A-class review

[edit]

I would really appreciate your comments on my A-class review request for Charles Scott. Scott was a veteran of three wars, including the Northwest Indian War, and my experience tells me that your comments on that particular period of military history are first-rate. Thanks in advance. Charles Scott

[edit]

Just a note to let you know that Charles Scott (governor), an article you reviewed for MILHIST A-class status, has now been nominated for FA status. Your comments on this nomination would be appreciated. Thanks. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 13:39, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!

Don't know if you're interested, but the naming of the article (which you originated) has come into question. I don't really have an opinion, but I had reverted changes in the text from "Gaspée" to "Gaspee" because it was inconsistent with the title. Tom (North Shoreman) (talk) 00:48, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really care either. If someone has the time and inclination to settle the issue, it seems like it would be easy to do a review of the reliable sources to determine which version gets more usage. —Kevin Myers 18:54, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Joseph Desha and the Northwest Indian War

[edit]

I am trying to expand the article on Kentucky governor Joseph Desha. I have found several sources that mention his service in conflicts with the Indians, starting when he was 15-year-old boy in Tennessee (approximately 1783) on through his formal service in the Northwest Indian War. I can find very little in the way of details, however. I know that two of his brothers were killed in Indian skirmishes, that he served under then-Lieutenant William Henry Harrison beginning in 1794 in "Mad" Anthony Wayne's campaign against the Indians, and that he participated in the Battle of Fallen Timbers, although I don't know in what capacity. It may be that he was of such low rank at this point in his career than there is nothing else notable about his service, but I wondered if you had run across his name in any of your studies of that period or if you knew of any good resources that would give additional details. Thanks as always for sharing your knowledge. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 17:16, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't recall running into his name in those conflicts, but I will look around to see if I find anything. Good luck with the article. —Kevin Myers 18:55, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tecumseh_ante_Harrison.jpeg

[edit]

Hello,

I am currently in the process of working the article Thomas S. Hinde to GA or FA status and in the process choose to use a photograph you posed in 2005 with Tecumseh and William Henry Harrison. One of the peer reviewers recommended that I ask to see if you could complete the Information template. If you have a chance I would greatly appreciate your help, and if you have time I would welcome any comments or suggestions on Thomas S. Hinde.

Thanks.

No problem, I will fill out the info for the image. Good luck with the article. —Kevin Myers 18:52, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)

[edit]

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 17:22, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hugh Waddell and Fort Dobbs

[edit]

Just wanted to thank you for spurring us to action re: Hugh Waddell (general), which I expanded recently. I also created Fort Dobbs (North Carolina), a related article. I'm attempting to secure DYK's for both at the present. Thanks again, and I really enjoy your articles and edits!Cdtew (talk) 16:36, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Happy to help out in a small way, and good luck with the articles. —Kevin Myers 02:49, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Things have certainly progressed since December; I don't know if this is the sort of thing you do, but I would love your feedback over at the FA Review going on right now. If you don't get involved on the reviewing side of FAC, I understand, but would still value any feedback you have, as I respect your work in colonial/revolutionary/early American Wiki articles! Re-classification request

[edit]

Kevin, since your review of Talk:James Hogun, I have added two sources with cites thereto, and have expanded the article. I believe the general lack of sources was what probably prevented you from awarding it B-Class; if so, I would ask that you re-evaluate now that I have added to it; if there was more wrong with it, let me know and I will try and ameliorate. Thanks! Cdtew (talk) 22:15, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

John Hanson Edits

[edit]

Hello Kevin

I am brand-new to working with Wikipedia, and am trying to figure this all out. It's like learning another language!!

I'm guessing you undid all the edits because each one needs a source? Please help, I'm not sure what to do next. I have sources for them but don't want to put them in until I understand how to do it right.

