Dragostea

[edit]

Feel free to discuss your specific issues with my changes on Talk:Dragostea din tei. I am confident that my rewrite organizes the different facets of the topic in a more organized and consistent fashion, removes some irrelevant items, and improves on many grammatical problems, and generally comes closer to Wikipedia article standards. - Keith D. Tyler [AMA] 21:15, Mar 17, 2005 (UTC)

I would fully love to know exactly who you discussed this with in the chat room, and whether we are talking about the Wikipedia IRC channel or some other place. I am astonished that the grammatically incorrect, awkwardly worded, and POV-laced version was found to be more suitable by a group of experienced Wikipedians. I will bring this issue to Wikipedia:Request for comments. - Keith D. Tyler [AMA] 00:13, Mar 18, 2005 (UTC)

  • Your version included terms such as 'complete rip-off' and short abbreviations, whilst also leaving a large gap following bad formatting. You also removed some information. I don't see how it was POV-laced.
    • That does not justify a revert. And I contend that much of what you consider "removed" is in fact retained in condensed form (instead of mentioned more than once, which is unnecessary). I can only recall a few minor, irrelevant details that I did not retain -- such as the names of other songs that have no relation to this one other than the irrelevant fact that they happened to be above it on the charts.
    • And for the record, my version [1] does not use the phrase "complete rip-off" anywhere; though "rip-off" is used, and is clearly stated as a common opinion rather than a fact. - Keith D. Tyler [AMA] 00:31, Mar 18, 2005 (UTC)

Of course, i'm happy to take it to comments. If your version is deemed to be better there, than that's fine, I just received a consensus that my version was preferred (and complimented). Hedley 00:20, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  • Let's at least move this discussion to Talk:Dragostea Din Tei. - Keith D. Tyler [AMA] 00:36, Mar 18, 2005 (UTC)
    • I'm happy either way. I didn't like the way you rewrote a good article completely, removing things and making some changes which didn't help the article. There are aspects of your version which moved the article forward, but some seemed like backward development, in not just my opinion but in others too. Hedley 00:38, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

It looks like you and User:David 5000 will both be up for an RfC for the "fake article" competition you participated in. See the above link for details. --Calton | Talk 10:16, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  • I've attended to the RfC and have been excused from it by User:Snowspinner as I helped to clean-up the vandalised articles. Hedley 15:53, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Images and media for deletion votes

[edit]
  • I am contacting people who previously helped to vote to delete a generally objectionable photograph by a vote of 88 to 21, and who might be unaware that immediately after that image was voted to be deleted someone posted another which was very similar in content. My objections to this, and the previous image that was voted to be deleted might be based upon reasons far different from any that you have, but I do object to it, and consider the posting of such images to be acts of asinine stupidity, which burdens the project and its major educational aims in ways that they should not be burdened, and can be extremely detrimental to the acceptance and growth of WIkipedia's use and influence. Thus far those who I believe to be in the extreme minority of Wikipedians who would like to include these images, many who have been channeled to the voting page from the article with which it is associated have dominated the voting, 23 to 12 (as of the time that I composed this message). I would like to be somewhat instrumental in shedding a bit more light upon the issue, and if possible, helping to turn the tide against its inclusion. It might also be necessary to begin making an effort to establish an explicit Wikipedia policy against explicite photographic depictions of humans engaged in erotic, auto-erotic, or quasi-erotic activities. To my limited knowledge such images have not been accepted as appropriate anywhere else within this project, and frankly I can agree with those who are casually labeled prudes for opposing their inclusion, that they should not be. Vitally important information that might be unwelcome by some is one thing that should never be deleted, but un-needed images that can eventually prevent or impede many thousands or millions of people from gaining access to the great mass of truly important information that Wikipedia provides is quite another matter. There are vitally important distinctions to be made. Whatever your reasons, or final decisions upon the matter, I am appealing for more input on the voting that is occurring at Wikipedia:Images_and_media_for_deletion. ~ Achilles 01:38, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi. I noticed you've added yourself to Category:Wikipedian musicians. But an article (including a user page) is sorted, by default, using its full name -- in this case User:Hedley; This means you are listed under "U", instead of "H", where you should be. To fix this, change the link to read:

