coaching tree

[edit]

What is the consensus on the "coaching tree" section within coach articles? I know there has been dispute about it within the wikiproject, and you're reverting edits, so I figured I'd ask?--MooseBurgers511 (talk) 18:49, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@MooseBurgers511: Thanks for dropping me a message. The consensus on "coaching tree" sections is that in order to include one, we need to support it with multiple reliable third-party sources that substantively discuss a given coach's tree or legacy of coaching disciples. You can review the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football/Archive 23#Tree littering. Jweiss11 (talk) 02:00, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

January 15, 6pm: Wikimedia NYC celebrates 20 years of Wikipedia

Wikipedia Day is always a big day for Wikimedia NYC. While we cannot meet in person, we still have something special planned. We will begin the event with the debut of a new video celebrating our community. This will be followed by a panel discussion with some of the people you'll see in the video talking about Wikipedia's 20th anniversary, Wikimedia New York City, and the amazing work they do on Wikimedia projects.

The event will be broadcast live via YouTube. Feel free to ask questions for the panel through the chat!

We will also have some NYC wiki trivia you can participate in, with confectionery prizes.

Question regarding a potential article creation and original research

[edit]

Hey Jweiss. I'm asking for your two cents on whether or not a potential article of mine would violate any of Wikipedia's policies on OR. The list-style article would document the transfer of wins since the first recognized intercollegiate football game in 1869. I struggle to explain the concept, so I'll give you an example. In 1869, Rutgers defeated Princeton 6 to 4. A week later, Princeton got revenge and beat Rutgers 8–0, therefore becoming the first winner of winners, or as I call it a "WOW". Princeton lost in 1876 to Yale, and so Yale become the new winner of winners because they defeated Princeton which defeated Rutgers. The title returned to Princeton in 1878 when they defeated Yale, and the new sequence would be Princeton as WOW because they beat Yale which beat Princeton which beat Rutgers (and so on).

This lineage of games continues all the way to the present day and has been held 317 times by 100 different schools, ranging from the most well known programs like your own Michigan Wolverines (who gained the title 8 times) to teams lost to history like the West Coast Army, San Diego Marines, and the Olympic Club... even UTEP won it once from Southern Miss in the 1954 Sun Bowl. Alabama is the current WOW, taking the distinction after beating Auburn in the Iron Bowl.

Now, I could find a primary source for each of the 317 contests to decide a WOW champion, and obviously I could not use the term "WOW" because I created it, but would this still violate OR because the concept is original? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Murphanian777 (talk)

Yes, totally OR. Go write a blog post about it maybe. No-go for Wikipedia! Jweiss11 (talk) 04:56, 6 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Help to start a new project

[edit]

Hello,

I found an article on Fox News that (maybe) mentions your name https://www.foxnews.com/politics/wikipedia-bias-socialism-pages-whitewashed

Is this you? Or is this some one else?

There is also a Jonathan Weiss that is a professor in Colby college

https://www.encyclopedia.com/arts/educational-magazines/weiss-jonathan-m

And a bunch of other Jonathan's M/ Wise out there.

In any case, if it is you (please confirm).....

I agree that there is something wrong with wiki. I have been thinking on how to improve it. However, I am not versed enough in it and I might be missing important details of the problem. Would you have sometime to chat (your talk page is good) about your experience as an editor and what could be done to improve wiki? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 136.167.53.196 (talk) 23:18, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

