxhead (talk) 07:51, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

@Peter coxhead:I was trying to fix this error/testcases with this edit, I wasn’t sure if the error produced by the module is intentional or not, don’t know much about coding Lua but seems to fix it at ilowiki.--Lam-ang (talk) 16:11, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
@Lam-ang: ah, all the test cases used to work, but the taxonomy template this one uses has changed. The code was definitely wrong; the correction required is to change line 256 from local extinct = string.lower(frame.args['extinct']) or '' to local extinct = string.lower(frame.args['extinct'] or ''). If |extinct= is unset in the taxonomy template, then frame.args['extinct'] will have the value nil and so string.lower fails, whereas frame.args['extinct'] or '' will be the empty string, so string.lower works. The conversion to lower case just allows, e.g., |extinct=Yes to mean the same as |extinct=yes. It may not be needed at ilowiki. I've now applied this fix to the live and sandbox versions of the module. Peter coxhead (talk) 16:39, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Reflist port help

Hi Lam-ang,

I've been using your transfer guide, thanks for making that. I'm curious if you can help me sort out a problem. I've copied all the pages to my personal MediaWiki (using a Bitnami stack), but {{reflist}} isn't working properly. I copied the code from the template page here, but on my wiki everything after the ">" is messed up. Here's a screenshot. If you have any ideas on how to fix this I'd appreciate it very much.  White Whirlwind  咨  16:43, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

@White whirlwind: - make sure you have the latest versions of extensions Cite and Scribunto, Wikimedia projects with automatic columns for references have 'wgCiteResponsiveReferences' set to true on InitialiseSettings.php, I'm not sure where this will be set-up on your environment (maybe LocalSettings.php). I hope this will help. --Lam-ang (talk) 17:27, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
@Lam-ang: I think I have fixed the problem. My stack didn't come with the proper calls for some key extensions in the LocalSettings.php as described here.  White Whirlwind  咨  20:09, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
I'm glad you got it working--Lam-ang (talk) 20:23, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

A beer for you!

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!
