Requested moves

[edit]

You requested page moves for Assyrian and Iranian Azerbaijan at the beginning of September, however not only can I not find a consensus to move or lack thereof, I can find no discussion regarding a page move in either case. Can you point to where either of these page moves have been discussed? -- Francs2000 01:42, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well OK but if anyone complains I'll point them in your direction. -- Francs2000 01:49, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
As a thought though, why not move Assyrian to Assyrian people to make it more in line with other articles on the same genre (ie Cornish people, Welsh people etc). -- Francs2000 02:01, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Assyrian has now been moved to Assyrian people, and the resultant redirect turned into a disambig page. Now you can help with the mammoth task of changing all the links to both pages. -- Francs2000 02:13, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've just disambig'd everything that linked to Assyrians. The next job is to fix all links to Assyrian, however I don't have time as I'm off to bed now. Any help you can give the effort is appreciated. -- Francs2000 03:20, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image removed from Cooktown

[edit]

Dear Hottentot;

Would you please tell me why you removed the photo of the Chinese funeral in the article on Cooktown? People here (in Cooktown) were thrilled when such an interesting old photo was posted on the site. I intend to restore it unless you have a good reason for having it removed.

Thanks,

El Jigüe

[edit]

As you have no doubt noticed by now, El Jigüe does not seem to know the meaning of the word brief. He's been told before to place his additions in other articles, but unfortunately, all that has done has been to cause him to add the material elsewhere in addition to what he keeps adding to the Cuba article. It wouldn't be so bad if had a decent writing style, but frankly he doesn't. I've gotten to the point where I ignore his mega-addition now. I don't have the time to scan it to see if he's made a change to it that might be useful, but I still make the effort when he makes a small change. Unfortunately, he seems to have never learned that often less can be more when it comes to writing. Caerwine 04:12, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The really irritating thing is that the data he keeps adding isn't uninteresting or unencyclopedic, it's that he keeps puting it in the wrong places. I wouldn't mind trying to improve the style of what he adds, if it just weren't in the wrong place. Caerwine 04:30, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yusuf Islam -> Cat Stevens mystery

[edit]

Here is a mystery. The history for the article "Yusuf Islam" has just a single entry, from when you redirected it to point to "Cat Stevens". But there is a long page: [Talk:Yusuf Islam], showing there was once a long page devoted to Yusuf Islam. Do you know what happened? Did someone move the Yusuf Islam page to Cat Stevens, without moving its talk page? -- Geo Swan 12:21, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Unilateral merging: please desist

[edit]

Please do not unilaterally merge articles. Your merge of List of ethnic groups demanding a separate state with List of active autonomist and secessionist movements had no support.--Mais oui! 18:27, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted your change to the same article (a redirect) as I do still not see any consensus building on the talk pages that such a redirect is necessary. The lists do not look the same to me. --MJ(|@|C) 20:29, 4 October 2005 (UTC).[reply]

Again, I revert the change because I see opposition to it and that means there is no consensus. Even better, there are people on your talk page asking you not to. --MJ(|@|C) 20:36, 4 October 2005 (UTC).[reply]

I still see no request for consensus on the talk page. Reverting it again, as there is still a request open not to do it. --MJ(|@|C) 23:49, 4 October 2005 (UTC).[reply]

Hainan

[edit]

You removed a reference to Song's abandonment of China's north to the Jurchen barbarians, saying it 'doesn't doesn't make any sense'. I am not an expert in Chinese history and I'm not sure of your grounds in removing the reference, i.e., whether you are an expert in Chinese history and feel this was factually inaccurate or whether you subscribe to a different view of history.

At any rate, removing this mention basically voided the point of the reference, which was that (1) all but one of the officials involved happened to be in favour of an aggressive policy towards the recapture of the north and were exiled for their views and (2) the building of this 'temple' coincided with a time of foreign territorial designs on China.

Although 'abandonment to the Jurchen's' may be too simplistic a characterisation, I would prefer some mention of the Song policy on northern China to be included. Reference to the exile's views on the Jurchen (Jin) as a reason for exile is explicitly made at the Temple of the Five Officials, so there should be no objection to the factuality of this assertion.

