Thanks again @Leoneix, I said about all I had to say in the Teahouse but I just thought I'd acknowledge your post here too. Kilroy Was Here 1856 (talk) 20:27, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Another welcome

[edit]

Welcome, Kilroy Was Here 1856. I saw your question in the Teahouse. There's a lot to learn about editing Wikipedia. There are also many people willing to help, and quite a lot of information in various places. You mentioned being concerned with breaking rules you don't know about: here's a list of policies and guidelines with links to more information.

There are all sorts of things you can do to help. One easy way to get started is by looking for typos and fixing them. (Just be sure that they are typos rather than a different variety of English; avoid changing British spelling to American, or vice versa.) If you're interested in working with other people in a particular subject area, look at the WikiProjects to see if there's one you like. I hope you enjoy your time here. Thanks @BlackcurrantTea, that list of policies and guidelines definitely helps. I feel a lot less in the dark now. And it's nice to have everything there in one place, I kept on clicking from one page to another and it kind of felt like Russian nesting dolls of rules, they just kept going seemingly without end. Or maybe a better analogy is Lucy on the chocolate packaging line! Even though I might not need everything there right aaway it makes me feel a lot more comfortable having that page.
I know about the different flavours of English, I'm American but love British media, I swap back and forth between both American and British spellings unconsciously. I know enough not to edit a good British spelling into an American one and vice versa.
That WikiProjects link is very interesting, I'll have to poke around more on that page. Kilroy Was Here 1856 (talk) 20:34, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Glad the list helped. I think of navigating pages like those as similar to exploring a densely populated city with diverse neighbourhoods; it takes time to learn one's way around, and there are many things to discover along the way. Luckily, the landmarks become more familiar, and there's always a free ride home. Cheers, BlackcurrantTea (talk) 23:00, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
