Your to-do list

[edit]

You might want to move it to your user page User:Jonathan W: That's part of what user pages are for. -- stillnotelf is invisible 02:55, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion, maybe I should. I just thought my to-do list was a bit personal and my User page was supposed to be for the public. Jonathan W 02:57, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the talk page is certainly for the public to leave you messages. If you want it in a more "private" space try creating User:Jonathan W/To do list or something similar; it'll still be wiki but it's unlikely anyone will ever stumble across it. You may want to see Wikipedia:User page. Happy editing, -- stillnotelf is invisible 14:55, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I think I'll just delete the to-do list. I can always write it on paper or something. Jonathan W 15:08, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, hey! I have replied to your post at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Signature, with full info on solving. I hope this all works, and if not just drop me a complaint at my talk page. ;) Good luck! Ian13/talk 18:52, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Trampoline Safety

[edit]

You haven't made any changes to the Trampoline page and the neutrality dispute tag is still on the page. Do you have any plans to change it? If not I will be removing the tag unless I hear from you by next week. Dabbler 16:57, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No offence taken or intended. I just rather, tongue in cheek, wanted to point out that competitive trampoline with all the safety precautions allows people to go far beyond what the low-powered backyard trampolines can offer and do it more safely. I monitor trampoline safety as I have a personal interest in ensuring my kids don't get hurt which is why I was able to bring all those links out of my armoury so quickly. [edit]

Hi, I notice that you've got a set of 'archive' articles up at User:Jonathan W/histJan06 - I like the idea, but I see that the categories are still activated, so the duplicate (and in some cases outdated!) articles are showing up in the regular Wikipedia categories like Category:Dinosaurs. Could I suggest that you deactivate them (by putting a colon before 'Category' in the link)? (see WP:CG, "If you copy an article to your user namespace (for example, as a temporary draft or in response to an edit war) you should decategorize it".) Proposed deletion of A to Z Mysteries

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article A to Z Mysteries, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Tiens!

[edit]

"Tiens!" was commonly used by Hercule Poirot as an epithet (as in "Tiens! Hastings - I, yes, I, Poirot, have been such a fool"), so it's not particularly modern. The online Larousse gives English translations of the epithet "tiens" (from the first person singular of "tenir", not from the posessive "le tien") as various sort of "intensifiers", so

  • As an expression of surprise: "Tiens, Bruno! Que fais-tu ici?" → "What are you doing here, Bruno?");
  • As an insistence: "Tiens, le tonnerre grond" → "Listen, it's thundering", though I reckon that might translate more idiomatically as "Strewth, it's thundering".

In general epithets like this are very hard to translate well; I suppose a very literal translation of "tiens" might be "hold" but that would make no sense at all. Replace with "Strewth!", "Heck!", "Ee by gum!" to taste and you might be getting somewhere Disclaimer - Tiens, mon Français est très pauvre Tonywalton Talk 20:56, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