Spoken Wikipedia on History of Russia

[edit]

Hi. I noticed you have moved the Spoken Wikipedia box back down to the bottom of History of Russia "where it should be". I don't know if there is some prior concensus in that area of the Wikipedia, but the Spoken Wikipedia guidelines suggest the box should go at the top of the article. I notice there was discussion on the talk page that, before I replaced two boxes with one, the boxes overlapped the text at the top of the page, but that didn't appear to be a problem (certainly on my browser) when it was only one box. Throup (talk) 05:17, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Heya, why did you remove Image:GWC Herbert Ponting.jpg from Great Wall of China? The image is from 1907 and thus in the public domain. --fvw* 23:57, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The image was scanned from a book that specificially says that the pictures may not be reproduced without permission. The images in the book are copyrighted. --Hottentot
Scans of 2D images that are in the public domain are not considered creative works and do not give a fresh copyright, no matter what the authors of the book claim (see the templates on the image in question). --fvw* 00:02, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I don't need to see the templates, I uploaded the original image, are you sure that it can't be copyrighted? --Hottentot
The templates explain how copyright law works with regard to non-creative recordings of PD material, so they might still be interesting. And yes, I'm sure the pics not copyrighted provided the date of publishing listed on the image page is correct. --fvw* 00:10, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop adding in the raw information for the infoboxes in South Africa and Johannesburg. These articles have had hundreds of edits using the template infoboxes, went through the featured article process with them, and there is a several month long presedence for their use. If you want to get rid of them, you need to discuss it on the talk page first, otherwise those edits will be reverted until you have convinced the rest of the editors of their necessity. Ndebele

[edit]

Thanks for your question - nice to hear from you. No, the two Ndebele groups in South Africa and the Ndebele ("Matabele") people in Zimbabwe have different origins: the South African groups came from kwaZulu in the 1600s while the Zimbabwean Ndebele people migrated in the 1820s. They also speak different (although to a certain extent mutually intelligible) languages and have different cultural identities. That's why I've taken pains to differentiate between them in the work I've been doing over the last couple of weeks. Best wishes, Humansdorpie 13:50, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hottentot. I've gone ahead and moved the pages you requested since it seems they were all to existing redirects, so the impact will be minimal. In the future though you might want to make sure you go through the proper procedure for filing these things. Why have you made these reverts? Was what I wrote wrong? How can you seriousely state that those are the flags and coat of arms of "Nagorno-Karabakh" when they are only the Armenian faction's emblems. How can you say that the Armenian name of nagorno-Karabakh is Լեռնային Ղարաբաղի Հանրապետություն when it's explicitly written Լեռնային Ղարաբաղի Հանրապետություն Արցախ on the coat of arms itself? The right colomn is itself confusing: the facts in it refers only to the unrecognised Republic, but the article and the title of the colomn refer to the region. Baka move

[edit]

Why did you move Baka (nomadic Central African people) to Baka (Pygmy)? As I described in my page move edit description, this defies naming conventions: Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names) says, "[W]e need to temper common usage when the commonly used term is unreasonably misleading or commonly regarded as offensive to one or more groups of people." "Pygmy" is considered a derogatory term by the Baka themselves, so we should not use it in the article title. Secondly, the Baka are too tall to be considered proper pygmies (see article).

The next best solution would be to just use Baka people. Unfortunately, there is another Baka people that lives in the Sudan and Democratic Republic of the Congo. Incidentally, this ethnic group (which you changed in the Baka disambiguation page to "Baka (Bantu group)) are most certainly not Bantu. See this link. I'm going to go ahead and change that instance back.

So, what do we call our Baka from Cameroon, Gabon, CAR, etc.? "Baka (Central African people)" will not work, since a significant number of the other Baka are in DRC, part of Central Africa. Thus, adding one more adjective, we arrive at Baka (nomadic Central African people). I admit this may not be the best name, but the word "pygmy" must go from the title. Please weigh in on this; I'd like to discuss it before taking unilateral action. --BrianSmithson 13:04, 15 November 2005 (UTC) (Edited. Didn't mean to imply I'd mindlessly revert despite your input. I really want to come up with a mutual solution here.BrianSmithson 14:07, 15 November 2005 (UTC))[reply]