[[Category:Wikipedian musicians|Hedley]]

That tells it to sort on "Hedley" instead. Hope this helps. Ddawson 14:46, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Deleting comments

[edit]

It is never acceptable to delete other people's comments from talk pages, even anonymous ones. The only exception is on your own talk page, and even then flat deletion of comments is discouraged.

Your summary prejudice against anonymous contributions is not supported by policy or convention.

See also Wikipedia:Talk page.

- Keith D. Tyler [AMA] 18:37, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)

  • I was perfectly justified in doing this. The person was basically saying, "Don't say gay, say GLBT." It was close to vandalism. They also edited somebody elses comments. I hardly say that your trolling me is acceptable either. Hedley 19:35, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • That's patent nonsense. He did nothing of the sort. He was answering a question that had been made in the comment. His only "crime" was interrupting the comment, but there's hardly a consensus on that being disallowed. In any case, the solution would have been to move the comment.
    • I find you to be very territorial and revert-happy and would rather delete content than correct it, and I fail to see how that improves anything. Neither the DDT page or its talk page are anyone's territory, we all are supposed to share it and respect others' contributions.
    • I challenge you to provide a reference to any convention or policy that says it is acceptable to delete valid comments on talk pages.
      • It is acceptable to remove comments when they are inappropriate or delibrately disruptive. I was a bit hasty to revert, possibly, and on a second look it wasn't something I should of reverted. However, that said, pointing out that saying 'gay and lesbian' is politically incorrect doesn't, at first glance, appear to be a very useful or appropriate comment. Hedley 21:09, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)
        • That wasn't said, either. The commenter was pointing out that the phrase GLS is dated and that GLBT is currently common. No statement was made that it was wrong or improper. What he said was "it's usual now".
        • Frankly, this isn't the first time you've managed to completely and repeatedly misrepresent someone else's words, including mine, despite the simple ability to look at the words themselves. I'm astonished that you managed to reread ths user's comment just now and yet still claim that something was said when it obviously and clearly was not. - Keith D. Vanilla Ninja

[edit]

Thanks for the feedback on Vanilla Ninja. I did discover them through my being a Eurovision fan. I really loved Club Kung Fu, and thought it was a damn shame that it didn't get to the ESC. Damn Michael Ball and Co.

I've left the second mention of Ms Kivilaan's birth date in for now, but I really don't think it's necessary. In that very paragraph you mention that she was only 15 at the time, so surely it's sufficient to say they found out her true age? All the important info - that she was 15, that the selectors found out her true age, and that she would turn 16 before the Contest - is all still in that paragraph and the one after. Administratorship

[edit]

Please don't make a big deal out of it. That means we agree on somethings and disagree on somethings. When we disagree, it doesn't mean I was offended. I think you are a good user. There seems to be many trolls, disputes, cabals and aliases nowadays. Judging from the votes I think you will become an admin. Please work for harmony. Try to help out in resolving disputes(as an administrator) . If you are an admin, please work for the majority and not try to influence opinion. You can of course vote or express opinon as a user but not enforce it by taking advantage of admin powers. I am confident of course that you will not take unfair advantage of sysop powers. Work to make wiki a fun, great place to contribute (not dispute). Best regards, --Jondel 03:43, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Response

[edit]

Hi Hedley,

I'm a little confused by some of your comments in your message to me - for a start, I am shocked that you are flatly denying the message that you sent me on CoolClarity. Maybe you can't remember the specific text of it as it was sent a couple of months ago, but I have it saved in my account and I can assure you that I did not edit the text at all. I would never ever make something up and claimed that someone else said it. Short of sending you a screenshot of the message I'm not sure what more there is I can do, but I'm very happy to give my account details to a third-party trustable wikipedian to verify the truth.