Linda Lindwald (talk) 23:09, 8 March 2013 (UTC)Lindwald, 18:08, 8 March 2013[reply]

Hello Linda, welcome to Wikipedia! Yes, learning Wikipedia can be daunting. A lot of trial and error is involved, to be sure.
I'm glad you are as interested in John Hanson as much as I am. Unfortunately, the source you used, Peter Michael's Remembering John Hanson, cannot be used as a source on Wikipedia because it is a self-published book. Per WP:SELFPUBLISH, such sources are not suitable for use on Wikipedia because these days anyone can get anything published, and we need to have a reasonable standard for determining what is reliable and what is not. Our guideline is called identifying reliable sources. For historical claims, we can only cite sources that have been "vetted by the scholarly community", which generally means "academic and peer-reviewed publications". Unless the scholarly community takes notice of Peter Michael's book, we can take no notice of it on Wikipedia. But don't hold your breath: his portrayal of Hanson's role in the Revolution has long been regarded by academic historians as fringe history and is unlikely to gain any traction with scholars.
If you have any questions, I'm always here to help as best as I can. Cheers! —Kevin Myers 05:23, 9 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Kevin! Thanks for your cheerful answer, its much appreciated. Just to get started I'm adding a few non-Michael cited references, but am still now sure how they will go over. I will wait for your feedback before going along too far. Lindwald (talk) 13:44, 11 March 2013 (UTC) lindwald, 09:44 a.m., 11 march 2013[reply]

indigenous cat name probs

[edit]

Hi Kevin, been a long time since we've traded notes. Foolhardy as I am, I decided to try and get rid of the diacriticals on the Sto:lo and St'at'imc and Nuxalk categories, and the responses in the CfRs I started are all very consterning and miss the point entirely. I think you were around NorthAmNative/IPNA when we debated all these cat names and their import a long time ago; I remember you as a voice of reason in general; see the May 3 and May 4 CFD noticeboards for all those I launched. The inane responses are in at least one case coming from someone who just likes to argue, I think.....would appreciate it if you'd have a look. This all, or partly all, came about from User:Kwami's unilateral change of people and language articles to their most common English usage, and now people want to apply those to cat names even though they're unworkable as such; I'm p'd because these things were done by speedies, but take exhaustive CfRs and RMs to try to correct. The CfR titles vary but they include Squamish, Nuxalk, St'at'imc, Sto:lo and Cree categories.......and the wrong result may wind up serving as a precedent for more bad cat moves.....mistakes get done by speedy, it seems, their corrections get thrown into the mudpit where people who don't even work with the articles the cats are for start fielding new usages, and ignoring existence conventions (kinda spitefully, I might add) pontificate on what they think is right....without knowing the subject matter or understanding the terminology. I came back to write articles and try to make some existing problems fixed; and wind up spending whole days on time-consuming correcting procedures made my people using speedy changes that were ill-advised and undiscussed, and facing off with people who don't care what was discussed and IMO are just around CfDs to be contrary and kibbitz. No wonder people quit Wikipedia.....I may do so again, because of this.....Skookum1 (talk) 03:45, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

User:Phaedriel is much-missed.....someone knowledgeable about aboriginal sensitivities and terminologies who also knows how to soothe contrarian beasts. Not saying that's you, just knowing that her or someone like her is much needed around IPNA these days.....Skookum1 (talk) 03:48, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All the RMs to revert the ethno articles to their endonym forms have been successful.....I'll let you know when and if the guidelines are sandboxed; these have taken up so much valuable wiki-time on nonsense it's a complete WP:CFWT (complete fucking waste of time). Thank you for that. Because my time available for Wikipedia is limited, I must choose my battles carefully. Please review Siege of Dunlap's Station

[edit]