I tried to move it to Baka (Pygmy tribe) but the Wiki stopped me. I was thinking we could have the other Baka at Baka (Bantu people). But about the pygmy tribe, what about Baka (Pygmy people). I just thought the title was too long. --Hottentot
Hi. Sorry about that. Feel free to revert all my edits regarding the Baka articles. (You can move the page back to its original title) I was unaware of that information. --Hottentot 22:11, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Hottentot; moving conversation back here to avoid fragmentation. No problem about the moves. I would like your opinion on what a better title might be (I admit that "Baka (nomadic Central African people)" is a bit of a mouthful). Do you like "Baka (forest nomads)"? Or "Baka (nomadic forest people)"? Something different? I admit that using the word "pygmy" would be a lot easier, but according to Peoples of Central Africa and articles such as this, the term "pygmy" is going the way of "negro" as the people it is applied to object to it. Thanks, —BrianSmithson 03:02, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the forest nomads/nomadic forest people title would work, but do the other Baka not live in the forest? --Hottentot 03:05, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Just to throw my 2¢ in on this one...According to this ethnologue article, the Baka being discussed here are not present in large (or any) numbers in either the CAR or the DRC. I would propose that the articles both be named to reflect the location of the majority of each group, i.e., Baka people (Cameroon) and Baka people (Sudan), and then make mention in the disambigs at Baka and Baka people indicating which articles refer to which group, and be sure to mention in the articles themselves that there are members of the ethnic group living elsewhere (as applicable). (A little bit of helpful text on a dab page goes a long ways.) I don't think anyone is going to be running a google or WP search for "Baka (forest nomads)" or any of the other title ideas..."Baka people" seems me more likely, and a well-written dab will direct people to the proper article. Gedächte? TomerTALK 18:14, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Not a bad idea. But they are in Gabon in fairly large numbers (3,200 is a good number for a hunter-gatherer people). Would Baka people (Cameroon and Gabon) be too wordy? —BrianSmithson 22:29, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say "yes", but then again I'm a fan of short article names...that said, technically, as long as the name doesn't go on ridiculously long, articles can be named pretty much whatever we want to, as long as the names fit inside the wikipedia length limit (whatever that might be), and as long as sufficient redirects are also created. Was promoting my site spamming?

[edit]

Hello Hottentot,

I checked my discussion and found a message which, if I understand correctly, withdrew an earlier one, where you seemed to indicate my putting in links to my Turkey site was a form of spamming. Thank you for changing that opinion after reading my User page.

I must confess that I am a bit proud of my site. But I indeed started it as a form of showing a fine country. I had many pictures and was surprised to find that (for as far as I knew) there was no site on the web where pictures were shown in a somewhat structured way. Even the Turkish authorities seem to be slow in promoting their country, they show the usual nice shots of the tourist spots, but few if any pictures of "the whole country".

The site grows, partly because I add older material but mainly because I keep returning. Of course I throw in touristy shots from time to time, but I think overall it presents a valid and sometimes thorough view on many cities that are often overlooked. For example: I recently visited Mush, and even my travel agent never sold a ticket to that city, let alone that pictures can be found on the net. Now there are some.

So I do hope my links will remain in place. And as I indicate on my user page, if people go after those links and start kicking them out, well, that's their Wikipedian right and I won't fight back too much. By that last remark I mean: if I think someone is definitely in the wrong, I may put a link back in. But if I am indeed found guilty of spamming, well, that's too bad.

I write this for two reasons: thanks for withdrawing the first message. But also: did you report me for spamming, and what will that do to me? If you reconsidered it may be nice if you get me taken off a list of possible spammers. If that can't be done I'll just wait and see what happens.

budapest forum on the "Budapest" page

[edit]

Dear Hottentot,

I've tried adding Budapest forum to the Budapest page, and got your message commercial links are not welcome. Budapest forum is NOT a commercial site. It's a free forum to help tourists, expats or anybody else who is interested in Budapest and Hungary. The forum has been started following the example of the French Hongrieforum which is also a non-profit forum that has helped thousands of French speaking people get along in Hungary. Please take a look, Hongrieforum is listed among the exterior links on the French Wikipedia page for Hungary: here under "Forum et informations sur la Hongrie"

I can assure you that people will get more information from my forum than any of the listed exterior links - because there are a bunch of devoted fools like me who spend their time helping strangers for free, looking up information that is only available in Hungarian, translating what's necessary, etc. If you want to know anything about Budapest or Hungary, just come and ask on the forum and you're sure to get an answer in within a couple of days. And nobody's going to charge you anything. We do the same kind of voluntarily work as Wikipedia but in a more personalised fashion - the infos relate to the individuals' questions.

