Hello, Kellyzamora and welcome to Wikipedia! It appears you are participating in a class project. If you haven't done so already, we encourage you to go through our training for students. Go through our online training for students

If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Please also read this helpful advice for students.

Before you create an article, make sure you understand what kind of articles are accepted here. Remember: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and while many topics are encyclopedic, some things are not.

Your instructor or professor may wish to set up a course page, and if your class doesn't already have one please tell your instructor about that. It is highly recommended that you place this text: {{Educational assignment}} on the talk page of any articles you are working on as part of your Wikipedia-related course assignment. This will let other editors know this article is a subject of an educational assignment and aid your communication with them.

We hope you like it here and encourage you to stay even after your assignment is finished! Class455fan1 (talk) 22:06, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction

[edit]

Hi, I'm Kelly. I am a junior at Montclair State University studying Child Advocacy & Policy, Social Work, and Gender, Sexuality & Women Studies.

Racialized homonormativity

[edit]

Hi, Kellyzamora. I took a look at your sandbox additions to heteronormativity. Remember what you're trying to accomplish with this section. A reader who is already on the heteronormativity page and has read up to this point needs to understand the basics of how homonormativity can be racialized. Part of the work can also be off-loaded to articles like intersectionality, Racism in the LGBT community, or Homophobia in ethnic minority communities within the text. Linking articles rather than explaining again how intersectionality works can help you focus the section.

When writing wikipedia articles, keep in mind that articles should be neutral. They should not call the reader to action or voice an opinion about a subject. For instance, you cite an author who argues that certain features of The Kids are All Right marginalize certain experiences (among other things). But we can't include statements like "With films that falsely depict gay white couples it would be very rare to find one that depicts a gay couple of color" nor can we use that article to conclude "The media has also allowed for many scenarios to appear “normal”, in that they are white, straight-passing, and barely realistic." That's a really sweeping claim, especially from a single scholar. I also removed your last paragraph as it is best considered a 'call to action'.

Let me know if you need more help. I recommend you take a look at our Editing Wikipedia and Evaluating Wikipedia handouts as they contain some great information on how articles are structured and written. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:47, 19 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
