Weird little request
Could you scan the lists in the Precambrian sections of Draft:List of the prehistoric life of Norway and Draft:List of the prehistoric life of Russia and remove one asterisk from the entries that don't have any space in their links? That would be a big help. I made a formatting error while preparing these lists and changing them all by hand would be difficult. Abyssal (talk) 02:44, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Abyssal: Done but please note that the Russia page is too big to work with comfortably. I had to turn some scripts off to edit it at all, and my second edit returned a "Wikimedia error" instead of redisplaying the page. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:48, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. The Russia page is definitely getting split before it goes live. Abyssal (talk) 13:53, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

Could you please scan the article Oba Chandler. Thanks.BabbaQ (talk) 15:09, 6 February 2018 (UTC)
- @BabbaQ: Done but neither the AWB software nor I found anything to edit. It's all well written. A couple of references are tagged with {{dead link}} twice, which looks a bit odd. And perhaps "Fifth and 14th Amendment rights" should be "Fifth and Fourteenth" - I expect there's something in the MOS about that. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:30, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

Automated removal of lines containing certain text from drafts in a category
Hey, John. Could you automatedly remove all lines of code containing "sp." "spp." or "informal" from the pages in Category:Abyssal temporary Russia cat? Abyssal (talk) 14:59, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- @Abyssal: Done, also replaced curly quotes with straight quotes. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:25, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick response. Could you do me another somewhat more complex favor when you get the chance? I'm trying to remove the content from this, this, this, and this draft that overlaps with the content in the drafts still found in Category:Abyssal temporary Russia cat. I'm hoping to be left with genera unique to the four listed drafts that don't have species and genera that have species unique to those four drafts even if the genera themselves can also be found in one of the categorized drafts. I think you could accomplish this with the following steps:
- Scan the preceding four drafts for lines that begin with "**" that have an exact duplicate in any of the drafts still within the temporary Russia category, and if one is found, remove the line from which ever of the four "big" drafts that the line was first found in? (This should get rid of shared species).
- Then, if all the lines beginning with "**" were removed from under a line beginning with "*" in the four big drafts, remove those "*" lines from those drafts as well (but keep "*" lines that didn't have "**" lines beneath them before this operation was performed). (This should get rid of genera that were only serving as headings for shared species)
- Lastly, could you perform the same duplicate-removal operation you did for the "**" lines in the four listed drafts but for "*" lines that don't have any "**" lines under them? (This should get rid of shared genera that didn't have species).
- I think this should leave untouched genera unique to the four big lists, the species they contain, as well as any other unique species, even if it is a member of a genus shared between the four lists and the category lists. Is there a flaw in the steps I'm not seeing? Thanks for all the help, John. Abyssal (talk) 16:53, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- I'll have a think, but this is beyond what I can do with AWB; that tool only works on one page at a time. -- John of Reading (talk) 18:13, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- Don't worry about it, I'll take a different approach. Can AWB by any chance scan the links in a list to see if they lead to a non-redirect article and if not, delete that line of code? If it can could you perform that operation on the drafts in the much-smaller-now Category:Abyssal temporary Russia cat? Abyssal (talk) 13:31, 20 February 2018 (UTC)
- @Abyssal: Sorry, I don't think AWB can do that. -- John of Reading (talk) 14:57, 20 February 2018 (UTC)
- Darn. Thanks for your time. I'll run by the bot request page and see if someone there can whip something up. Abyssal (talk) 15:15, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

Thank you very much John of reading
for welcoming me to your collection as it is the appropriate word I can describe as your total observability. I really speak Greek and I have no reason to edit it in another language because I have not yet found solid values for my important and appropriate but also serious edits. I wish you were chosen or selected because I do not know your gender but I'm going to be a man, if it's a mistake I apologize for you, if the bikes chose you for my treatments and my unexpected final dockyards, I wish you good reading and responding. I will try not to forget it and send you as much as possible in English, edits and other stages. Thank you very much for the message and more for choosing to you the bikes. I am Gioannania18220 for the feast and Mihaela for the weekend in a good fight for victory, I will remain Michaella.sxg and so you can send in whatever language you want.

What do you think about bringing COTW back?
Hi John of Reading,
I noticed that you were engaged in collaboration of the week (COTW) events a long time ago. Looks like the cost of coordinating to select articles to focus on might be a main reason to make COTW stop (maybe there were more), though COTW seemed pretty effective in engaging project members working together. I am thinking to create a tool to help recommend articles to WikiProjects. Just wonder what do you think about it? Thank you! Bobo.03 (talk) 18:30, 25 February 2018 (UTC)
- @Bobo.03: No, I was never part of COTW. The "History" page merely turned up on one of my spelling lists in 2012. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:29, 25 February 2018 (UTC)
- Oh, got it. Sorry for the message! Bobo.03 (talk) 01:21, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
Query
Hi John, quick question – you recently asked for your template editor status to be revoked... does that mean you are no longer available to be asked for help with fixing templates, like for example you did in the past at {{Certification Table Entry}}? Richard3120 (talk) 00:35, 22 February 2018 (UTC)
- @Richard3120: No, handing in the "template editor" permission only stops me editing the highest-risk templates. {{Certification Table Entry}} and its sub-templates are only semi-protected, and any established editor can edit them. So, yes, I can still help out there. I suggest you ping me from whichever talk page thread you'd like me to work on. As before, I'd prefer to work on only one issue at a time so that the sandbox edits don't get confused. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:17, 23 February 2018 (UTC)
- Ah OK - I know I and other editors have pestered you about those templates in the past, I just wanted to check if you were still available if necessary, or whether we'd have to find someone else. I'll have to check the German parameters for the template above: I noticed they were playing up before, but I want to test them and see if they'd been fixed before taking things further. Thanks. Could you help me?
You've proven really helpful in performing automated tasks before so I was wondering if you could help me out with one that no one's been able to step up to the plate for. On this page I have a list of coding for images with comments trailing after them. I was wondering if you could remove each of those lines of code across the series of drafts listed on the second section of that page. Abyssal (talk) 02:12, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Abyssal: Interesting! Would I need to check for an exact match of the image name + caption + trailing comment? Or would it be enough to collect just the image names from your page, and remove any lines from the drafts that mention those image names? I think the latter would be easier for me. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:13, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
- Exact match please. Abyssal (talk) 07:26, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Abyssal: Done, I hope. The drafts still have plenty of images that don't look relevant. I spot-checked a few, and they are either not mentioned in your list, or are mentioned with slight differences that prevented an exact match. If you expand your list of "codes" I can run through them again fairly quickly. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:37, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, John, I appreciate it. You did fine: there are definitely images in need of removing that I haven't added to the list yet. I'll get you an updated version after I collect some more unwanted pictures. Abyssal (talk) 17:10, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

