I have been here for a while and want to improve myself. Though I try my best to do the right thing, I may do something wrong. As you have seen me work, can you please leave me a review as I want to know where I stand so far and what should I improve to be a good editor. Your opinion has always been valuable and your review can help. Thanks :) Yasht101 08:20, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Yasht101!
I think that my advice remains the same. Forget about becoming an administrator (or anything political on WP) and focus on your studies, independent thinking and writing, and fun.
Wikipedia is a distraction from real life. Editing can be relaxing for editors who can write articles off the top of their heads, but otherwise editors have better things to do.

Kiefer, nice post on my page. NOT.

Malleus is permitted to vote on AFD's per | Arbomm's decision Nothing else. There's no mis-understanding. Perhaps it's you that need to re-read that decision, so here you go:

Malleus Fatuorum topic banned

4) Malleus Fatuorum (talk · contribs) is indefinitely topic banned from any page whose prefix begins with Wikipedia talk:Requests for Adminship. This remedy explicitly does not prevent him from !voting on RFA's; however, should his contributions to a specific request for adminship become disruptive, any uninvolved admin may ban him from further participation in that specific RFA.

Somebody else shall have to help you with your misunderstanding of plain English and lack of curiosity about what I wrote on your page.
Your tutor may consider helping you with Elen of the Roads's first commentary on Malleus and the Civility fiasco (from which her savvy and pizzaz were missed), after another "user" had similar problems reading the ArbCom decision, which was bad enough without compound misreadings.

Could you continue your discussion somewhere other than the talk page of an inactive user? Nobody Ent 23:13, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Nobody Ent!
There are thousands of inactive editors (at least one of which is not associated with the Malleus account), so continuing the discussion on Malleus's talk page continues it somewhere other than on the talk page of an inactive user.
Malleus is fed up with Wikipedia's treatment of him. In the past when I have objected to mistreatment of him, he has not scolded me, even on his talk page. I have no reason to assume that he would object to my discussion, and Malleus knows that I respect his wishes when they are expressed.
Sincerely,  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 16:24, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

This was outside the spirit of the non-interaction, no comments wossname! And you know it was! You bad person, you! If all you'd said was "halfwits", it would have been within it. As I've occasionally whinged on IRC myself, of course, that would have to include me ... but heh! So what? Pesky (talk) 08:14, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

I've tweaked that, in everyone's best interests. Pesky (talk) 09:25, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Pesky!
You are making a lot of unwarranted inferences. There are demiwits on IRC, even if one forgets about Demiurge1000.
Demiurge1000 should shut his mouth. Period. There is no use talking to him, as I told you before. Shuttle diplomacy is a waste of your time. You are just giving him undeserved attention.
Sincerely,  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 18:45, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
Hugz'n'stuff! I take your point, but I think that the chances are that if you use any (derogatory) word beginning with "demi", it's likely to be seen as unnecessarily inflammatory. And I think that most people with any knowledge of the background would make the same assumption I did. (If I was wholly wrong, then I apologise.) I hope Demiurge hasn't made any comments or derogatory remarks or needled you since I asked him not to. Pesky (talk) 19:25, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Real Life is a bi@tch at the moment; mother is not likely to last much longer (DNR in place, and doctor is unable to predict whether we are looking at weeks or just days left to go), and one of the ponies has just managed to give himself some nasty scrapes on a hind leg. Of course, it would be the pony which kicks like billy-oh (yes, the same one that fractured my skull when he was a baby), and not one of the nice, easy-to-handle ones. Sigh. And I feel lousy, ratty and jumpy. :o( Woke at 3am for two mornings on our alleged weekend off; still the house got blitz-cleaned as a direct result. And my New Forest pony passed its GA. And I've nommed it for FAC ... I shall have to think which thing to polish up to GA next, now. Glutton for punishment! Except that Wikistuff is soothing compared to Real Life. Pesky (talk) 19:25, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Caring for one's mother