I spent the past few days developing this page, which is the first one like this I have attempted. I tried a few other minor jobs earlier and one was quickly deleted as I grossly violated copyright; hopefully I have learned from that. As I have received zero comments, I am hoping 'no news is good news.' I happened across a talk page that suggested you were the expert, and had first suggested the topic. I am a family historian and my 5GGPa was Martin "Burgett" who signed the request for troops, and was killed a year later. I am not a historian. I am assuming that his involvement would not be significant enough for inclusion. I hope to develop this in my current WeRelate sandbox and Blogspot. I would like for you to at least spend 5 minutes reading the Siege page here, and say it's OK, or not. Comments, corrections and suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance. Bill (talk) 17:29, 14 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm happy that you're working on this and will help when I can. I will take a look at it when I have some time. At first glance, you'll need an introductory paragraph summing up what the article is about. "The siege of Dunlap's Station took place on such a date during the Nortwest Indian War.... It came about because.... The result was ...." See WP:Lede. —Kevin Myers 20:52, 14 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Quotation icon.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Quotation icon.gif. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. Hi Kevin-

When you have a chance, could you take a look at this table. I decided not to make the face and reverse one image since some of the notes were at different horizontal/vertical orientation (that's why some of the face images appear smaller than they actually are). The bottom half (Continental) is just the template for a table. It's in rough form, really just a table and some loose images to be worked in, but I'm curious if you have any thoughts on this so far. Hello from the team at Featured article review!

[edit]

We are preparing to take a closer look at Featured articles promoted in 2004–2010 that may need a review. We started with a script-compiled list of older FAs that have not had a recent formal review. The next step is to prune the list by removing articles that are still actively maintained, up-to-date, and believed to meet current standards. We know that many of you personally maintain articles that you nominated, so we'd appreciate your help in winnowing the list where appropriate.

Please take a look at the sandbox list, check over the FAs listed by your name, and indicate on the sandbox talk page your assessment of their current status. Likewise, if you have taken on the maintenance of any listed FAs that were originally nominated by a departed editor, please indicate their status. BLPs should be given especially careful consideration.

Up for a little historical research?

[edit]

Kevin, are you aware of any detailed resources which could help solidify the fact involving what bird species was Black Hawk named after? Since the Hawks natural range is much farther south of St. Laurence river and Northern Illinois locations where Sac tribes existed back then. Sparrow hawks are too small and not Black. And Black Sparrow hawks are only native to Africa. Its the American Crow species which fits description and natural range best, as today people in Midwest still(Like myself before research) mistakenly call Crows, Black Hawks or big black birds. Here is link to Blackhawk(Sauk leader)talk page containing more details. Look on bottom under Comments, "Name origin/translation" heading. https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Talk:Black_Hawk_(Sauk_leader) Thanks Kevin, for your outstanding accumulating Wikipedia contributions. As NE Illinois tree historian, and one of America's most knowledgeable, intensely involved presently with the modern day Extinction of Fraxinus caused by Emerald Ash Borer, I could not even hope to correctly and patiently research an answer to this important question about said subject. And it looks like you would know that very someone who would.CHICAGOCONCERTMAN (talk) 01:31, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Andrew Lewis.JPG.

This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the image description page states the source and copyright status of the derivative work, it only names the creator of the original work without specifying the status of their copyright over the work.

Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the original image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. Thanks again for your cooperation. Kelly hi! 13:08, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Kevin, just noticed this article has not been on the main page. Was looking it over and noticed the inline referencing was a little light compared to how articles are inlined these days. Not sure if you still have the sources but would be great if you could give this a once-over, fill in some refs and see if anything else needs brushing up...cheers, Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 09:53, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cas. I had forgotten that the article had never been on the main page. I believe I still have access to most of the sources. I'll dig them out when I get some time, especially if there's some chance the article might have its day in the sun at some point. Thanks! —Kevin Myers 06:59, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think there is a really good chance we'll get it on as it's different subject matter to a lot of other stuff. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 09:44, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Whiskey Rebellion

[edit]

On 22 February 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Whiskey Rebellion, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that only two men who participated in the Whiskey Rebellion were convicted of treason, but were later pardoned by President George Washington? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Whiskey Rebellion. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Whiskey Rebellion), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.
