Space tether

[edit]

Sorry, I don't think what you've done so far is very good.

(Don't undo your restructuring. It may need more work but now the page has accurate information with an appropriate emphasis on what spacetethers are at this present moment in time. I have been studying spacetethers in grad school for two years now. The old version was my first exposure to tethers and my first red herring on the subject. Let's work on making the restructuring work.)Mcternan (talk) 18:17, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Any article in the Wikipedia has to cover the entire topic. That doesn't mean linking out to another article, it means covering the topic.

The problem you have is that (for example) momentum exchange tethers are part of the space tether topic, but you're not covering them, you're only mentioning them. You've also only even mentioned them in the lead, and not in the body. The lead is supposed to be an even more concise version of the topic than the body, but the body doesn't have any mention of them at all. There's other issues as well, you've written the article to more or less imply that the three types of tether are mutually exclusive, whereas they're orthogonal really. There's also severe style issues; as far as I know in Wikipedia we simply don't have a lead that states that most of the topic is covered elsewhere.

(I agree with the "orthogonality" comment by Rememberway)Mcternan (talk) 18:17, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I also don't think that moving the details of the different sorts of rotovators, space elevators, skyhooks and so forth out of the article does the reader any favours at all. These are all proposed types of tethers, without them there's little point in the article for the reader; there needs to be a 'so what'.

So you need to subarticle lots stuff back in, or undo your edits; at the moment, I actually think that undoing it all looks better.

(It might look better but it was inaccurate and misleading. Don't undo! Mcternan (talk) 18:17, 27 June 2011 (UTC))[reply]

You've also majorly screwed up the revision history of the article editing; you're supposed to use the move function to rename articles rather than cut and pasting. That really pisses the admins off because they have to try to unpick it, and their tools to do this apparently kinda suck.Rememberway (talk) 13:25, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm still planning to unsplit the article. Whether or not the material is being taught in grad school is not relevant, we're supposed to be covering the literature in the round. This is not an article about 'things profs cover in grad school', nor is it an article on 'things aerospace companies are working on'. We're more interested in summarising NASA's tether handbook, and summarising every paper ever written on this topic. It's not like the old article was too big, and all you've done anyway is move things around and fail to explain them properly in the main article. -Rememberway (talk) 02:22, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you that the goal here is to cover the entire topic. The difficulty was that there is a lot of information on the topic and having a 50+ page wiki page is not very helpful to the public (no one will read it). So I first reorganized the pages so there was no repetition (there used to be 4 of them each overlapping siginificantly). Since there was so much material, I categorized major sections and put them into a page of their own and labelled them in the heading of the main page where you put a brief description of each (thank you by the way for that insertion). At this point it appeard that everyone expressed satisfaction in the current state of the page.

You definitely have some valid points mentioned above and we should work with that to enhance the page. To address the items you mention above: 1) I understand that everything on this page, including the links that we made to other articles are all orthogonal, that was the original intent, and I believe we spoke of this 3 months ago during the restructuring. 2) As far as the revision history, yes, I apologized for that, but again I explained what I was doing to all parties 3 months ago and everyone was on board. 3) As far as adding some content from the other articles to give more of a taste of tethers, that sounds good. We can probably add a line or two on each major point from all the other sub articles along with another link to the sub-article. Your input in this area is much appreciated.

I am not trying to change the way Wikipedia does things. I am trying to do exactly what you mention... "cover the entire topic". It is also interesting that you mention it, but summarizing NASAs handbook is one of the major goals here. I, along with NASA, other Universities, some private industry, and the previous authors of the Tethers Handbook are in the process of developing the next revision of this document. In addition, each has seen this new wiki page and have expressed appreciation for the page in its current form over what it was. So I can assure you that the major players in the game are happy. Again, the major issue here is length and orginization.
