Welcome

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Take a look at the welcome page. To stay in Wikipedia, an article has to be about something notable, that is, of general interest. Click on Notability for an explanation of what that means. Also, it must give independently verifiable sources. Articles that don't meet these requirements are likely to be deleted.

Proposed deletion of Gamli Garður

[edit]

The article Gamli Garður has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

there is no indication that this dormitory is notable - see List of Bad Article Ideas #4.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. JohnCD (talk) 19:34, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but you removed a speedy deletion tag from a page you have created yourself. If you do not believe the page should be deleted, you can place a {{hangon}} tag on the page, under the existing speedy deletion tag (please do not remove the speedy deletion tag), and make your case on the page's talk page. Administrators will look at your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. Thank you. –túrianpatois 19:49, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to be unwelcoming

[edit]

I am sorry to be so unwelcoming - your article is well-prepared and laid out and much better than most first articles from new authors; but it has two serious problems:

  • Wikipedia cannot accept text copied from other websites without the appropriate copyright release, described in the notice above, which is more than just "permission to reproduce";
  • The subject of your article does not appear to be notable, a Wikipedia term explained in the guideline on Notability. Although it has more space than a paper encyclopedia, Wikipedia does not accept articles about every thing, person, building... that exists, and notability, defined as having "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject" is how we decide what to admit. Just being in a listing of dormitories is not significant coverage. So many students have tried to input articles about their non-notable dormitories that the subject appears as No. 4 in the List of Bad Article Ideas.

I hope you will not be discouraged, and will continue to contribute: the links in the Welcome paragraph above will tell you more about contributing. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 19:57, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
