Masaki Kobayashi

[edit]

Hello Kudpung,
I don't know whom else to ask, the portion of this page https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Masaki_Kobayashi#Provenance is a machine translation from Japanese and doesn't make much sense. Is there any special way to tag it to bring this issue to people's attention? It's odd that nobody has noticed it. Please advise. Thank you. Philburmc (talk) 03:11, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Philburmc, thanks for the heads up. This was added in this edit by La marts boys who according to their talk page, has a troubled history of contributions with many warnings. This is indeed a machine translation - I assume as you say, from Japanese, and probably from the Japanese Wikipedia. As it stands, it is totally unsourced so it has no place in a bio, whether living or dead. As a translation, it is not attributed, and finally, the translation is so poor that it would need a complete rewrite by a bilingual to make any sense. I've taken it out. Unfortunately, protecting the page won't help against such editors, and fp would be too heavy-handed. I will leave a message for the editor and we'll see what happens. Do keep an eye on it and if any admin action is required, please let me know. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:54, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Kudpung, Thank you very much for your help and advice. I checked - it was indeed machine-translated from the Japanese Wikipedia. Philburmc (talk) 14:56, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]
Hello, I ran across your name when leaving a message to another editor. Comments you had made ("This doesn't impact my view of you as an admin...) made me think that editor was an Admin until I looked closer. This led me to your user page, I saw you were the Admin, also saw the quotes, and I wanted to state "thanks for those".
Other than the accolades I would like to know if you would look at the "Article merge" discussion (above). I either did alright or need a fish-slap as an involved editor should not actually close a discussion. My rationale was provided, apparently not (hasn't been in months) controversial, and had I just agreed I could have boldly made the merge as uncontroversial. After reflecting I am not sure the direction was proper so won't do it again even if acceptable. Anyway, I just wanted to make sure I did things correctly. Damon Runyon's short story "Dancing Dan's Christmas" is a fun read if you have the time. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry

This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.

No matter what concoction is your favorite to imbibe during this festive season I would like to toast you with it and to thank you for all your work here at the 'pedia this past year. Best wishes for your 2020 as well K. MarnetteD|Talk 02:28, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks MarnetteD, and thank you for your monumental contribs to Wikipedia. Except for Western expats and the western shopping spree that has been adopted here, Christmas is very much a non event as it is not part of the Buhddist calendar in Thailand (where there are already more public holidays than in any other country). Personally, I don't drink much alcohol at all and I've never really understood why this season of the year should be a reason for anyone to drink more of it.
That said, I really do enjoy Herrenhäuser pilsner beer which I practically 'grew up' with in Germany; I drink draft Guiness in England because I can't stomach that British beer. I'm dedicated to Lirac, Vacqueras, and Gigondas wines from my Côtes du Rhône homeland; Bailey's - because I get as much miniature bottles as I like free on Emirates, and I like a little known mixer, 'Southern', of Southern Comfort and Schweppes Ginger Ale which I discovered in a Jazz venue near Hannover way back in 1974.
Here in Thailand I'll drink the occasional can or bottle of Beer Leo if I'm with friends - drinkable wine is just too expensive and too hard to get as visitors to Wikimania 2020 will soon find out. There you go. Cheers! Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:51, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the compliment and this wonderful message K. Lots of interesting links for me to read and learn from. In a remarkable coincidence Southern Comfort and ginger ale was the first thing I ever got drunk on in 1975!!! Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 04:23, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well, well MarnetteD, that is indeed a coincidence! The owner of that bar in Hannover (where I later played several times myself) always claimed he had invented the mix himself. It did wonders for my fusion-funk grooves so I had no reason to disbelieve him! Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:37, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. I was visiting my friend who was a year older and already in college and that was the drink they made in his dorm. Whoo wee I think ya gotta be that young to drink things so sweet :-P MarnetteD|Talk 04:40, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I indulged myself on my 70th birthday this year on a bottle of CNDP (vinyards one mile up the road from my home in France), which I had bought in the duty free shop on the Laos border near my home here and laid down for a couple of years for the occasion. Not as sweet as 'Southern', but wonderfully dark and fruity, very heady at 15%, and really silky once those tannins had had time to break down. Try it MarnetteD - it's not so easy to get get Vacqueras or Gigondas in the USA, which are just as good but less expensive, but I did once find a bottle of similar but cheaper Cairanne in a small store in a Brooklyn side street which I enjoyed with DGG over dinner. You might find them in Waitrose or a good off-license. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 05:24, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Looks wonderful K. There is a wine shop in my neighborhood that, if they don't already have it, can track them down. Many thanks for the recommendation. MarnetteD|Talk 06:07, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Forgot to leave a link to this which I shared with the friends at the tail gate party before attending a performance of La bohème at the Santa Fe Opera on my birthday last summer. Mmmm MarnetteD|Talk 06:35, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for continuing to make Wikipedia the greatest project in the world. I hope you have an excellent holiday season. Lightburst (talk) 16:35, 25 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you edited this talk page's headers recently and so I have a question for you...I went to check this talk page just now and was surprised to find out that AceAlen had deleted posts & threads off of the main talk and not moved them to the Archives. I'm going to move them to the Archives but as for the action...I don't quite know what to do about this but would like your thoughts on the situation. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 01:27, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Shearonink, I have left an appropriate message at User talk:AceAlen. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:10, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I went ahead and restored the deleted posts/threads to Talk:Old Orchard Beach, Maine/Archive 1 and left a notice about attribution on AceAlen's user talk. But have come across another issue of concern. This editor in the past has changed Wikipedia:Top 25 Report/July 2 to 8, 2017 and now he's changing Wikipedia:Top 25 Report/July 2 to 8, 2017 again. I had always thought the Top 25 pages were basically to be left untouched, like archive-pages. Am I wrong? Shearonink (talk) 01:51, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Shearonink, I'll leave you to decide whether or not in your opinion AceAlen's edits are appropriate - it's not mainspace and thus not an area I want to spent time analysing. However, if you feel the edits are getting particularly disruptive, ANI would be the right venue. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:17, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks Kudpung for your thoughts - I just wasn't sure what to do, I guess AN/I is always possible in the end. I did post a query on the Top 25 Report's main talk page to see what their thoughts might be. If they don't have an issue with it then I don't either. Further education

