Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions to the Association of Moving Image Archivists article, but for legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.3 and later."

  • I can't. The content has to be released on your site to the GNU Free Documentation License. Until then, it's copyrighted text which can't stay here. Problem: Releasing your text to the GNU puts your existing copyright in jeopardy. Anyone can then use it. My usual suggestion to those who wish to post material they own on this site (itself something of a conflict of interest) is to write about the subject in your own words, using your site as a reference. Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thanks for uploading File:AMIA conference 2006 audience.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

As I made very clear in the picture captions and the article to which they are linked, I took these photos and uploaded them, and violated no-one's copyright but my own in doing so. Please stop vandalising other people's work , concentrate on the numerous and blatant copyright infringements that are littered all over Wikipedia, and remove the 'speedy deletion' bullshit from these entries (and the page to which the pictures are linked) immediately. Respecting copyright is one thing: bombarding people who upload their own work, and who freely volunteer to donate it to the public domain, with threats to delete it and thousands of words of convoluted, conflicting and ambiguous guidelines to wade through if they want to prevent it from being deleted is not exactly the right way of encouraging high quality content on this site. Hi, It's not my intention to badger you but as you say there are numerous blatant copyright infringements on the site which is why we require license information to be explicitly stated. In this case it doesn't say anywhere on the images that you intended to release them as public domain, and people unfortunately often add confusing information, for example here you say you "LDGE" uploaded the images and then cite "Leo Enticknap" as the author and link to a website that says that no copying is allowed. I take it that you are Leo Enticknap then, in wich case you are absolutely free to release those images as you see fit, but to avoid future confution it would be a good idea if you could either put a notice on your website that you have in fact released those images as public domain (or send an e-mail to the permissions OTRS que (see WP:COPYREQ) for details. At the very least it would be good if you yourself edited those image pages to add {{PD-self}} and tweak the description a little bit to make it clear that the website you linked to is in fact your own site. Those photos aren't on my website. They haven't been published anywhere else before I uploaded them to this site. I only put a link to it because the field asked for the name of the author (not his login ID for the site), and it seemed sensible to provide a link just in case anyone wanted to contact me about the photos or the article to which they are linked. I have sent an email to the address you gave earlier stating that I took these photos and hereby agree to release them into the PD.