1959 Michigan team

[edit]
1959 Michigan football team
1959 Michigan football team

Not sure if you noticed, but Michigan football made the Main Page today with the DYK hook "... that when the 1959 Michigan football team (pictured) defeated Ohio State, opposing coach Woody Hayes whirled and hurled pieces of clothing, drawing a comparison to a 'hot stripper'?" (Unfortunately, it got stuck in the Sunday overnight DYK slot, so it's unlikely to garner a lot of page views.) In any event, I have a vague recollection that you mentioned once that your father attended UM in the Noskin years. I hope that he and his fellow late 50s Wolverines can now enjoy a fuller account of the 1959 team. One by one, we are whipping the Michigan team/season articles into shape. Thanks for helping bang out the individual, cited Louisiana Tech articles! I should have the 1990s done later this week, and then all of the decade articles can be either redirected or deleted altogether. I previously did the same for ECU after citing and separating into individual articles, and redirected the decade articles. If you want to AFD them, please feel free. I next plan to finish off season articles for Louisiana and Southern Miss. So much CFB to improve! Patriarca12 (talk) 14:38, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Patriarca12, thanks for the note. I continue to appreciate your consistently excellent work. I plan to AFD the Louisiana Tech decade articles once the individual seasons are complete. Those article titles don't serve much practical purpose as redirects as they are fairly implausible search terms. I've been chipping away at the early Louisiana Tech years. I still have yet to get to 1926 to 1929. Tulane and SMU also need some work breaking up decade articles into improved season articles. Jweiss11 (talk) 23:59, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Problematic category move

[edit]

This was apparently pushed through as a speedy back in June, however it has resulted in hundreds of historical player articles (like George Brown (gridiron football) and Nat Dye) being listed anachronistically under Category:Edmonton Elks players. Compare to what was done for the Washington Football Team, where we have Category:Washington Redskins players and Category:Washington Football Team players (as well as the older Category:Boston Redskins players and Category:Boston Braves (NFL) players). Can anything be done about this? Ejgreen77 (talk) 03:52, 17 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

College football coaches & WWI

Hello, Jweiss11! I've been diffusing Category:American military personnel of World War I into subcategories and have come across several dozen college football coaches that have the category but no mention or reference to any WWI activity. I noticed you were usually the person adding these categories, but unfortunately this was a decade ago or more. Do you remember if you were using a single source for these references (hopefully available online) that I can use to update these articles? Rgrds. --Bison X (talk) 21:31, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bison X, scanning that category, I can see several college football coach articles I have edited, but at a glance I can't tell onto which ones I added the category. Nevertheless, I'm happy to help cite and diffuse these articles. I already did so with Brady Cowell. The body of Bob Higgins (American football) states that he served in World War I, but the branch isn't specified. A quick search on Newspapers.com didn't provide clarity. Feel free to direct me to specific articles you'll like me to tackle. Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 18:24, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wscsuperfan, we reached a consensus last year that these tables were crufty clutter and did a mass deletion of them. But I guess some survived the purge and replicated. See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football/Archive 24#Overall record / Last meeting / Result tables for the discussion. Jweiss11 (talk) 21:14, 7 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dickinson "Red Devils"

[edit]

There are various places where the Dickinson sports programs are referenced as the "Red Devils". This racially offensive nickname was adopted in the 1930s and has been abandoned by the school which now uses the nickname "Blue Hawks" for its sports programs. Cbl62 (talk) 18:21, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I note this here because you created Category:Dickinson Red Devils football seasons. I realize you were following the pattern set in Category:Dickinson Red Devils. This whole series of categories should be renamed. Agreed? Cbl62 (talk) 18:24, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Wait. It looks like the Blue Hawks are from another Dickinson. Is it possible that Dickinson College still uses this racially offensive nickname? Cbl62 (talk) 18:26, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently, the answer is "yes". See here. Cbl62 (talk) 18:27, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
See Urban Dictionary ("Red devil is a racist term used towards Red people aka Indigenous people of the Americas."). See also here. Cbl62 (talk) 19:56, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, Dickinson is still the "Red Devils". Lots of terms have can very different meanings depending on context. South Carolina is often call the "Cocks" (short for Gamecocks), and that word can obviously have a very different meaning! I don't think Dickinson's nickname was ever intended to disparage Native Americans, particularly considering the school's proximity to and long association with the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. As for "Red Devils", it seems Dickinson adopted that nickname in 1930. Before that, they were called the "Red and White". I see usage of the "Red and White" nickname going back to at least 1890: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/85290335/the-news-journal/. Jweiss11 (talk) 02:06, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
"Red Devils" has long been a racial slur for American Indians. See Urban Dictionary ("Red devil is a racist term used towards Red people aka Indigenous people of the Americas."). The proximity to Carlisle Indian School only serves to confirm the intention to my mind. Shocking to me that they still use such an outrageous term as the school mascot. Cbl62 (talk) 12:38, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Red and White

