User talk:Jsmathematics
Hello, Jsmathematics. I see you have done very little editing at Wikipedia, and so assume you may be unaware of our term "edit warring" and why we don't tolerate it. Re-inserting the word "slavemaster" at the Thomas Jefferson article is edit warring. Please stop and read Wikipedia:Edit warring. Best wishes, YoPienso (talk) 07:11, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up. Thanks to your comment and that of another user, I was able to learn about the "Talk" area, which seems to allow for productive discussion. I recognize that objectivity and NPOV are major strengths (and requirements) of Wikipedia. I hope other users don't believe I made my edit rashly or to promote a fringe POV. Rather, I continue to find the biography itself a whitewashed portrait of the third US president, hence the purpose of my edit was to restore objectivity and accuracy. I elaborated on the Talk page why the description "landowner and farmer" is not just incomplete but factually incorrect. That said, I recognize that various Wikipedia principles make it virtually impossible to portray Thomas Jefferson accurately. Because the body of mainsteam writing on Jefferson to date, which Wikipedia takes as canon, minimizes his role as a slavemaster, I fear that his WP bio will continue to reflect mythology above accuracy. jsmathematics (talk) 12:03, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
Hang in there
[edit]Jason—again, WELCOME TO WP. I understand your reaction to TJ. I have been stalking around the presidents for quite a while. I feel pretty good about the body of work as a whole. And particularly in an important area like POTUS, we have a nucleus of very serious, well intentioned editors who bring their good faith to these articles. TJ is a tough one for sure. Hang in there Pal and with time I think you will feel a bit better about WP. I hope so—I think you can make a good addition to our efforts. Welcome! Hoppyh (talk) 10:57, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
Your user and talk page design
[edit]Hi Jsmathematics - sorry to bring a "nope, can't do that" message here but you need to fix your user page. The policies re are at WP:Userpages and the pertinent section is [what may I NOT have in my user pages?]. Those clauses essentially mean that a user page must not resemble a project page. A user page that has been designed to look like it is an article about that editor is potentially misleading, and risks being deleted. For the user page re-do, scope for user page plans and designs is wiki-wide (as a look around shows) and editors are invariably generous and helpful about requests . However its worth bearing in mind that elaborate designs with copious social-media style content are generally frowned-upon. Stick to info about you and Wikipedia, and you'll be fine . All the best, Plutonium27 (talk) 14:07, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- Darn, but thanks for letting me know. I was a little lazy and patterned mine after another user I came across. I had seen some VERY different user pages out there, but I didn't know if I had the skill set to replicate. I will definitely get current on the policies and then make big changes by the weekend.
