Re: Interpreting WHOIS
Bainer, can you explain to me how to interpret the results from a WHOIS report? You remarked on ANI about 203.109.223.1 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log). I'd like to know how you can tell that it is a a dynamic dsl address and such, thanks. - JodyB talk 18:24, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
- The WHOIS will tell you who owns the IP address; the WHOIS for this IP shows that it's part of a block of IPs with the same details (the "inetnum" field shows the range of the block), the "netname" is TIG, which is The Internet Group. You can see from the "status" field that it is "ALLOCATED PORTABLE"; this means that it's not a static IP. The reverse DNS for this IP resolves to "203-109-223-1.dsl.dyn.ihug.co.nz" - which indicates it belongs to the ISP ihug, and that it's probably part of the dynamically allocated ("dyn") DSL pool ("dsl"). You obviously can't tell for sure just from the publicly available information, but everything indicates it's not a static IP.
- Was that helpful? There's no shortage of IT people around to ask if you need some more detailed information, I'm no professional :) --bainer (talk) 23:47, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
From the archives of the talk page for the Mobile article, I see you were quite active to that page. I just thought to let you know that it has passed it's GA review. Sorry, if this is really out of the blue. :) Best, — Rudget contributions 19:40, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
G11 Speedy Delete of Kel'Thuzad soft redirect
Hi! Could you explain your reasoning on this deletion? --Stormie (talk) 23:38, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your question. It's sole purpose is to direct people off site. You might be able to add it as an external link in an article. It offers nothing to the wikipedia reader except to point to an external site. We are not a link repository. -JodyB talk 23:41, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
- One more thing. I am a little surprised that you would want to keep this as an admin. You note in your edit summary that you wanted to see if anyone saluted it - you know better. Maybe a redirect to the game article at best. - JodyB talk 23:47, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Jody! I created that link due to a lack of response to my attempts to start a discussion on directing people who wish to work on "unwanted" articles to a more appropriate Wikia project. Just trying to get the BOLD, revert, discuss cycle rolling by creating a single soft redirect to see what would happen. :-)
- One more thing. I am a little surprised that you would want to keep this as an admin. You note in your edit summary that you wanted to see if anyone saluted it - you know better. Maybe a redirect to the game article at best. - JodyB talk 23:47, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
- My thoughts on the matter are at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)/Archive 3#Soft redirects to Wikia wikis and other non-Wikimedia GFDL projects, but basically, I do think it offers something to the Wikipedia reader: direction to the appropriate place to read or write GFDL-licensed Free Content on the topic, that place being Wikia's World of Warcraft wiki.
- There is a strong body of opinion (which I entirely agree with) that a topic such as a videogame character is not appropriate per Wikipedia's policies (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Warcraft character articles, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kel'Thuzad), but a lot of people want to write about such things, and I think such enthusiasm should be met with a little gentle guidance, not the "nn, fancruft" deletion that so often occurs.
- Anyway, I appreciate your comments on my BOLD redirect! --Stormie (talk) 00:26, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
I really don't think one can call this a G11. It's a softredirect to an interwiki link. If interwiki links themselves exist for projects outside of the Foundation, that should say something about how we view them. Understandable that you felt it was "advertisement", since this is all out of the norm, but I still wouldn't call it a G11. -- Ned Scott 10:11, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
User:Meleniumshane90 issues
Hi Jody, I had reverted a few of User:Meleniumshane90's edits to Celebration, Florida and he removed my template messages on his talk page. I noticed you said it was ok for him to do so in your (very fair) stipulations for unblocking him. Is that true? I thought removing warnings was bad form, and there are some templates about it (Template:Uw-tpv1, 2, and 3 for example). --AW (talk) 20:53, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your question. User:Meleniumshane90 has been a problem user and has been blocked from Wikipedia since 29 November 2007. I did offer to unblock him if he would agree to the conditions. He refused and, if you'll read his discussion page, you will see I refused the unblock. It appears he returned to edit via an unregistered IP account but was quickly blocked at the ip.
- The guidelines do allow him to remove templates from his user discussion page. You will see this at this link. The templates you mention are for use on article discussion pages and would absolutely be vandalism. Frankly, I think removing them is bad form as it interferes with communication, but at this time it is permitted.
- Inasmuch as his registered account is blocked indefinitely there is little else we can do except watch for vandal edits and deal with them as they arise. Thanks again for your concern! - JodyB talk 23:01, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. I didn't see it was blocked indefinitely, so that's good. --AW (talk) 22:47, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