[edit]

Cbl, I see you moved/named the 1908 to 1911 Dickinson articles with "Red and White". Were you planning to move the earlier articles as well or do you think the "Red and White" nickname should start at 1908? Jweiss11 (talk) 22:27, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My quick searches seem to show that "Red and White" was the formal nickname for 1908 to 1911. For earlier years, I found occasional references to "red and white" (the school colors) but not the same sort of coverage suggesting it was a formal nickname. Cbl62 (talk) 06:36, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Swarthmore "Garnet Tide"

[edit]

Another example of a modern nickname being applied retroactively to historic seasons. "Garnet Tide" is a relatively modern name. The historic name in earlier years was "Quakers". I changed it on the 1905 Swarthmore Quakers football team, but there's a ton of work that needs to be done to fix things. Not sure if you want to work on fixing this but I thought I'd check. Cbl62 (talk) 21:45, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I'm happy to help clean this up. Any idea when the switch in names occurred? It's a good idea to note these changes at List of college nickname changes in the United States. Jweiss11 (talk) 22:25, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

[edit]
New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello Jweiss11/Archives,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here. Sent to 827 users. 04:31, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Connecticut State

[edit]

In this diff, you changed "Connecticut State" to "Connecticut". While there might be some issue as to whether the common name in 1920 was "Connecticut State" or "Connecticut Agricultural", it was not commonly referred to simply as "Connecticut". Accordingly, I have reverted your edit. At some point, this should be addressed on the Connecticut season articles as well. Cbl62 (talk) 06:19, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The displayed short name at 1920 Boston University football team should reflect how the Connecticut article is titled. If 1920 Connecticut Aggies football team is not properly titled, then that should be fixed, along with other relevant Connecticut articles. Jweiss11 (talk) 06:24, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Per WP:COMMONNAME, the displayed short name should be the name that was most commonly used at that time. The fact that the relevant Connecticut article is mis-titled does not trump this rule. It simply means that the relevant Connecticut articles also need to be put on the long "To do" list of mis-titled season articles that need to be fixed. Cbl62 (talk) 06:27, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'll leave it as "Connecticut" for now, but this is another one of those schools where the naming needs a closer look, when time permits. Cbl62 (talk) 06:33, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's always better to address to the root issue instead of putting bandaids on it's downstream effects. From the three contemporary newspaper sources we now cited at 1920 Connecticut Aggies football team, it not clear that the common name was "Connecticut State". The Hartford Courant articles called them "Connecticut" and "Connecticut Aggies". Jweiss11 (talk) 06:39, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I did Newspapers.com searches for 1920 and found extensive usage of both "Connecticut State" and "Connecticut Aggies". Examples of the former (including Hartford Courant) include [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. For me, it's not a high enough priority to undertake a thorough year-by-year analysis, but there does appear to be a real issue here. Cbl62 (talk) 06:59, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Regis

[edit]

