Location map
[edit]Hi Kalan, thanks for your work on the location map template. It seems that this isn't a quick-fix, so can I suggest you use the template sandbox or your user space for developing the 180 degree meridian fix while leaving the float functionality working on the live template. There are hundreds of articles that use the location map template and we really can't risk have their formatting disrupted for hours at a time. Cheers, Waggers 12:54, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Waggers, I see that your version doesn't seem to work (at least I can judge it according to examples given in the template page). Anyway, a bot is required to change decimal degrees to dms, it could also take quoted values of
float
attribute. If there are no quotes, all works OK in my version. — Kalan 13:06, 23 March 2007 (UTC)- Thanks for that, although none of the instances of the template that I've been using seemed to work after your edits to the template and they don't have quotes in the float attributes (see Townhill Park for example). Waggers 13:23, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
- I've solved the problem. The solution was so stupid that I was laughing out loud for several minutes. What about signing, try writing a JavaScript that will show you a notice when no ~~~~ is found in talk page text. — Kalan 13:30, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
- That's great news, well done! Good thinking about the javascript, I'll consider that. Waggers 13:34, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Location map
[edit]I've rolled back your changes since they have caused multiple problems, as noted on Template talk:Location map. Please fix the problems before changing the template again. (Caniago 15:42, 24 March 2007 (UTC))
- Please don't disturb me with editing conflicts, I've found the solution. — Kalan 15:46, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
- The Infobox City template still has problems which you need to fix. Take a look at the label "Location of Pontianak in Indonesia" - it should be below the map, not to the left hand side in your testcase. The top and bottom options are similar to the left and right options - see below for examples:
{{Location map|Smile|position=top|lat=40|long=45|float=right|label=Nose|caption=Nose location on the smiley (svg)|width=150}} position=top {{Location map|Smile2|position=top|lat=40|long=45|float=left|label=Nose|caption=Nose location on the smiley (png)|width=150}} <br clear=all> {{Location map|Smile|position=bottom|lat=40|long=45|float=right|label=Nose|caption=Nose location on the smiley (svg)|width=150}} position=bottom {{Location map|Smile2|position=bottom|lat=40|long=45|float=left|label=Nose|caption=Nose location on the smiley (png)|width=150}} <br clear=all>
(Caniago 18:14, 24 March 2007 (UTC))
The position of "Location of Pontianak in Indonesia" is still broken in your testcase and needs to be fixed. (Caniago 19:19, 24 March 2007 (UTC))
- Tell me what's wrong. The example from the template only has "position" set to bottom. — Kalan 03:44, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- I presume you are using Internet Explorer. It is fine in Internet Explorer, but broken in Mozilla (at least it is in Mozilla 2.0). (Caniago 07:36, 25 March 2007 (UTC))
- No-no-no. I hate Internet Explorer and Mozilla too. My favorite browser is Opera. A problem seems to appear in infobox. — Kalan 07:41, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- I presume you are using Internet Explorer. It is fine in Internet Explorer, but broken in Mozilla (at least it is in Mozilla 2.0). (Caniago 07:36, 25 March 2007 (UTC))
- One last problem which needs to be fixed. The map should be positioned in the center of the Infobox City, but with your version it is positioned on the right hand side in Mozilla. I can post a screenshot if you need it. (Caniago 08:40, 25 March 2007 (UTC))
- The problem is that the float=none option is not working. See the last two testcases I just added to Template:Location_map/Temp (Caniago 08:51, 25 March 2007 (UTC))
- Test it now. — Kalan 09:01, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, seems to work. I undid your changes to Infobox City, since fixing the float=none problem also fixes the map caption problem. (Caniago 09:29, 25 March 2007 (UTC))
- I've rolled back your changes again. The border=none option no longer works, as seen at Template:Infobox_City/Test. (Caniago 10:21, 25 March 2007 (UTC))
- Could you exactly tell me what's wrong and, if possible, show screenshots? The border belongs to the map image. — Kalan 10:45, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- I've rolled back your changes again. The border=none option no longer works, as seen at Template:Infobox_City/Test. (Caniago 10:21, 25 March 2007 (UTC))
- For Infobox City no border should be drawn around the map. The was previously achieved by omitting the border parameter. Your changes have turned on a 1 pixel gray border around all location map images, even if the border=none option is set. You can see it most easily on a map image which has a white background. (Caniago 10:52, 25 March 2007 (UTC))
- As you could see, my version of Infobox City contained border=none that removes that border. If you do not object, I'll revert both templates back. — Kalan 11:07, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Even border=none doesn't work, at least with Mozilla. (Caniago 11:08, 25 March 2007 (UTC))
- border=#F9F9F9? — Kalan 11:10, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- See the Belin infobox at the bottom of Template:Location_map/Temp for a testcase. It should have no border around the map. (Caniago 11:28, 25 March 2007 (UTC))
- Ok, my mistake. Setting border=none does fix this. (Caniago 11:42, 25 March 2007 (UTC))
- Q.e.d. ;) Can I revert it back now? — Kalan 11:44, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- I've already reverted back. (Caniago 11:51, 25 March 2007 (UTC))
- Hufff... — Kalan 12:00, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Orphan editprotected
[edit]Hi, do you think you could clarify what you mean by "ones" on Template talk:Orphan (there, not here)? It looks like your request is fine, but I'm not sure exactly what you want, so I'd prefer that you made it fully clear before I (or another admin) edit the template. Nihiltres(t.l) 12:03, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
- The title contained a <small> tags. I forgot about < and >, so they disappeared and were confusing. Now the request should be clear. — Kalan ? 04:19, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
As i understood you are Russian so...