The main plank of my opposition isn't the events around the whole vandalism saga, I agree that someone shouldn't be judged on their first few edits. The points I gave in my opposition are showing that in my opinion you have certain personality traits that are unsuitable to be an admin.

The one point I am willing to concede is that the talk page comments were not phrased as questions, so I suppose I was not entitled to a response. But I'm not really bothered about people not answering talk pages, there are bigger issues here. What I am most disappointed about is that you are calling me a liar about that message, which I have proof that you sent me. As I said, you may not remember the specific wording, but I have it stored. I'm just sorry that instead of conceding the truth, you chose to attack and again show why you are unsuitable to be an admin. David 5000 14:29, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • I know screenshots can be messed about with, that's why I haven't bothered posting one. However, AFAIK the date and text of private messages on message boards cannot be edited - if they could, then I wouldn't have bothered mentioning it in the first place, as you're right, it wouldn't make very good evidence! Your contributions that I've seen on here have been mostly good, but what I am objecting to is your arrogance, which you are still demonstrating by denying the facts, and 'refusing to speak to me' on your rfa page. Until your very last message to me, there wasn't a hint of admission to the fact that you were wrong about the edits that I mentioned. David 5000 14:52, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Your RfA

[edit]

Hi Hedley. The thing is, this has created enough doubt in my mind that I can no longer in good faith support. I think you would make a good admin, I am just not certain. Relax, though. This is not a slight on you, and adminship is not the end of the world. I am just not completely comfortable at this time, and supporting in this instance would be dishonest. I do not oppose, but I cannot support. smoddy 23:10, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • I just noticed that have withdrawn your RFA. But as smoddy said it is not the end of the world. Think of this as a test run or an evaluation just to identify your weaknesses and what things you need to improve. I mean, if you look at the list of those whose RFA failed, 12 of them were nominated again and were promoted. And the way its going right now, I'll become the 13th. So continue contributing and I would not be surprised if you are nominated on RFA again. Best wishes. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 02:29, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Hi Hedley. I am sorry to have to oppose you – I think you probably would make a good admin. I am just not quite convinced, and so I cannot honestly support. If you were to apply again in a month's time, I would amost certainly support. But I suggest that you really don't worry about this. Adminship is really no big deal, as is so often quoted. You are a good editor, but I am a little concerned about actions of the past, and a little concerned about your eagerness to be an admin. I hope you take this in your stride and apply again in future. Best wishes, smoddy 09:57, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Please refrain from slandering User:David 5000. I suggest that if you ever go up for RfA again, you do not lie about the message you really did send. You might have made it if you hadn't denied the existence of that message and made up several conspiracy theories. Did you said you didn't have access to that forum anymore? Isn't it at all possible that you sent that message and forgot about it amongst the myriad of other messages? Dmn / Դմն 10:02, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • I disagree - being an administrator isn't just about your ability to edit pages. You need to be able to be trusted not to abuse your powers too. Dmn / Դմն 14:28, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Look I think you telling me that my so called "redneck jokes" are stupid, just shows how far down the slippery path of stupidity civilization has gone. Well I know that this was the wrong place to do it, I don't think you should of said anything, because really your opinion about what my cousin did is the least important, I would listen to the peoples pages he vandalized before I would listen to your opinion. Also it's not like you have to tell me I'm blocked anyway I am Zod I know when I'm blocked and when I'm not, so don't think of me being stupid like your kind that I need you to tell me for once again I am Zod. Deletion, Speedies, et al

[edit]

Hi Hedley, welcome to the bucket brigade. Please be more careful about deletion:

