Hon. Alberto Tom Ungab
[edit]Alberto Tom Ungab, a man of resilience, was born and raised in Calinan Poblacion. He completed his elementary and high school education at Holy Cross of Calinan College (HCCC) and pursued a degree in Agricultural Engineering at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), where he was an active officer in the UP Corps of Cadets (UP ROTC). Despite a personal tragedy—the ambush and death of his father—he transferred to the University of Mindanao, shifting to Mechanical Engineering while also working part-time as a computer teacher, showcasing his unwavering determination. He began his career in the semiconductor industry as a programmer and, in just two years, was promoted to Electronic Data Processing Manager. Later, he worked as a systems manager for BMW in Saudi Arabia, where he played a crucial role in developing and implementing sales and inventory applications nationwide. Upon returning to the Philippines, he became the Chief of Staff to then Councilor Isidro Ungab while pursuing a Master of Engineering degree as a Department of Science and Technology scholar. He also served as a part-time associate professor at the University of Mindanao. His passion for teaching continued when he moved to Texas, where he taught Physics, Calculus, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology. He earned teaching licenses for Physics, Mathematics, and other sciences from the Texas Education Board, showcasing his unwavering commitment to education and his qualifications for public service roles. Returning to the political arena, he became the Chief of Staff for the Field Office of Congressman Isidro Ungab and was later elected as a congressman in 2016. During his term, he authored and supported several key legislative measures, including: The Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) The Free Irrigation Services Act (Republic Act No. 3601) The Institutionalization of the Balik Scientist Program The National Integrated Cancer Control Program In 2019, he was elected as a city councilor, a position he holds today. As a councilor, he sponsored and co-authored numerous necessary ordinances, including creating several city departments and offices that contributed significantly to public safety, disaster risk reduction, agricultural development, and housing. Notable ordinances include: The creation of the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Division under the City Agriculturist Office The Public Safety and Security Office (PSSO) The Davao City Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) The Davao City Water Resources Office The Peace 911 Center for Peacebuilding and Peace 911 Council The Persons with Disabilities Affairs Center (PDAC) and Council The Davao City Housing Office (DCHO) Co-authoring the City Local Youth Development Office (LYDO) Alberto Tom Ungab has continuously served the public with dedication, balancing his engineering, education, and public service expertise to uplift his community and country.