Can you hold off on editing Regis? I just lost 30 minutes of work due to edit conflict. Cbl62 (talk) 14:33, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've found multiple sources confirming that, starting in 1928, Regis was an "associate member" of the Rocky Mountain Conference. E.g., here and here. Have you encountered anything like this before? Should we shift Regis from indy to RMC? Thoughts? Cbl62 (talk) 15:29, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. Conference membership can be a little fuzzy back in those days, but Regis isn't listed in any of the 1928 RMC standings I've come across. I just added a reference to Template:1928 Rocky Mountain Conference football standings confirming the final standings. I would leave 1928 Regis Rangers football team as an independent. Looks like Western State was the only RMC member they played. Jweiss11 (talk) 16:02, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Cbl, it would be very helpful if you could use the proper cfb link for opponents in new schedule tables that you create, instead of just linking the article for the college. A good place to check for the proper school and fights name of the time is the standings templates you can find on season articles like 1926 college football season. See Template:1926 Nebraska College Athletic Conference football standings, from which you can cut and paste {{cfb link|year=1926|team=Nebraska Wesleyan Coyotes|title=Nebraska Wesleyan}} and similar for South Dakota Mines at Template:1926 South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference football standings. Not also that Loras in 1927 was the "Columbia Duhawks"; see Elmer Layden. Jweiss11 (talk) 17:48, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Montana State

[edit]

There was previously a discussion where the consensus was to rate college football season articles as "mid" importance for the CFB project. Consistent with that consensus, I've rated season articles for Division I FBS Montana State as "mid". You've been changing my ratings on Montana State and downgrading them to "low". Not sure what the logic is behind that, especially since you've been rating far less significant seasons of your own creation as "mid" (e.g., 1953 Shaw, 1897 Wash & Lee, 1955 Howard, 1915 Buffalo, 1955 Eastern Illinois, 1955 Western State). Cbl62 (talk) 07:27, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The consensus at Wikipedia:WikiProject College football/Assessment was to rate I-A/FBS articles as mid by default, FCS as low by default, and to bump up a level for conference champs and two levels for national champs. Montana State was has never been in the FBS. Unclear exactly how we should tier importance for the period before formal classification. Jweiss11 (talk) 14:46, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. That makes sense. Cbl62 (talk) 15:22, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A couple questions

[edit]

I just added 1925 West Tennessee Teachers College (changing from West Tennessee State Normal) in this year. Can you make sure I have titled the page correctly as this name is used until the 1930's. Similarly with Central Tennessee as it did not have an official mascot until the 1930's and was named a teachers college until then as well. Also, Arkansas State changed from First District Aggies to First District A&M Gorillas. Also I saw you changed the University of Tennessee College of Medicine to the Tennessee Docs football team. For that, I thought we were using the school name rather than the school and nickname for the title...can you clarify?....Pvmoutside (talk) 19:23, 4 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Pvmoutside I renamed those articles as 1925 Middle Tennessee Teachers football team and 1925 West Tennessee Teachers football team. That appears to better represent the common usage in contemporary newspapers accounts. As for Tennessee Docs, those articles are titled as 1923 Tennessee Docs football team and the like. When linking to such team articles in schedule and standings tables, the display name needs reflect how the article is titled. Generally, fight names are dropped and just the short name is used for the display. But "Tennessee Docs" is a special case because dropping the Docs would create ambiguity with the Tennessee Volunteers. A similar case is "Cal Aggies", as UC Davis was known from 1922 to 1958. See, for example, 1958 Cal Aggies football team and the articles that link to it. Dropping the Aggies there would create ambiguity with the California Golden Bears. Western Kentucky University

[edit]

My next project is to change Western Kentucky University based on our Wikipedia page...they currently use the current name of the university all the way back to 1913. Our Wikipedia page refers to the school as:

  • Western Kentucky State Normal, 1913-1921
  • Western Kentucky State Normal & Teachers, 1922-1929
  • Western Kentucky State Teachers, 1930-1947

It looks like the mascot "Hilltoppers was used throughout... ~⁓~~

"Western Kentucky" may suffice for the early years, e.g. 1928 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers football team. We need to check what the team was called in contemporary coverage. Do you have a Newspapers.com account? Jweiss11 (talk) 15:42, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Pvmoutside Here's the Newspapers.com page on the wiki library. It should tell you there how to get access. BeanieFan11 (talk) 20:29, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Pvmoutside, yeah, you need to apply for access and then renew annually. You should easily qualify. I've had access though the Wikpedia Library for several years now. Jweiss11 (talk) 23:17, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate the enthusiasm, but your jumping into articles minutes after I create them risks edit conflicts. It's happened many times, and I just lost 10 minutes of work on links at 2011 Whitewater. I've asked before if you can wait at least, say four hours, after I create an article before jumping in. This will help a lot with edit conflicts, which can be very, very frustrating. Replaceable fair use File:Hugo Bezdek.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Hugo Bezdek.png. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. New page

