WikiProject Illinois Post Census Report
Yeah, so this is a bit sooner than I projected, but the notice is pulled today. I am gonna buzz on my way, more deliveries to make! :)
The WikiProject Illinois Newsletter (Beta) "Post Census Report" Vol. I, No. 1, Issue 1, October 2007 If you would like to delete this message, the original is at Wikipedia:WikiProject Illinois/Newsletter/Post Census Report | |
On October 4, 2007 WikiProject Illinois embarked on a membership census. The census was the project's first since its establishment on September 24, 2005. Due to the nature of the wiki, and the two years that had passed, it seemed likely that many of the project's older members were no longer active. The project page had grown stagnant and the census provided an opportunity to see who was still around, slaving away in their own corner of the encylopedia, unknown to the rest of the Illinois editing world. Well, now, the tabulation is complete, and after a notice at the Community Portal, we have gained a couple new members amongst the cluster of project veterans who returned to sign up. Of the 55 members listed on the project membership list on October 4, 26 editors returned to the list to "resign up," thus, confirming their current activity within project areas. If you received this message, you were one of those editors. The List of Participants has now been updated to reflect the results of this membership survey, with members who failed to respond highlighted as "inactive." Now, as a group of editors, we have a core list of individuals, that will hopefully grow in size as the project strives to become a better organized central collaboration space for editors working on Illinois related topics.
The big question, where does the project go from here? Well there are a few proposals being floated at this project page. Little discussion has occurred thus far, and participation would be key to all of them. Some ideas include:

Sorry Kranar
Sorry buddy, Wikipedia has become too stressful and I can no longer deal with the morons on here. I have retired. I will keep in touch via AIM. Good luck with the Illinois project, the Black Hawk War, Il NRHP, and onward ho! IvoShandor 19:09, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
Illinois NRHP update
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you -- I almost forgot about it. Anyway, I've rerun the script and the output is at User:Elkman/Cook County NRHP. The counties aren't included, and the output is ordered by city. Cook County isn't included. Let me know if this works out for you, or if you want any more updates. Thanks. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 16:24, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry again; I think I lost your request in the shuffle. I've made the requested changes in the report and the output is in the same place as before. Again, let me know if you need any further help with this. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 01:55, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Sorry
I did not want to drive IvoShandor and if I were allowed to post on his talk page I would try to make him understand that. There is no reason on earth for me to want to do that. I do not quite understand what has happened or what I did to have such a drastic effect. Truly, my comment about forfers was meant to be half joking and I did not mean to be hurtful. Now I know not to fiddle with hooks and such so I will not be entering anything on the DYK except possible my own self noms. Even that no longer is fun now. Please accept my heartfelt apologies. I know that Wikipedia can be a mean place as I have experienced that side of things too, and I do not want to cause those feeling in someone else. Sincerely, --Mattisse 21:12, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Illinois NHLs
Thanks for noticing my work on the Illinois NHLs. I was working to complete out List of National Historic Landmarks in Illinois, while you mentioned see the new articles come up in some other way. Have you visited that list/table? It could use some editing, especially in the descriptions for each site. I have run out of steam for improving it, for now at least. It is complete however in that it links to an article for each of the 83 NHLs in the state, after I went through and completed at least a stub article for each site that did not have one. There are a few red links remaining for Illinois state historic sites, a cross-reference list provided at bottom of the article, too. Also, the date column in the table currently reports Year of NRHP listing, when it should be replaced by Month-day-year of NHL designation. You suggest that I give importance ratings to the articles. I knew to give the overall list article High importance; otherwise I am not clear on what importance is appropriate. The NHLs are objectively more important than other NRHP sites, of course, but I don't know what gradations in importance level are available and appropriate for these. Any guidance on that would be appreciated. doncram 21:37, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Campbell's Island
Thank's for your query. I think Campbell's Island, Illinois is just fine if that is the normal style for an unincorporated community (as opposed to a legally incoporated municipality). The island is unincorporated and, apparently, quite fierce in its defence of that status.
On a totally different issue, Old Kaskaskia Village and Grand Village of the Illinois are two different titles for the same archeological site. The site is closed to the public, which has allowed two separate names - a federal name and a state name - to become embedded in Internet discourse. If one liooks for the site on a popular search engine, one can find references to both names. (If the site was open to the public, the name used by its hosts would come to dominate.)
I have left comments at the talk page of Old Kaskaskia Village to encourage consolidation of that article into Grand Village of the Illinois, based on (a) the GVI name makes it clear that ancestors several different bands of the Illinois Confederacy once leved there, not just the Kaskaskia; (b) GVI is the name used by the state of Illinois, the owner of the site, and possible future host; and (c) the name Old Kaskaskia Village leads to confusion with Kaskaskia, Illinois. But you may have a different opinion on the subject and I have seen your work enough to know that your views deserve respect.
