Arrival of Navajo in New Mexico
[edit]You added, and then redacted, a statement to the Rio Grande article that the Navajo arrived about the time of the Spanish. Fascinating, if true -- I had not heard this before and I'm from the area. What's the story there? --Kent G. Budge (talk) 14:03, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Kent G. Budge The Navajo and Apache arrived in NM in the 15th century, a little before the Spanish did. As Athabascans, they likely originally came from the [Yenisei?] River basin in Siberia, then took the usual route into NA just before it got cut off by the sea. They stayed in Canada where some Athabascan tribes still live today, until a small group journeyed here a few centuries ago to become Apache (Comanche-like Athabascans) and Navajo (Pueblo-like Athabascans). They tell a version of this story through oral tradition, with their version of an origin sipapu being "somewhere up north". They are unrelated to the other American tribes which came over thousands of years ago as the Paleoindians. As a Pueblo, I jokingly (although it's true) tell my Navajo friends that "the Dine-tah (Navajo homeland) is Pueblo territory, na?". We taught them to farm; Spanish taught them to ranch. They are very good stewards of the land though; my ancestors just overfarmed and used up all the resources until it was time to pack up.
Alas, I misunderstood the sentence; It was referring to a specific period (Spanish arrival), not about the arrival of peoples in the valley in general, which is why I redacted it. However, I, too, found the fact about the Navajo interesting. Kehkou (talk) 01:22, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
Apparent magnitude
[edit]Hello. I reverted one of your edits on apparent magnitude today.[1] Apparent magnitude does not necessarily have to be on Earth. An example is that from Alpha Centauri, the Sun has a magnitude of about 4th. This is a common error in this article, and has a discussion is on the talk page. It has been reverted many times. Thanks. Itchycoocoo (talk) 07:35, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
Greetings and an invite to join WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America
[edit]Hello Kehkou, I've seen you around for the past several years and wanted to thank you for all your good work for the encyclopedia. Some of our interests overlap and we are both members of WikiProject New Mexico. I don't know if you are already a member of WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America, if not, I would like to invite you to join. To do so, you can simply add your name to the "Participants" list found at one of the tabs near the top of the project page. There's lots to explore on the project pages. If you would like a user box for your user page, this template: {{User WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America}} can be added to your user page, yielding this user box:

All the best to you, and see you around! Thanks again for your good work and happy editing. Netherzone (talk) 14:55, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for the invitation. I have now signed up there as I do frequently edit articles on the pueblos, which hold a special significance to me as I have Cochiti ancestry. I have notice you around too! I probably even sent a "thanks" your way before (I do that often). Thank you again for your work and happy editing to you as well! - Great to "meet" you electronically! I'm interested in improving and/or creating articles on Indigenous artists and artisans, especially notable under-known ones. I'm particularly interested in Pueblo and Navajo, I guess because of the New Mexico connection. I've been looking for a photo of the Cochiti artist Virgil Ortiz for the infobox in his article but have not been successful finding one that is copyright free. His work is so great, and the new time-travelers stuff is mind-blowing. Netherzone (talk) 17:01, 13 February 2025 (UTC)
