Welcome to Wikipedia, JoeMcCaff! I'm I dream of horses, and I've been assigned as your mentor. About half of new Wikipedia accounts receive a mentor chosen randomly from a list of volunteers. It just means I'm here to help with anything you need! We need to have all kinds of people working together to create an online encyclopedia, so I'm glad you're here. Over time, you will figure out what you enjoy doing the most on Wikipedia.

You might have noticed that you have access to a tutorial and suggested edits. It's recommended that you take advantage of this, as it'll make learning how to edit Wikipedia easier.

If you need assistance with anything or have any questions, click on the "Get editing help" button on the bottom right corner of your screen. This will open up a module with links to help pages and a place to ask me questions. You can also ask me questions directly on my talk page, or go here to get help from the wider community.

New articles and personal information

[edit]

Hi! Good work creating the new article for 100% Redress. I look forward to seeing more of your contributions across the pages on Irish politics. You could consider adding the template Template:User WikiProject Ireland to your user page.

One thing I'd recommend when you create a new article is to see how other articles can link to it, and indeed if other articles already do link to it. You had added a link from Irish defective block crisis, so it wasn't an orphan, but you also could see how it fits in with other pages. For example, I added it to Template:Political parties in the Republic of Ireland, so that it is now linked to all other parties that have pages. That way, more people will see the page, and hopefully other editors will contribute to it and develop it.

Might I also advise reducing the personal information on your user page? Consider the essay WP:OPCAD on the subject and the more formal guidance at WP:USERPAGE. For example, I previously edited under my real name, before deciding it would be prudent to adopt a pseudonym. A sleuth could work it out, but it would be hassle for a bot or scammer to do so now. In particular, I'd advise against having your birthdate on your user page. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 10:46, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Thanks! I wasn't sure if Template:User WikiProject Ireland was something I had to apply for or whatever. As you can tell I'm kind of new haha.
Also thanks for adding that link to 100% Redress, I should have checked to see if there was anywhere else I could have added it.
At first I chose my name because I didn't think people would really care or find me but as time has gone on I've wished I picked something more anonymous. I'll see if I can get it change. I will also accept your suggestion. JoeMcCaff (talk) 21:00, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In relation to the last, I know the feeling! It can be done through Special:GlobalRenameRequest, just check out WP:RENAME first. In the reason, you could explain that you want to keep your identity more private, or something of that nature.
You're more than welcome to WP:IE, I'm delighted to find another enthusiastic contributor. Do feel free to check in with my own talk page if you have queries, and even these very many years later, I'm still myself learning about best and better practice! No worries at all about not adding further links, I'm happy to help out there. It's as much to make sure your own contribution in adding a page is actually seen. Though I'd expect it will be once candidates are formally nominated for 100% Redress in a few months. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 07:58, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Next Irish general election, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Sunday Independent. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