After the breakup of the Illini Confederacy, many members of the Kaskaskia band moved during historic times from the upper Illinois valley to the Mississippi Valley 300 miles south, leading to the confusion.Bigturtle 22:52, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

FA and GA value
I guess I was just looking at the articles from a purely High/Med/Low perspective. The Assessment scale and the Importance scale make no mention of each other, so my belief is that even if an article is an FA or GA, it should have no bearing on its importance. However, I leaned towards High for the FAs and GAs if I was unsure. I was even more cautious when reassessing an article as a Low. I was doubly cautious when changing an Illinois assessment, but of course I will defer to your judgement on those. I thought at least a few were mis-assessed. Speciate 17:28, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- Quality and importance scales are totally independent. Museum Campus is a stub and properly assessed at high/stub. Similarly, Ronald Reagan is properly assessed at FA/low for Chicago. They should be assessed independently.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 22:57, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- That is fine for the Chicago project, which tagged the article of everyone who has set foot in Chicago. The Illinois Project believes that in order to maintain the highest level of quality for articles that have received outside quality assessments an importance assessment needs to be tied to the quality. This is so other Illinois editors can determine whether the article needs to be attentively watched to revert actions detrimental to its quality. Stubs don't need the same kind of attention, because subtle vandalism is very difficult. Please don't change IL project assessments, if that is indeed what this thread is an indication of. IvoShandor 00:08, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
- It was a bit, but it was more due to the fact with how we rate our "Importance" in there, Low, Mid, High, Top. Most projects have a vote on what is "Top" where as we don't, its just pretty much common sense. But then, how important is a GA page to the Illinois project? In almsot all cases it is Mid-High. FAs are Top in most cases, with High being the lowest imo.--Kranar drogin 00:21, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Illinois NRHP update again
I've uploaded a new version of the Illinois NRHP report; it's at User:Elkman/Illinois2. I included county-level header lines, since otherwise it wouldn't have been clear to the reader why the cities weren't listed alphabetically. - Honestly, I have to say I like the old map better, the new font better, the new layout better, but the old stats better. In all I have trouble giving up the detail on the map. Unless there is a consensus across other states to omit the local land mass detail, I would like to keep it somehow. I am not sure how necessary the demographic breakout is, but there is no need to get rid of the data. I won't be on WP much this week. My mom arrives at O'Hare International Airport in 9 hours. I am about to hit the sack. I may not have much time over the next week, but I would suggest not to make too many of these changes because I definitely like the old maps. SatyrBot - Illinois importance
I've run the bot through the four "special" categories. I'll run it on the rest in the next couple days. I haven't checked all of them, but you can see the bot's activity on this log. Let me know if that looks good. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 16:13, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, Kranar! I think I've hit all the articles that have {{WikiProject Illinois}} on them. I've added the importance specified for the "special" categories, then added " |importance=Low" to the rest. You can see the (tons and tons of) changes on these pages:
There are some duplicate sections in those logs where the last line of a section says "Error writing to..." - that's an error I've fixed in the bot's programming. Not that you care a whole lot, but just thought I'd explain why there seem to be duplicates. Another error is that many of the ones that say "did not add importance" it really did - example [1] from Log 3. I don't know why the bot believes it didn't add it, when it did. Oh well!
Anyway, let me know if you have any questions! -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 22:21, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi Kranar - I'm sorry I "self-promoted." I don't expect you to believe me, but I honestly didn't know what the terms meant on the Illinois project page, and I just went with instincts, and obviously I was setting the bar to high. But I do hope you will reconsider your opinion that the Wikipedia article should be deleted. I was encouraged by some colleagues to assemble the information and compose a Wikipedia article from the bits and pieces that were made available to me, and I tried to do so and to cite everything appropriately. I can assure you that everything is accurate, but perhaps it needs to be edited if some of it has been overstated in your view. I'd be grateful to hear from you further. I'm quite enjoying New Zealand, by the way. Cheers, Forrestergaz 4 November 2007 —Preceding comment was added at 00:47, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Geoboxes
Hi, sorry for replying but now. I 've been rather busy recently (and having a bit of wiki break too). I've added my commennts on the Illinois Settlement bot to its talk page. As of the Geobox for racetracks, here's my version: User:Caroig/RaceTrack, with a few comments. There are just a few fields I'd place elsewhere, but that's just my view, no must. – Caroig (talk) 18:04, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
- There are major problems with changing this template. This template affects all motorsport circuits in the world. The template was created from several different templates from the various motorsport WikiProjects. It was discussed at WikiProject Motorsport since that WikiProject oversees all forms of motorsport. Geobox categories
