Independence series box

At first I just wanted to have some way of grouping the events, groups, and people from across Puerto Rico's history. I thought a category might be a good way, but since they tend to be so much more specific, I thought a series box might be better. The original was based on {{United States history (sidebar)}}, and the it was intended to be a series box, along the lines of {{Euromericas}}. But since the articles aren't really part of a series as such, and because it grew so large, it got expanded across the whole page (Tony was helping me fill it up), so I figured it would go better as a footer. So far I've only put it on the major articles, and I'm totally open to any suggestions, whether they be technical, structural, or aesthetic. WikiProjects

I have wondered about the WikiProject idea. The problem that comes up with a Caribbean WikiProject is that it ends up being too broad and too uneven. There's good coverage on Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago, but beyond that, there's a lot of holes. In addition, I'm not sure how it would mesh with the Puerto Rico WikiProject. I think that a Trinidad and Tobago WikiProject would be workable, maybe with a Caribbean WikiProject as the "parent" project to coordinate overall things like a Caribbean Ecology project. Or is that something we could do through the noticeboard? It's like the Caribbean Portal. Although I didn't start it, I tried to keep the news updated, but I found it difficult. I could update Trinidad news, or Puerto Rican news, or Jamaican news, but it's too much work to try to find an online newspaper for each island and then decide which three to five stories should be in there. On the other hand, if you go to something like AP or BBC, there just isn't enough "Caribbean" news.

WikiProjects seem too top-level for me, but there doesn't seem to be anything more intermediate. I suppose a Caribbean WikiProject which could link to Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Caribbean Ecology...

The other thing I was thinking about, but I don't know how to do it within the existing structure, is an "editor's guide". People come along all the time and add stuff to the T&T country article which is already well covered in some specific article. They have no idea how much depth there is. On the other hand, the category system is too opaque - it's hard to figure out how much depth there is in there. I don't want to create another Portal, and I don't think Portals are the best way to work anyway - I want something that would tell a new editor "this is what we have" and then nudge him or her along towards appropriate areas. But where would that go, and how would that link to the main TT page? Guettarda 18:50, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

I was looking at the article "Puerto Rico" and saw this written "Originally named San Juan Bautista, in honor of Saint John the Baptist, the island ultimately took the name of Puerto Rico (meaning Rich Port and was changed from Porto Rico; the name given by the Portuguese before the Spaniards), while the name San Juan is now delegated to its capital and largest city.". I never in my life heard anything about the Portuguese beening related to the naming of Puerto Rico, did you? I may be wrong but, I removed the part "(meaning Rich Port and was changed from Porto Rico; the name given by the Portuguese before the Spaniards)," and that's why I'm consulting you. I mean what did the Portuguese ever have to do with naming anything in Puerto Rico? As far as I know, it was the Americans after the Spanish-American War who changed the name to Porto Rico. I've tweaked Elfin-woods Warbler a bit, using Curson, Quinn and Beadle,New World Warblers ISBN 0-7136-3932-6 as the source. Nice, well researched article, but I think the main problem you will have in seeking FA status is that there is only one image of the bird, and none of the habitat, jimfbleak 19:37, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

The alternative name is given in Curson et al, as above. However, a Google came up with no hits for P R Warbler, so it seems to have no currency and should perhaps be deleted. Jim

I'm no expert on FAs, but my guess would still be that you will need more images of the species itself to have a chance. It's a real uphill struggle - see Chew Valley Lake and albatross for very good articles that still didn't make it. It's also difficult to see where you can get more data from to build up the article. jimfbleak 15:08, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Actually, both Chew Valley Lake and Albatross were promoted. The best way to get an idea of what is required is to look at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates, reading the nominated articles and then the comments people make when they choose to support or oppose the nomination. I don't think that a lack of images is actually a criteria to oppose, lack of references and depth is. I can try and help you in areas that require expansion, if it is possible, it would be an interesting case if the article is short because it is the sum of knowledge about the species, whether that would be sufficient. You are absolutely right. Everyday I see people adding names of people who are NN and I keep reverting. I know that we have a lot of talent but, just because a person, let's say, participated in a movie does not automaticly make him notable. I'm with you, what do you suggest? Have you read Carroll High School (Fort Wayne, Indiana) and looked at its history? I understand the importance of schools and school-related articles, (I started the Wikiproject:Schools more than 2 years ago. Instead of the knee-jerk "It's a school, therefore it must stay" mindset that I have done myself in the past, I urge you to re-think this vote. This article and its archived edit history is clogging the WP servers with obscene name-calling, libelous comments, and attacks on real, living people. That is exposing the WP Foundation to possible legal action. It needs deleted and started over from scratch with a cleansed history. - Davodd 23:47, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

The problem is that this school's article (unlike any of the examples you cite) started out as a vandal's attack on this project. It normally would have been speedy deleted, but it's edit history is too long. The history needs purged so a real article can take its place -- and AfD is the only process we have to do this. Hello; I know! This user is restricted by the ArbCom: banned from certain articles (which he continues to edit), edits others inexplicably (without edit summaries nor discussion), and reverts to article versions that eliminate recent edits or do not conform to some ineffable standard. Cantus has also moved the article of note to the same location from which it was moved weeks ago.