  • Jason_Collins, while flagged as a speedy, should not have been. It was real and verifiable content, and should have just gone up on VfD (or better yet, been fixed directly). As it happens, someone (perhaps seeing it in Recentchanges) fixed it up after it was deleted so that it is now a proper stub...
  • When deleting redirects, make sure no other pages link to them. For instance, List of fish on stamps (countries S), etc. are now orphans.
  • Don't delete an article that has a small number of delete votes and some opposition, when you are one of the few delete votes. For instance, see Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/Gebäude -- your reason for deletion was wrong (although all the related articles will likely be deleted). In general be very careful when deleting things you have expressed an opinion about.
Yes, you can certainly close them. Just avoid doing it when it's a 2:1 vote, one of them is yours, and the whole thing hinges on a separate open VfD :-)

Cheers, +sj + 3 July 2005 04:18 (UTC)

Congrats on being an admin. BTW, I extended the block of the block you made to 1 day rather than 1 hour, since that person is particularly persistent. Thanks. Fuzheado | Talk 3 July 2005 03:12 (UTC)

Congratulations

[edit]
Hey user Hedley, congratulations on my behalf as well for being a new administrator!!

As far as User:Isabel Santiago, I want to thank you for the advice but I need to ask, what is an user account?? I really have no idea, I just thought that by having your page you are well, a user. The page came about like this: She is my niece and lives with me, I love her like a daughter. Since I work at wikipedia when she's asleep I tell her about what I do when she sleeps so she can feel proud. She wanted a page about her (lol) and I explained that one needed to be famous to have a page here. Well enough, when she was taped dancing with rapper Lil' Mike for a Nickelodeon video she says Im famous now! Put me at Wikipedia! I have to admit I had no answer to that, specially since she is only seven. Mav adviced me to make her a user page, that way no one can erase it (he said). But I need to know what is an user account.

Thanks for the advice and God bless you!

Your wiki-friend Antonio Misty Martin

Please at least look at the references in the page before you put the article on VfD (or alternatively, google the title). I am a law student and I wrote this page because many prominent alumni of my school work there, and it's as least as prominent as any American firm. 128.122.91.174 3 July 2005 17:44 (UTC)

Adding images to Template:In the news

[edit]

A reminder: whenever you add an image that will appear on the main page, protect the image and tag it with {{mprotected}}. Thanks. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 3 July 2005 20:38 (UTC)

  • Also, consider unprotecting the old image that you removed. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 3 July 2005 20:42 (UTC)

Apparently this article was speedy deleted according to its VfD, yet it is still there. What's going on? --Malathion 4 July 2005 10:41 (UTC)

Is it possible to get it protected against creation? --Malathion 4 July 2005 13:12 (UTC)

Editing the PD template

[edit]

Hi Hedley, thanks for adding the template. I don't know if you saw my response, but I was wondering if you could make an additional edit to the template? I tested it out on my sandbox, and it seemed to fix the text box bleeding problem. Here's a CC of the post I made to WP:AN. Thanks for your help! --Deathphoenix 8 July 2005 18:58 (UTC)

  • Done. Hedley 5 July 2005 21:41 (UTC)
    • Thanks. It didn't seem to fix the problem, though (see this for a page with the bleeding problem). I've looked further into it, and I found out that I had to add "margin: 0 auto". Could you (or someone else) replace the PD template with the code in my userspace (here)? In case you're wondering what I changed, take a look here. Thanks again. --Deathphoenix 6 July 2005 13:51 (UTC)

Hello, Hedley! Congrats on being promoted to an admin! I just wanted to point out that you were Wikipedia's 500th admin, and this achievement is mentioned in the current issue of the Signpost. Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 9 July 2005 18:46 (UTC)