I've reenabled the auto categorization again taking into account some of the objections raised against it. There's a more detailed description how it behaves at Template talk:Geobox#News as of 2007-11-11. As of Illinois and settlements it puts them all into categories based on the category field. See Category:Settlements in Illinois with geodata. It can be set up to create just one category, as you deem more useful. After all Illinois settlements have been geoboxed, these categories might be changed into just Category:Villages in Illinois or anything like that. There's probably no need to add similar categories manually (such as Category:Villages in Illinois). If you wish to change anything, just update Template:Geobox category/settlement/Illinois, I haven't checked what categoies the Illinois settlements are put into, so you might want to add them to this template (or write me what tehy are and I update it myself), as of now it aonly recognizes category Village, all other are put into Category:Settlements in Illinois with geodata. The existing artciles will be put into those categories after the Wiki software purges their cache, this can be speed up by saving those pages manually. – – Caroig (talk) 16:37, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Re: Template:WikiProject Illinois
I was the admin who protected the template because it is a high-use, high-risk template. Any changes should first be made in a template sandbox or subpage somewhere so that they can be tested before updating the high-use template (and possibly breaking many, many pages). I can say that, to my knowledge, there is no Featured list-Class, however, it's entirely up to the WikiProject to decide which classes to use. When new, tested code is ready to be implemented, a {{editprotected}} tag can be used on the talk page to alert admins. Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 19:18, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Ivoshandor
I know you have worked with Ivoshandor on a couple project and curious if you knew where they went? Their userpage has been deleted. Thanks. Stangboy7 (talk) 05:22, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
Township maps
Greetings! I have recently created township maps for all of the Indiana townships. I saw that you produced the maps for at least some of the Illinois townships (such as in Vermilion County), and wanted to let you know that I've linked one of my new maps to the Blount Township, Vermilion County, Illinois article. I just thought I'd let you know so you can take a look, as I don't want to step on any toes; the existing maps are great. The new ones, however, provide some additional location cues (incorporated settlements and major roads) and also show portions of neighboring counties for extra context. In addition, they're SVGs (which scale better than PNGs). Omnedon (talk) 07:05, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
Hey
I hope we haven't lost you. I have been talking with the city and the landmark website is suppose to be updated in January. You may notice it has no City Landmarks since mid 2003. Many have been added including the likes of Wrigley Field and teh Marshall Fields Building. We are going to have some work to do on List of Chicago Landmarks when the new info is posted.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 03:38, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Category:Top-importance Chicago articles
We are going to go through another round of consideration for Category:Top-importance Chicago articles. Last August your votes helped us decide our last round of promotions. Please consider the articles at WT:CHIASSESS and voice your opinion on whether they should be on the ballot near the end of January when we are considering our next round of promotions.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 03:01, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks
Glad to hear from you and thanks for the greetings - when you get a chance, any feedback on {{Black Hawk War Map}} would be appreciated. I have what I believe are all 15 of the battles on the map, as well as a fort and a Native village. I just added the text labels to the battles as red X's by themselves were a bit vaue, hopefully it is not too crowded. I am not sure what forts and villages and towns to add. The southern half of the map looks empty, but Black Hawk's village will be down there eventually. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 05:35, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
Disputed fair use rationale for Image:DL Nexus.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:DL Nexus.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 05:55, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Oh where oh where could my Kranar be . . . . I'm thinking about coming back here, part time to help you, in secret of course. Always in secret, muhahahahaha! Perhaps? 69.137.246.61 (talk) 07:20, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
List of Chicago Landmarks
I am revising List of Chicago Landmarks for new designations since July 2003. You will see many redlinks that need articles if we want to retain WP:FL status. For details of the update that is underway see the talk page. Please help out and create some articles.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 04:49, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
Oscar Stanton De Priest
I noticed that you had previously assessed the article on Oscar Stanton De Priest as stub-class for WikiProject Illinois and WikiProject Chicago. Per my suggestion, WikiProject Biography has recently changed its assessment of the article to Start-class, and I was wondering if it would be appropriate to change the assessments of the other two WikiProject which you had added. --TommyBoy (talk) 19:15, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
Hola
Not editing much, plan to do some work here and there though. I think I would still like to submit photos, probably not as many. I do my historic tours of the countryside anyway, so why not. Anyway, I'll be around here some. IvoShandor (talk) 04:16, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
- Roger that, cool on the photos. The days I am available are about to change, I will let you know, i may be switching and getting weekends off soon. IvoShandor (talk) 11:00, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
- Kranar, I haven't seen anything that references that as a specific style of barn. Any sources? I will pour over what documentation I have on round barns. My guess is they fall into the broad classification "round barn" as early examples, such as that in Shaker country at Hancock, Massachusetts. I will see what I can find. That article needs a little work anyway, it's not very thorough. I wrote it a long time ago. IvoShandor (talk) 08:47, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
