Arnold Thackray
[edit]Probably the most important is wp:verifiability (WP:V). As most anyone can edit, Wikipedia's credibility is due only to its references. So, any significant content needs to wp:cite a wp:reliable source (RS). A good starting read it help:footnotes and help:referencing for beginners. As Arnold Thackray is a biography, the most important wp:policy is wp:biographies of living persons (BLP)
For style see wp:Manual of Style. There is a box on the right where you can search (good choice of keywords essential). Biographies: wp:Manual of Style/Biography (MOS:BIO).
As I and others are wp:volunteers, we may not be watching our page all the time. You can always ask at the wp:Teahouse or wp:Help desk and usually get rapid answers. Thanks for joining the team! Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 20:32, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
Previous editing by Tahht
[edit]I undid @Tahht:'s edits as a number of things seemed off. Thackray's wife in the in the NYT source is "Barbara", but Tahht changed it to "Diana". BLPs are rather stringent on sourcing for this sort of thing. There are a few others as well. Tahht also removed content and references without comment. It is often best to avoid large scale changes such as this. Advice is to remove a section and leave a detailed wp:edit summary as to why it was removed. This is especially true if accompanying references are removed. When adding content, I strongly recommend adding the source with the content simultaneously. As pages are constantly vandalized and poorly source content added, there are a 'gang' of wp:Recent changes patrol(ers) (RCP or vandalism patrol) who use tools to monitor new changes and undo them. This is what I did for Tahht's edits. If something significant gets added (especially to a BLP) without a source. It often gets removed in seconds before the person has a chance to add the source. Unfortunately the tools don't have a check-back later feature (that I know of). I use wp:Huggle BTW. I do RCP as I can't edit but want to contribute to Wikipedia. Sigh...
If you wish to contact me in the future, please use wp:notifications. Preface your message with {{ping|Jim1138}} Your message in the middle and sign it with four tildes "~~~~" (leave out the nowiki stuff). Save all three with a single "Publish changes" If you forget the ping or signature, it won't notify me (usually). If you forget just do the ping and signature again. I did notify Tahht of this message.
All edits are saved in the wp:page history which allows for easy reverting. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 20:50, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you, Jim. I'll notify Arnold. I think that will put his mind at ease a little while I work with him on edits, citations, etc. BTW I can't find the user with that handle on Wikipedia, so thanks for notifying him/her that you've reversed the changes. If anything else comes to mind, please do let me know--- this exchange with you has been really helpful and I'm looking forward to learning more as I go.

- Just click on his name in blue above. That will take you to his/her user page - it has not been edited, so no content at the moment (wp:redlink). Click on the "Talk" tab to see the message I left. When there, click on the "User contributions" in the left column to see their edits. Or, just click on one of these links: Tahht (talk · contribs)
- Be aware the you do have a potential wp:conflict of interest here. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 21:22, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
Conflict of interest
[edit]@Jim1138: Yes, thanks for pointing this out. My relationship to Arnold is more editorial than it is personal, as it was for the Gordon Moore biography, and he and I have discussed this with respect to this Wikipedia project. My only goal is to ensure the page is accurate and well-sourced. Since he didn't instigate or participate in its creation originally, he's a bit baffled as to how or why it exists. We'll proceed with care. Thanks again.

- COIs often remove "embarrassing", "undesirable", or "don't like it" content. Even if well-sourced. If such content is unsourced, wp:pov or wp:undue that's a different story. I don't see any obviously contentious content in Arnold Thackray.
- Anybody can create an article. wp:AfC. Arnold Thackray was created by Nolabob 4/17. See the oldest history Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 23:22, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