Elevator
Hello, John. I have just been clearing out old links that I stored years ago and no longer use, and I came upon a list of IP addresses used by the elevator vandal. I was surprised to see that I created that list in October 2013: it doesn't feel that long ago. Do you know whether that vandal has been active recently, or whether he or she eventually moved on? - @Pelmeen10: The mobile view seems to be ignoring the
width=100%
instruction at the top of Portal:Current events/Sports/Sidebar. I don't know enough about HTML or the mobile view to fix that properly. Changingclass="infobox"

Synchorisation
Curiocité (talk) 11:06, 27 April 2018 (UTC)Dear John,
If synchronisation is about time in common. Synchorisation is about space in common.
You will find more information with this book - Professor Boris Beaude: https://www.amazon.fr/Internet-changer-lespace-soci%C3%A9t%C3%A9-contemporaines/dp/2916571698

Subpages
I am wondering how did you make pages such as User:John of Reading/Cabinet of curiosities,User:John of Reading/Reusable messages, and User:John of Reading/CSD log — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nikospatras (talk • contribs) 17:14, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Nikospatras: One way to do this is to type the exact page name into the search box at the top right, eg
User:Nikospatras/My page about saucepans
or whatever. The search will fail, of course, but you'll be given a box with an option to start a new page with that name. There's a bit more detail at Wikipedia:User pages#Terminology and page locations. I could have created the CSD log that way as well, but in fact that one was created automatically by an optional tool called "Twinkle". -- John of Reading (talk) 20:32, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

Dear Sir , I need an urgent help regarding Wikipedia article at Dalit Panther Page , i am Founder President of Dalit Panther of India Movement official website www.dalitpanther.com and is leader of the movement and is clearly mentioned at Wikipedia article , but some unsocial Elements who is doing edits removing my name from the Wikipedia page , they also deleted my created official page , pl guide me , do I have to take any action on this officially ? - Dalit Panthers (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
- I don't see any "unsocial elements" at work. Your edits at Dalit Panthers were removed by an automated software robot, which sometimes makes mistakes. I see that you have put back the "Leader", and I have added the website address. As explained at the Help Desk in April, your biography was deleted after this discussion. I am not a Wikipedia administrator and cannot see the deleted article. I recommend that you do not try to promote yourself or your party at Wikipedia, as this rarely works out well. I've left you some standard advice on your talk page. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:46, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
I need to understand
Hello! So, I saw that you cancelled my modification on the TFH disambiguation page. More precisely, you cancelled the fact that I added the "Them's Fightin' Herds" page in this disambiguation page by saying there's nothing that can prove it is commonly abbreviated to TFH. And that's what I don't understand, because the proof is basically in the title, like all the other articles that are on this disambiguation page. Simply look at the title, and more precisely the capital letters: TFH. And that's why I added it on the disambiguation page. So maybe you have a reason, but I need to know that, I need to understand. Thank you for reading and I'm waiting your reply. FlutterTal (talk) 22:14, 9 June 2018 (UTC)
- @FlutterTal: This is explained on the Wikipedia:Disambiguation editing guideline in the section labelled WP:DABABBREV. There's nothing in the Them's Fightin' Herds page to show that people refer to the game as TFH. Without that, there's no evidence that someone typing "TFH" into the Wikipedia search box might be looking for the article on the game. I didn't check all the other entries on the TFH page. My attention was drawn to the "Herds" entry because it turned up on my list of spelling errors. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:15, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

Help linking
G'day John o R: I have tried to put the phrase: "weak selection" which appears in the article: "Evolutionary dynamics" into double brackets so that it will become a link to the article: "Weak Selection". If I do *not* capitalize the S, the phrase appears in red and no link is produced. If the S *is* capitalized, we get a link, but violate English grammar. Could you please have a look and advise. I would like to create links for all the relevant "weak selection"s that appear in: "Find Link". Thanks RobLandau (talk) 19:59, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
- @RobLandau: Yes, that article title shouldn't have a capital "S", should it? I've have moved the article to Weak selection. You should now be able to link to it more easily. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:21, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
- @RobLandau: [More] I see from your contributions that you haven't done much linking before. Are you aware of "piped links"? The code for these is
[[Actual name of the article|Text that you'd like the reader to see]]
. Piped links are the usual solution to this kind of problem; renaming the article is a very unusual solution, though I think correct in this case. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:45, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