This is wholly frustrating and inconsistent with Wp editing norms. I feel compelled to notify admins of his behaviour; if you wish to do so, feel free. I've used Birdlife's publication Endemic Bird Areas of the World: Priorities for Biodiversity Conservation as my source, and the Spindalis isn't listed there, presumably as it was still lumped when they produced that work. PR Project collaboration of the month

I took a look at the article Economy of Puerto Rico and was a little disappointed of the lack of originality in the "History" section. After checking around, I became convinced that the section was copied from one of many sites in the web. What I'm planning on doing is to add a brief history which traces the begining of the islands economy from the 16th Century when the first economy was "Gold" mining to the developement of an agricultural economy which not only included "sugar" but, coffee, tobacco, cotton, poultry and citrus fruits such as the pineapple. Hi. I noticed you've been editing this at the same time as me. I've added what I can - there was one thing, I heard a report that the Governor had actually signed an Executive Order shutting down the various government agencies, but that doesn't seem to be mentioned in any of the articles I could find. I'm not sure about the proper names (spelling, accents, etc.), and I think maybe there is more background worth mentioning (the long standing economic problems in Puerto Rico, more on the dispute over the results in 2004, and perhaps the disagreements between the parties over statehood, all of which is part of why the PNP won't approve the Governor's budgets). 172.202.0.208 03:24, 2 May 2006 (UTC) (And thanks for the welcome - I am registered, but I can never remember my username and password.)

In answer to your last point, I got the feeling from what I've read that there is a lot of background (both historical and in terms of the ideological difference between the party that controls the two parties), so I thought it would be useful to create a seperate section for that. The media coverage doesn't seem to mention the background, just reporting that the government has run out of money. I had a look at the old version -- thanks for showing me where to find it -- and its entire text was just "Beat System was an EuroDance project from the mid 90's." So the new version, far more complete a stub than the old, and making claims of top-40 notability in Germany, shouldn't be deleted as a simple recreation. • I'm a businessman (I've always owned my own businesses) and I have plenty of time in my hands (I'm retiring next Thursday). Anyway when my son Antonio was just a kid in PR, he always loved boxing so, I not only took him to the bouts I also found out where the champs lived and I took him and his friends to their houses. Eventually, we moved to the U.S. and as my other children grew up, we would find out the places and hotels these people were at. I wanted my children to meet and hang out with their "heroes" so, that can see how they are in real life. The most important thing that I wanted to teach my kids was that these people had some exceptional talents but, they shouldn't be worshiped as heroes. A real heroe is a person who is willing to give his life for you expecting nothing in return and seldom receives any recognition. I told them that these were mothers, fathers, fireman, soldiers, policeman and so on. I have a room in my house with autographs and mementos. Thanks for checking it out. Image:Sincitypred.jpg was tagged as a duplicate of Image:Movie spy kids alexa vega.jpg. While they may both be of the same person, they aren't the same image. It either can be deleted after 7 days for lacking of a license/source or because it is an unused fair use image. However, you are right that Image:Sincitypred.jpg and Image:Al50ml.jpg are duplicates, but I wasn't aware of the latter. There must be some weird caching issue right now. When I click on Image:Movie spy kids alexa vega.jpg, I get a different image, but popups and the articles that image is in gives me an identical image of Image:Sincitypred.jpg. I have even opened the images in another browser (so nothing would be cached) and I am seeing the same problem. I'd assume it is a caching problem on Wikipedia's side so if we wait a few hours, maybe it will resolve itself. --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 00:22, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Cool, thanks. Now, what didn't you like about the edit? I would like to organize the article, right now there are sub-sections that can be placed under one of the bigger sections. The list of external links is so huge, we have articles for some of them. The Topics in Puerto Rico template can be removed as well, since you can reach all those links by visiting articles mentioned in the page, and I haven't seen a "Did you know?" in any other country article; that's something for a portal. —Drowne | Talk 16:07, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Actually, I didn't create sub-divisions, I just moved the existant divisions and put them under the bigger parent. The current ToC is the complex one. For example, we have flora and fauna and geology as independent parent sections when these should go under Geography. People expect to see that under geography since it's the natural parent subject.

I agree with you that India, like Singapore (same population as PR), have a great ToC, but I didn't create all the enormous subsections about history and demographics, and removing them wouldn't be appropiate so I left them like they are, while trying to organize the article in a logical form.

About the DYK, I wouldn't say it was "extensively" debated when only 2 contributors participated in the discussion. The VfD was for the DYK article per se, not for the section inside the Puerto Rico article. I have never seen a country article including a DYK section, that always goes in the country's portal. That's why I removed it.
