Minor edits

[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions. Please mark your edits as "minor" only if they are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Tip or Birth

[edit]

Information icon Hello. This is a message to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions, such as the edit you made to Help:IPA/Hindi and Urdu, did not appear constructive and has been reverted. Please take some time to familiarise yourself with our policies and guidelines. You can find information about these at our welcome page which also provides further information about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. If you only meant to make test edits, please use the sandbox for that. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you may leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. Idell (talk) 06:22, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for correction but why is 'tip' better than 'birth'? Tip is an english word [tʰɪp], [t] here is alveolar not dental as in /t̪ʰ/.It would clearly sound like tʰ sound(ट) not dental t̪ʰ (त)..please answer. I can't read Arabic or urdu script, maybe which is why I couldn't understand. Lastly, if. ث is distinct from تھ in urdu, why not make separate pages for hindi and urdu? Dental stops

[edit]

Hi, I just thought I'd let you know that while you've recently added the dental stop diacritic symbols in some IPA help pages and a few Wikipedia articles, most Wikipedia articles avoid using the dental symbol in IPA transcriptions (IPA help pages like Bengali, French and Spanish avoid using this even though d and t are pronounced as dental stops in those languages) just like for Help:IPA/English, the alveolar approximant symbol [ɹ] is instead transcribed as [r] even though that is the alveolar trill symbol, so while I agree with your viewpoint this excluding this symbol makes the transcriptions more ambiguous, we need to be consistent with the other IPA help pages and transcriptions which exclude it, so I have reverted some of your changes. Broman178 (talk) 09:46, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think Help:IPA/English is doing so cuz it's made to cover all the dialects of English. Some people pronunce it as a trill[r] while other as an approxomant[ɹ]. What I mean by that is even though there are different variant of r sound in English, help ipa English page regards /r/ as a phoneme(not specific variant). I thought we could not compare help ipa-xx with Help Ipa English. This may be I didn't understand what you're trying to express. Why do bengali, and other avoid? There is even more ambiguity while affricates are with the same symbols? Please forgive me for it may sound rude, it's just cuz I am not a native English speaker. User:Tspielberg (talk) 10:05, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Its not completely clear to me either but I think the reason most IPA articles in Wikipedia exclude the dental diacritics for direct IPA transcriptions is because dental consonants like d̪ and t̪ are considered as allophones of d and t respectively and not as actual phonemes (as d and t are the main transcribed phonemes). However, if you still strongly believe that the dental diacritics should be featured in Wikipedia articles with IPA's, I would suggest you raise the issue in the main Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Linguistics and see if you can gain consensus on it. Hope this reply helps, many thanks. Broman178 (talk) 12:43, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your prompt response. I believe I've found answers to the questions. You can check the threads regarding this issue on the talk page of help ipa Hindi/Urdu. Initially, I thought this was a negligence of IPA, but now I don't. Many Wikipedia users think the same way I thought. Nardog and kbb2 explained the reason brilliantly and there are some good reasons to do so. Frankly speaking, I still can't take the fact we use just [t] for dental. It will definitely take time to embrace the fact. Thanks! User:Tspielberg (talk) 14:03, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Unsourced Nepal IPA Pronunciation

[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Pyrofloe. I noticed that you added or changed the stress/pronunciation IPA of the word "Nepal" in the article, I reverted it for now as you didn't provide a reliable source. If you'd like to cite a source for the IPA pronunciation, I encourage you to do it. Please reply here if you think that I made a mistake. PyroFloe (talk) 14:00, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think I can provide any source for that word. Well, I am a native speaker of the language and it's clear to me that the word doesn't have primary stress specifically not before second syllable "pal". I suggest you to get rid of the stress(ˈ) completely. User:Tspielberg (talk) 14:49, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Balen Shah moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Balen Shah, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.