Would you mind explaining why you believed that this article (which you deleted) qualified as "nonsense"? Thanks. —Lifeisunfair 04:31, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the content was:
"ID eNTITY is a manwha about a young boy who is a master of a virtual reality computer game. After his character expired and he needed to renew it (a lengthy process), he decided to use a different character (using an identification card he found on the floor), instead. He then amuses himself by using his new, female character to talk to people with a whole new light. However, the original player wants her character back..."
Not only does it read like nonsense (CSD criteria), but its about the master of a VR computer game who's character expired, and he had to renew it. Isn't that vanity too? If its notable, then recreate freely, but so that it makes sense. Hedley 15:24, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm unconnected to this article’s creation (and entirely unfamiliar with its subject), but it makes perfect sense.
And no, the article is not vanity. As the text plainly states, it describes a manwha (Korean graphic novel), not a real-life person. You might have been unfamiliar with the word "manwha" (as I was, prior to reading the undeletion discussion), but that isn't a valid reason to assume that something is "nonsense."
Without consultation, you deleted a stub pertaining to an internationally published story. I suggest that you immediately undelete it and apologize for your error on the Votes for undeletion page. —Lifeisunfair 19:13, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I was not familiar with the term "manwha". But, it read like nonsense also, and that needs to be addressed. I got the impression it was about a person who plays video games, who had to renew his character, only to have it stolen by somebody else. Now, thats CSD criteria. I'm not sure if the new criteria passed yet, but articles on a notable subject which read nonsensically can be speedied under it. Thats why a speedied it, and even if I was familiar with the term, I may of considered doing so. Hedley 21:02, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The article began with the sentence "ID eNTITY is a manwha about a young boy who is a master of a virtual reality computer game." This was followed by a brief (but presumably accurate) plot summary, the syntax of which was fairly decent. No offense, but the author is not to blame for your false "impression." —Lifeisunfair 21:12, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Did you know?

[edit]
Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article One Night In Bangkok, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently-created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Efed

[edit]

Hello, Hedley. You deleted the article Efed without either a) giving notice, b) leaving a note on the associated talk page, or c) recommending the information be merged. I had to ask on the help desk to find out what had happened to it. I have noticed that you've worked a lot on the e-wrestling article, and this may be why you felt the need to simply delete without warning or correct procedure the efed article (as it was not, of course, 'yours').

Perhaps you should have used the VfD process, instead of arbitrarily deleting a page that a number of people had worked on, with no reason being given. I noticed you didn't even bother to put a redirect from Efed to the e-wrestling article.

It would have been very helpful if you could have gone through the correct ways of deleting an article. I will request that the Efed article be undeleted, in order for any and all salient information on the Efed page to be merged into the e-wrestling page. As an administrator, perhaps you could be more careful with the delete button. Proto t c 09:21, 29 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Hedley, You deleted the changes without giving me notice, because you don't believe the things I've written on my site. Then please tell me, what don't you believe from my site. I'm an unemployed person, that's why I'm a person who worked since march 2005 almost every day on that page to get the informations together, correct mistakes, etc. I can give you some proofs for your distrust, just tell me your distrusts on Lene's discography!!!

You closed the VfD for Admira Ismić and Boško Brkić and deleted the article. I believe that this article was deleted without a clear consensus, and have nominated the article for undeletion. Efed

[edit]

Hey, thanks for undeleting as I asked. When I have time this week, I'll try and merge the two articles together and make one sensible one. Unfortiunately, anon IPs aways seem the need to put their crappy geocities efed with three players at most on there.

I used to play in efeds, but haven't for about two years now, I think I grew out of them. I preferred ones with engines, though, like wrassle.net. Proto t c 08:36, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Closing VfDs

[edit]

A 'Vote for Deletion' is actually somewhat misnamed. It isn't just a matter of which side gets the most votes. The actual policy is that an article can only be deleted if the consensus has decided that it should be: what that amounts to in practice varies, but if numbers come into it, then more than 70% is regarded as consensus. Judgment is required as well: an article should be kept even if the vast majority of votes are to delete it if, in the judgment of the closing admin, the votes are driven by inappropriate considerations (such as distaste for the general subject, POV etc). Likewise, an article can be deleted if the keep votes are being organised to support an inappropriate article, but this needs more careful consideration.