[edit]

Hello! I wanted to reach out to you for some guidance/help on an article I created, for the 2015 Shepherd Rams football team. This was the year they made it to the Nat'l Championship, but it's the first article I've created. Is there any chance I could get you to take a look at it and lend me a hand in making the article better/more credible? I want to make sure I'm doing it correctly. I appreciate any help you can give! Also, I wanted to thank you for updating the 2021 Shepherd Rams football team page. Thanks again! Spf121188 (talk) 19:05, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Spf121188 thanks for reaching out and for your work in the Shepherd articles. As I think you've noticed, I moved your draft of the 2015 Shepherd Rams football team into the mainspace and did some cleanup and improvement. Pay particular attention to using endashes and not hyphens when punctuating won–loss records and scores; see WP:DASH. Also, you want to employ Template:Cfb link when referring to a specific team season, as in the the schedule table. This template will link to the main program article (which may be a redirect), if the specific season article does not yet exist. If an article were to be created for say, 2015 Charleston Golden Eagles football team, use of {{cfb link|year=2015|team=Charleston Golden Eagles|title=Charleston (WV)}} will automatically point to that new article and then a bot will hardcode the link to the new article a few hours later. Any article on Wikipedia should have third-party sources (i.e. source independent from the subject itself0, and this is particularly important on articles for sub-Division I season articles whose notability often comes into question. You can see I added a reference from The Baltimore Sun for the 2015 championship game. References to Shepherd's own resources are good for added detail, but they should used in concert with third-party sources. Also, you want to avoid citing bare URLs and instead format the references substantively using templates like Template:Cite news and Template:Cite web. If you want to continue to build out the 2015 Shepherd article with game-by-game details, the "Game summary" section of an article like 2021 Michigan Wolverines football team is a good model. Let me know if you have any questions about any of this. Jweiss11 (talk) 16:20, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for your help! I'm still learning here and I have watched your edits closely to model from, which has been VERY helpful. If you notice anything I change that isn't up to WP standards, let me know and I'll do the best I can to follow your guidance. Thanks again! Spf121188 (talk) 17:24, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of multiple 1890s-1900s CFB seasons

[edit]

Hello Jweiss11, since you seem to be one of the best editors in CFB topics, and Cbl62 is away, I'll go to you for this: do you think the 1902, 1903, 1904, and 1905 Tusculum Pioneers football team articles are notable? Also, do you agree that the 1893 Maryville Scots football team should be deleted? If so, I'll redirect them to the main page of the program. BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:02, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

BeanieFan11, in cases like these where you have a minor football program playing a season with only one or two games, often against non-college opponents, these would better be served by decade/era articles rather than individual season articles. Time would be well be spent developing the main program articles as well. Jweiss11 (talk) 18:12, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It is true I am away (in South America) but we have the internet here, and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pete Vainowski sucked me back in. Cbl62 (talk) 22:55, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Just curious, why is that removed from the infobox? Seems like pretty useful "at a glance" info. I am not that worried about it either way, just asking the question. Rikster2 (talk) 18:58, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Because it's never been the standard/consensus to include it. It just started leaking in from edits by newbie/flyby-type editors. I'm not opposed to a discussion about adding it to the standard, but implementing it is going to require some thought to do it well. Jweiss11 (talk) 19:12, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox football team assistant coaches

Where does it say that the assistant coaches feature should not be used for the infobox for football teams? MHS1976

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited 1906 Wisconsin Badgers football team, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Western Conference.
