Proposed edits to make in Petroleum industry in Canada

[edit]

I think the article has too many headings in the Contents. I'd consider changing the order of some sections as well. Here are some ideas on how we can improve the article by adding information about the transportation of petroleum in Canada, the capacity of transportation, and its impacts:

  • Midstream section: Expand the description to include the applicable pipeline system in Canada
  • Add graphic of transport system - ideally a Canadian example
  • Add Export capacity section: discuss the supply of crude oil and capacity of rail and pipelines. Move the "Getting to tidewater" section here. Discuss tanker ban (deep link to Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines). Consider combining with the "Long-term outlook" section? What about pipeline vs rail debate?
  • Add Impact of crude oil development on Indigenous groups

Consider changing the order of major sections as follows: feedback is welcome!
1. History
2. Upstream, midstream and downstream components of Canadian petroleum industry (rename to "Major sectors")
3. Major players
4. *Needs a new section titled Oil production and reserves with a subsections containing Oil fields of Canada and the Long-term outlook)
5. Export capacity
6. Divisions ??
7. Impact of oil sands development on Aboriginal groups
8. Regulatory agencies in Canada

I checked the size of the current article and it's already > 63kB. The general rule of thumb is to divide the material once it reaches > 60kB (within reason). There is already a good "History of the petroleum industry in Canada" article, so perhaps we could cut this section out. Or what are some other options? New transport article? The oil sands page is fairly comprehensive, but it's missing an important Indigenous component. My inclusion of the section "impact of oil sands development on Indigenous groups" will round out the article in a balanced way. It includes mentions of negative impacts (environmental), but also how the oil sands is a valuable contributor to Indigenous employment, sustainability, and potential for economic opportunities.

Update: I have moved my section to the page "Athabasca oil sands." After chatting with Ian, this page seems more appropriate. I cut out the BC Indigenous concerns (with tanker traffic) and updated it to include strictly Alberta Indigenous concerns. I also changed the title to include 'pipeline and oil sands development.'