In case you're wondering, Budapest forum contains google ads, which belong to the forum hosting site, I cannot remove them. Try creating your own forum on forumactif and you'll see what I mean. Sorry but since I really don't make any money out of my forum I have no means to pay for my own site. I also have the link of Budapest Resources on my site, for which in exchange Budapest Resources forum is directed to my forum. Nobody is obliged to visit Budapest Resources (although there are a quite a few infos there too) or to ask for any services offered there. You'll excuse me but that site brings me a couple of new visitors every day and since my forum is still very young I cannot afford to detach Budapest Resources lest I shouldn't have any visitors at all. But I'm sure if that one single banner is to your disliking you will not hesitate to remove the Lonelyplanet guide link either as it has very explicit "buy" labelled links on the right too... Honestly I don't think this should be a problem.

I would be very grateful to you if you had a closer look at the forum - it is not a commercial site, it is a non-profit voluntary forum put up mainly to help foreigners and allow them to meet both each other and Hungarians. We've been organising English evenings out (look at threads "meeting in Budapest" or "bowling on Saturday" in the Going out section). Those people were very glad to have found a small English speaking community ready to welcome anybody. (Well ask them if you don't believe me.) And again it's FREE.

If somebody wishes to learn more about Budapest, if somebody wants to come to Budapest, meet people at Budapest than our forum is an ideal place to start off. Just like Hongrieforum for French speaking people.

I put up the link of the forum again, and I would like to ask you to leave it up because I really think that it belongs here.

Thank you very much and hope you'll come and visit our forum. Best regards, Alice

Gimme a few weeks (I've gotta worry more about finishing school than about sourcing stubs...) and I'll dig up some sources. I believe I got the information from either a Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum bulletin or from Current Trends in Linguistics, although it could have even come from Franz Bopp's 1840 work (which is incredibly difficult to get ahold of because the consensus, including in our WP article, is that his conclusions in that work were "wrong", so nobody bothers to study or reprint it), or possibly Linus Brunner's (amazongoogle) somewhat similar work. Factual accuracy dispute templates

[edit]

So you didn't like the icon that I put into those templates? I had the opinion that the "stop hand" should be limited to the NPOV dispute templates.

Cold War

[edit]

What do you mean? The cold war museum is a 501 c3 educational institute. Jimbo said that this URL wopuld be approcopite in cold war related areas.

Thanks

Gary Powers, Jr.

Your web site may be valid as a link in the cold war article, but it certainly isn't valid in the 22 articles you placed it in. Since you are quoting Jimbo in your defence, please link to that quote, or we will be unable to accept your edits as being in good faith.-Mr Adequate 02:51, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reply to question on Cooktown photo

[edit]

Hi! Nice to hear from you! Yes, I followed up on the photo. They offered a low-res scan that could be used on the Wikipedia for ten English pounds (and high quality copy for reference - but not on the Wikipedia for 20). They also informaed me they had two other early historical photos of Cooktown - but I don't know what they illustrate. As I am pensioner I certainly didn't have the money for it so I asked our local Cooktown Historical Society to follow up. They said they would order copies of all 3 photos, but I just rang them now and they said they "have't got around to it yet, but still plan to." In case you are interested - here are the details on the guy (who was very helpful) that I contacted at the Royal Geographical Society:

Justin Hobson Picture Library Manager Picture Library Royal Geographical Society with IBG 1 Kensington Gore London SW7 2AR Tel +44 (0)20 7591 3060 Fax +44 (0)20 7591 3001 email j.hobson@rgs.org website www.rgs.org/images

Please let me know if you think we should follow up further on all this. I remain interested - if broke!

Cheers and best wishes for the Festive Season,

John Hill

Leaving?

[edit]

Hi Hottentot, just noticed, and was sorry to read, your statement on your userpage that you were leaving the project. If so, it would be a pity since your energetic, wide-ranging and invaluable contributions would be sorely missed around here. I hope that after a re-energising break you will return, suitably refreshed- don't let the turkeys get you down! If you do decide not to return, then all the best, and many thanks for your diligence, humour, patience and friendliness- take care, and cheers--cjllw | TALK 04:59, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