I am very sorry to hear about your mother. From my own experience and my sister's, I have concluded that it was a mistake to spend weeks at the hospital trying to be with my mother around the clock, especially the last week after she no longer was able to communicate beyond raising her arm to touch my forehead. With the stress and focus on dying, the memories are too strongly implanted on our memories. It would have been better to visit for a reasonable number of hours. Otherwise, one may consider moving to another country, where one is not constantly reminded of her dying.
I'm sorry about your pony's scrape.  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 09:20, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
Good luck on the FAN! If I have some spare time, I shall try to copy edit a bit. (I do have an allergy to horses, though!) Cheers,  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 10:55, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for the good luck wishes :o) Malleus did its GA wossname, so it doesn't need much in the way of polishing ;P A few minor thingies pointed out so far; nothing soul-destroying. Pesky (talk) 05:58, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
Here's a fing, though ... if you have access to Wiley, JSTOR, any / all of those things, then I haz a super little research task for you! Hunt down and email to me any and every academic paper less than 15 years old, mentioning DNA and Exmoor pony ;P Every darned thing which I don;t already have is behind one paywall or another (that being the only reason I don;t have it!) Pesky (talk) 08:47, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
I shall try to find something. I have been happily spending less time on Wikipedia.  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 09:20, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

I'm glad you're taking the opportunity to enjoy Real Life™ more :o) I emailed one of the top equine DNA researchers at Uppsala (but my email bounced back!); I've sent her a message via Facebook to find out whether she has a new email address. I'm attempting to whet her appetite by pointing her in the direction of ancient-DNA samples from the UK (they haven't analysed UK-mainland samples yet) so that she and her colleagues can write an updated paper including the prehistoric / ancient British pony mtDNA / Y-DNA samples ;P

Pony is recovering fast from his scrapes (if the stupid animal hadn;t kicked out whilst backed up to a fence he wouldn;t have got them in the first place); mother looks as though she is unlikely to last more than another 12-24 hours now. In many ways it will be a blessed relief for her to go; I've just tried to get hold of the District Nursing team for a syringe-pump-driver thingie, as she's not swallowing well enough for me to be able to keep up with pain relief on oral morphine now. I'm very glad that we're nursing her at home through these last days. Pesky (talk) 10:39, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Sorry about your mom's condition. It was impossible for my mom to manage her pain at home. Even at the hospital, which was a leading hospital in that area of the US, she nearly emptied the supply of opiates. My fear was that she would run out of medication during her last hours. The other fear was that anti-euthenasia laws would have prevented continuing opiates after her heart rate decreased beyond a thresh-hold. Luckily, neither happened, although both nearly did. (My mom was at home at the hospital, where she had taught practicals for decades. Her former nursing students and colleagues kept streaming through her room.)  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 10:46, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
It must have been nice for her to have so many familiar faces around her; stressful for you, though, worrying about running out of opiates. My brother came over from the Channel Islands today to see Mummy, and she's had all the "local family" popping in and out of her room, reading to her from Winnie the Pooh (which she's always adored), and some of my grandfather's poetry, and so on. I've been checking on her every hour through the night, constantly expecting that this time when I go upstairs she will have gone. She has diamorphine, midazolam, and a few other bits and pieces in the syringe driver, so is out of pain, anxiety and all else worrisome. It's time I went up and applied another ton of anti-bedsore cream, and turned her again, now. Pesky (talk) 03:43, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Pesky, so sorry about your mum. We went thru it a couple of years ago with my husband's mum. My eldest daughter, who was then in nurse training, took a break from training to nurse her at home, and the district nurses were so good, but we still had the worries and the bedsores and all that stuff. It's so hard. This might sound horrible, but when the final moment comes, if you're there, it's worth everything you had to deal with just to be there. Jean just literally slipped out between us while we held her hands. Incidentally, although you'll need to call the doctor out fairly promptly (the district nurses arrived for a routine evening visit and did it for us) I just didn't have the energy to deal with the undertaker till morning, and they were OK with it. It gave people a chance to say good bye while she was 'sleeping' - not in the mortuary chapel, which are inevitably dreadful places no matter how pretty. I'll light a candle for you. Elen of the Roads (talk) 19:14, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
I lost my mom before Christmas and her mother (who helped raise me while my mom taught) before New Year's the next year. Soured my holiday experience for many years. It's good to be there, I agree, but one should think about what one is doing. It is stressful and you will remember the experience more intensely if you don't get away for a few hours and go for a walk, say.
Both of them died with pneumonia making it very difficult for them to breathe. I don't think anybody should be guilty for not listening 24-hours or 36 hours to their mother or grandmother rasping for breathe. I think that 8 or 12 hours in a hospital is okay. In each of my mother's and grandmother's cases, the rasping stopped the last hour, and they died peacefully---my mother after I and her best friend had dozed off for a few minutes. It was a tremendous relief to me that both died peacefully rather than rasping for air. Of course, Elen is right that we want to be there for our family, in case we can bring them comfort and security as they pass on.
It sounds like you have very good pain management and that you have a wonderful daughter who is a great help. You are vastly more mature than I was, so I think that you find it less stressful than I did with my mother (who died in her 60s). My grandmother's death was natural and painful mainly because it reminded me of my mother's.
I found this Milton poem to be a comfort:
When Faith and Love, which parted from thee never,
Had ripen'd thy just soul to dwell with God,
Meekly thou didst resign this earthy load
Of death, called life, which us from life doth sever.
Thy works, and alms, and all thy good endeavour,
Stay'd not behind, nor in the grave were trod;
But, as Faith pointed with her golden rod,
Follow'd thee up to joy and bliss for ever.
Love led them on; and Faith, who knew them best
Thy handmaids, clad them o'er with purple beams
And azure wings, that up they flew so drest,
And spake the truth of thee in glorious themes
Before the Judge; who thenceforth bid thee rest,
And drink thy fill of pure immortal streams.