[edit]

Hi Kudpung, hope you had a good Christmas. I just wanted to ask you a question regarding further education. WikiProject Schools intro states that it includes further education but I've noticed many of the further education articles have WikiProject Universities on the talk page with some using Infobox university instead of Infobox school, shall I change them all? Steven (Editor) (talk) 20:16, 27 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Steven (Editor), The lede paragraph at WP:WPSCH (and its footnote) describes exactly what we cover. Created as a fork from Wikiproject Universities 14 years ago, it's possible that some non-university Tertiary education establishments are still using WikiProject Universities infoboxes and/or are listed in WikiProject Universities, but today this would of course be wrong. It would probably be a mammoth task to change them all now, and as a time vs benefit exercise, there are far more urgent tasks awaiting attention. It might surprise you that we don't actually know how many schools we have in our project. Many get created and escape the WP:SCH banner or don't have cats added by their creators or NPPers. Also, nowadays, although I fiercley defend notability for schools (until it is changed by a clear consensus), since the virtual explosion of articles from South Asia and the vast majority of new school articles now coming from there , Wikipedia is rapidly filling up with really non-notable school stubs from that region. There are two users who consistently attack innocuous school articles and take entire batches of them to AfD to the point of disruption, so its essential that coords have the ArticleAlertBot on their watchlists and participate objectively at all school AfDs in order to maintain the SNG which has been established by long precedent. It would also be good to see some more schools elevated to GA, and also get a couple of FA on board. I do indeed keep an extremely watchfull eye over WP:WPSCH but since John from Idegon and ClemRutter became coords, I no longer consider myself the lead coord so It's probably best to start discussions like these at WT:WPSCH, because I do note for example, that Clem is also giving the project an overdue overhaul, and John is still doing a lot of work despite being on a sabbatical from his coordship. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:34, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
14 years ago, wowzers haha - you are absolutely right regarding the uncertainty of how many schools we have in our project; I have come across many that do not have the WikiProject Schools template which I have added but how many more are there is the question, including cats. I have also noticed the large increase in articles from the Asia region, most of the new articles I have moved to draftspace have come from that region and as you have said, filling up with non-notable school stubs. What I like about the school article guidelines is the part about avoiding stubs — I genuinely think it is unfair to create a stub and expect others to do it for you, I know this is a collaborative project, but at least the creator of an article should put some effort into it, my emphasis to any articles I make is to ensure it is a Start or a C minimum. Some of the school articles I had moved to draftspace have not been edited, it's like the creator has just abandoned it and looks like their only aim was to get a school listed on Wikipedia.
I have noticed the sudden influx of school articles at AfD and it is disruptive, even though a discussion was initiated on one of the users talk pages, seems they have ignored it. Should a discussion at ANI be initiated? Also would it be a good idea to start redirecting problematic high school articles to their locality with the R from school template? I've been overhauling the WP:WPSCH pages which I hope you, John, ClemRutter like it, also I have created a new Recognized content subpage which is embedded on the main project page and updated by bot — far better than manual updating and there are more school articles than what was listed before, such as 300+ DYK's (the manual one had around 80). I must note all of these articles listed have the WikiProject Schools template on their talk, one issue I've noticed is the University of the South Pacific Solomon Islands that should not have this template - I'm not sure why an editor had redirected this which had sourcing and appeared in DYK to its main university article that is unsourced and none of the content was merged across? I'm going to undo this as it is an unexplained redirect and changed the schools template to the university one (the next bot update should remove this article from the list).