[edit]Could you please help with the Russian martial arts thing?
I will tell you the problems:
1. Russian martial arts article needs referencing, and i couldn't find thise.
- Hmm... I'm confused by the numbers: 444+618 results. There seems to be nothing reliable enough… — Kalan ? 04:19, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
2. There are articles about martial arts in Russian that need to be translated to English. After translated to English, they also need to be referenced and expanded (the demends on the English Wikipedia are higher). Those articles are: [1], [2], [3].
If you can't do that, then please leave that messege to someone who can help here. Thank you. PocketMoon 17:25, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
- Of course, I can translate these articles, but I'm not familiar with the subject, so it would be better for you if you ask someone other (e.g., Kuban kazak (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)). — Kalan ? 04:19, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, and sorry about that.
[edit]Ah, I see. I didn't realise, because the original had been there for quite a while - I'd thought it was acceptable. It'd been there for some months before I'd needed it. Still, since that's how it rolls... At the very least, I'd like to think that I've helped you guys find another non-free image hiding on Commons, eh?
Cross-posted at Commons:User talk:Putnik#Image:Världsarv.png, and then some.
Again, sorry about the issue, I sincerely had no idea about that. Jame§ugrono 04:47, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit]For the tips! I usually use preview, but it seems I forget to when it counts most. Also, sorry for my disruption of the TOC, but I suck with code and I was just copying it from the main page. As for my sig, which are the unnecessary tags? And I don't dislike Internet Explorer users, just Internet Explorer. :) Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP!☺ 11:34, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- (cross-posted at User talk:Master of Puppets#Some points) No problem, “it’s my nature”. :) Regarding preview — sure, it’s not necessary when writing simple messages, but it’s good for complex wikimarkup. QPreview is a good thing, maybe it will instill the minimum save principle to you; try it! :)
- What about your signature… I’d like to see the default preference set (only userpage and talk link, no formatting), but I suspect that you won’t like it. So here’s my suggestion:
[[User:Master of Puppets|<span style="color:#777">'''M'''aster '''o'''f '''P'''uppets</span>]] [[User talk:Master of Puppets|Call me MoP! :)]]
, that will produce Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :). Much lighter, isn’t it?- — Kalan ? 13:16, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- Wow, looks great and it's half as small. Thanks a ton! :) Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 20:56, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- No problem again. :) By the way, User:Master of Puppets/Sig is pretty vandalisable… — Kalan ? 21:21, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- No... you're pretty vandalisable! :D Childish statements aside, good point. However, most people don't know that it exists and won't know unless they check my contributions. I'll protect it, thanks for the advice! Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 21:28, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- Please remove the linebreak after </noinclude>, because I guess you don't want to break every talkpage you sign on. Also, two more questions:
- In your 500 recent edits, only 36 are marked as minor (most of which have been marked automatically). Is it intentional?
- Do you really like this method of holding conversations, when you post messages on each other's talk page and when it's hard to restore the flow of original discussion (you have to find the matching archives, matching themes, and sort timestamps and indents)?
- — Kalan ? 21:46, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- About the major/minor edits thing; yes, I'd say that's intentional. I usually want people to see what I'm doing. And this method has served me fine up 'til now; haven't received any complaints, at least. Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 22:09, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Wow, quite an improvement! Can you test the code in en_wiki and if all is well, post the parts which would go to protected pages somewhere (your userspace, for example) so I could transfer it to proper locations? Hi!
My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia. I'm chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who make and use Wikipedia have so much to share.
I'm scouring user pages looking for inspiring, motivating and interesting stories of how Wikipedia has affected the lives of people. I'm asking questions like "How has Wikipedia changed your life?", "What's the most interesting story you have about Wikipedia?" and "Has Wikipedia ever surprised you?"
Last year, we used the annual fundraiser as a way to show the world who it is who actually writes Wikipedia. We featured editors from Brazil, Ukraine, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, India, United States and England. This campaign was a huge success, resulting in the most financially successful fundraising campaign ever. It was also a campaign that stayed true to the spirit of Wikipedia, educating the public that this free top-5 website is created by volunteers like you and I.
This year we want to highlight more Russian-language Wikipedia editors, so I am in the process of planning a trip to Russia to interview editors.
If you or someone you know (or have heard about) has been positively affected by Wikipedia, or have something interesting to say about Wikipedia I'd very much like to hear about it!
Please let me know if you're inclined to take part in the Wikipedia Stories Project, or if you know someone else with whom I should speak.
Of course, if you have any questions or concerns, please ask! I will answer as soon as I can. I apologize for any poor translation of this letter, I am using Google-translate. I hope it makes you laugh :)
Thank you for your time,