"People can't die, along the coast," said Mr. Peggotty, "except when the tide's pretty nigh out. They can't be born, unless it's pretty nigh in - not properly born, till flood. He's a going out with the tide. It's ebb at half-arter three, slack water half an hour. If he lives till it turns, he'll hold his own till past the flood, and go out with the next tide."

I'm not sure if you guys have seen my talk this morning. Thanks so much for your kind thoughts and everything. Mummy did the traditional coastal thing and went out very quietly and peacefully with the tide this morning. We're all glad she's no longer suffering with anything; all the immediate family were able to say their various goodbyes over the past few days. We're waiting at the moment for the doctors to arrive,, and we'll use the same funeral firm that we used for my father (about eighteen months ago). They were very good. Hugz to everyone. Pesky (talk) 07:08, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

I'm sorry about your loss, but of course I am relieved that her passing was peaceful and that you and your family were there to comfort her and each other. Hugs,  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 22:18, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Keifer, just re-read this thread, realised I made a fox pox. I was responding directly to Pesky about how difficult it is to nurse a family member, didn't really take in your comments above. I would not for a second criticise anyone for how they coped/dealt with/didn't deal with etc the death of a loved one, please accept my apologies that it came across that way. Elen of the Roads (talk) 22:26, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
Dear Elen,
I read your comments as offering good-willed advice from your own experiences, and such advice is welcome from any source, but especially from one of my favorite editors.

And all my sowre-sweet dayes
I will lament, and love.

Bah! Orgasm, schmorgasm... some people find BIG LETTERS quite exciting, I'll have you know. Martinevans123 (talk) 07:15, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
Finding source-files for AMS Euler opened KW's eyes to alternative meanings of "LaTeX binaries".
Euler first appeared in Donald Knuth et alia's Concrete Mathematics.
Concrete modern font also appeared in Concrete Mathematics.
I take my fonts very seriously! I spent hours finding Zapf's Euler font back in the day when searching for LaTeX files meant finding a lot of ... interesting image files! My compromise with fidelity to the title page has meant my faithfully recording the capitalization in the BibTeX entry, and letting the style file compromise.
A friend suggested that King Crimson's "Sleepless" sounds like Duran Duran's "Girls on Film". Maybe the uncredited woman climaxing from the New York City Fripperies (multiple times, if I remember "Exposure" and The League) inspired D^2's favorite motif? Didn't Uncle Bonsai have a song about sensitive men caring about "your orgasm"?

Hi Martinevans123!

Do you have access to Sid Smith's book on King Crimson? It would be very helpful (as "the" missing natural reference) for improving DGM further.... The article is now undergoing a very good copy-editing, and you are welcome to make improvements!

Stay away from Wikipedia! ;)
Have fun this summer! What are you reading?  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 19:56, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Hey Kiefer, I missed that. I'm sadly not reading right now, I've been busy on Wikipedia. I'm trying to pick up some books by Jon M. Huntsman, Jr.. Ed Rendell's A Nation of Wussies should be out soon. I want to jump on that as soon as it comes out. I might pick up a russian novel sometime soon, I haven't read one in over a year. May reread The Death of Ivan Ilyich. It's a pretty quick read. I've also got my first full time internship. I'm working 40 hours a week for the city of Windom-all administrative work. Sorry if you found my comment on Malleus' talk page harsh-the whole ordeal is getting on my nerves. Ryan Vesey Review me! 01:16, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
You are reading Russian novels for fun? I was traumatized by a forced march through Dr. Zhivago in high school. The vagaries of the binomial distribution gave the young women numerical superiority, and so the non-liberal democratic vote led to even the males having to read it, rather than the short and sweet Joseph Conrad's Lord Jim. I still have to read my (Ukrainian) Russian-language Gogol. Maybe Dead Souls should be accompanied by Joy Division or NIN?
MN is one of my favorite states, to whose demographics I refer infantile Swedish leftists who want to complain about the U.S. The glacial lakes must have been loved by the 2nd and fourth sons of Småland free-churchers when they arrived dirt poor for free dirt in the 1800s.
Don't worry about your comments. I allow myself to take pleasure in correction from friends and I do try to learn from fair criticism regardless of the source. So you are always welcome to comment, particularly when you are obviously trying to make peace or to ensure fairness.

Kiefer, just don't, ok? --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 18:31, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Point taken.
(An unusual concern with fidelity to stated definitions is an occupational hazard; unusual irritability a character defect or lack of dinner, etc.)
The adverb "intellectually" preceded "corrupted", I believe.
Thanks for the kind note.  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 18:52, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Kiefer, I agree with Sarek. You, Scotty, Kosh, MF, it's all too much drama. Walk the high road with your fancy signature. Kosh just told you to fuck off somewhere and that's not OK--but like a good admin I will turn a deaf ear and pretend nothing happened so we can move along. Before you know it you'll tell him to suck eggs, and then you'll be blocked like World Peace getting a flagrant. How's about a nice cocktail. Some of what I said is a joke. I've never heard of Kosh before today, or I've forgotten about Kosh. I hope I spelled the name correctly. The last time I misremembered an ANI-enthusiast's name, substituting N for C---well that transposition was one of the charges preceding my last block.  Kiefer.Wolfowitz 19:44, 22 May 2012 (UTC) Or was it the one before that? 19:59, 22 May 2012 (UTC) My signature honors a certain high school, The University of Michigan, Sweden and Ukraine. 20:01, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

I retained the blue period in the neo-classical signature, which allows me to restore the "small" environment. If the WMF supports abbreviated commands (e.g. "blu" for blue, default black for box boundaries, etc.), then I could try again. I've removed the long yellow blotches, at least.