So many edits...
Hi, no, I'm not. What I'm doing:
- I go to the user creation log.
- I open up a new tab.
- I copy and paste {{subst:Welcome}} ~~~~ onto the new account's talk page.
- I save the page.
- I repeat.
It doesn't really take that long, once you've done it a few times. Littleteddy (talk) 12:43, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Great success!
Dear Jody,
Thank you for your participation in my request for adminship, which ended successfully with a final tally of (52/10/1). I was impressed by the thoughtful comments on both sides, and the RFA process in general. The extra buttons do look pretty snazzy, but I'll be careful not to overuse them. If you have advice to share or need assistance with anything, feel free to drop me a message or email. Thank you and good day! Vandalism?
I had not the capability of logging in, while at work, when it came to Lara. When others were exclaiming how 'hot' she was, as an admin, I exclaimed, "I want her to revert my edits!" Had I been logged in, this would not have been an issue. Even greater, even if I was an anon, where did I vandalize? That is a harsh accusation. the_undertow talk 13:02, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- Your conduct is disrupting the functioning of this project. You are smart enough to know better. When someone who knows better does poorly and does so with intent then that's a form of vandalism. The issue with your talk page and the POINTY addition of your name and SSN while seeking a namechange is poor behavior for anyone especially an admin. -JodyB talk 13:06, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- There is no 'especially an admin.' All editors should be held to the same standards. Vandalism is not subjective - you have the burden of showing where I damaged the efforts of others. My talk page has been rectified; it is transparent as it gets. My namechange has been in the works for 6 days, my SSN is my own to publicize. It is an exercise in transparency, and a good faith measure. the_undertow talk 13:11, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- You are welcome to your opinions but I believe that administrators should strive to set the example for the wider community. Ideally, all editors should behave but if admins do not then it doesn't make sense to demand that others do better. Your very recent choices are troubling and together suggest you are being disruptive. By itself, a name change is fine - I did it once. But it seems you are creating a situation whereby the name change becomes necessary. Your SSN is yours (I guess) and publishing it is your choice too. I simply ask you to back off and let's get back to editing the encyclopedia. -JodyB talk 13:24, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- your suggestion is noted. if i am disruptive, it's not pointy, so be it. but the name change was and is not relevant - as it was in place before all was said and done. your advice is well received, but no vandalism was done on my part, nor will it ever be. the_undertow talk 13:29, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- Then you and I will have no problems. - JodyB talk 14:31, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- How ominous. But even if we do have problems, not everyone is going to get along, and that is just a concept that I am used to. As of right now, I think we are all good. the_undertow talk 22:31, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

User:71.170.220.213
Greetings. I was cleaning out some CAT:TEMP pages and came across User talk:71.170.220.213, that you'd indefblocked. I've been told that, normally, we don't indefblock IPs as such. The reasoning is that if the user changes ISP and the blocked IP were eventually assigned to a new computer, it would in turn be indefblocked. Would you consider unblocking and reblocking them say, for 6 months or perhaps a year? Thanks for your consideration, --Bradeos Graphon (talk) 22:32, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- Hmmm, not sure why I did that. I will certainly have a look. -JodyB talk 22:38, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- Ah Hah! I was partially wrong. I did leave an indef template on the talk page but I only blocked for 72 hours. He was already unblocked. -JodyB talk 22:45, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- I think that there are some block templates floating around that were modified from indefblock templates but didn't have the CAT:TEMP flag removed. I've seen 2 more since I left you the above note. Thanks! --Bradeos Graphon (talk) 23:15, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Is there a reason you didn't remove the links? Just curious. --Spike Wilbury ♫ talk 20:10, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

- I'm doing it with AWB but its still tedious. I'm only removing the mainspace links right now. -JodyB talk 21:36, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- Just as a follow-up, I think the redlinks in mainspace have been eliminated. There may be a few that I failed to catch but I think most of the are gone. The redlinks outside of mainspace are left as they serve as notice to user pages and discussion pages of the changes. In the process, several redirects were deleted as G6 housekeeping as they redirected to a page deleted via AfD. -JodyB talk 13:18, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Your Coincidence with ILOVETHEOC
You unblocked this guy after he promised not to post "copywritten [sic]" photos anymore. There seemed to be some confusion about whether he should have been blocked. I'm not confused, he clearly deserved it. Look for "Hot_Lilo.jpg". —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kww (talk • contribs) 03:46, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
- Let's see, I did not unblock him. He was caught in an autoblock which expires on its on after 24 hours. I would have unblocked him as I had no reason to block him in the first place. I thought he was a sock and I was wrong. The image you are presently upset about will work its way through the process and an admin will deal with it. Absent any evidence of a copyvio what exactly do you want me to do? -JodyB talk 04:54, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
- True enough. I was trying too hard to use a cute phrase over the link. I do think he needs monitoring. I'll continue to look for the exact image (it's part of one of those sets, where you find fifteen images with the arms in different positions). Just thought you should be aware of things going on with someone you had just been involved with.Kww (talk) 12:41, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
- I am in an especially delicate situation here. My involvment with him was only because he was coincidentally caught in an autoblock at about the same time as I blocked another user for copyvios of images. I incorrectly suggested he was a sock. RFCU proved me wrong. For me to now rebuke him, not to mention block him, without the strongest of evidence, would be a serious error in judgment. -JodyB talk 12:51, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Mike and the Mad Dog
Hey Jody. I'd appreciate your opinion on a situation related to the above article. Another user asked me to take a look at a link being added to Mike and the Mad Dog and related articles to confirm that the link didn't belong. The link is to an unauthorized message board/fan site/blog, and GordonGekko99 (talk · contribs) who was adding the link, now claims not to be violating policy because he/she is writing an entire paragraph about the blog rather than linking directly to it. I've removed the paragraph already as spam/advertisement, but he/she has re-added it. If you could give me an outside opinion on this, I'd appreciate it. I don't want to edit war over something, especially if I'm misinterpreting policy. Thanks, - auburnpilot talk 13:58, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Good catch on 208.110.82.58. I notice that you soft blocked it. Is this intentional? Normally proxies are hard blocked. For example, in this particular case, if we only soft block the proxy, Gastrich can continue to edit on that IP using socks. --B (talk) 18:11, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject Alabama
Hey, I wanted to ask another dumb question. Will the assessment box on the project page automatically update itself? I just finished another round of rating unassessed articles and was wondering. By my estimate, we now have 284 unassessed articles left to do. All of them are radio stations, I may try to get them done too soon. Right now, if I never read another biography stub it will be too soon! Anyway, that knocks out the majority of our unrated articles. I think that maybe 3 or 4 were List class, about 15 were B, about a third were Start, and the rest were Stub. Thanks in advance. Altairisfartalk 22:26, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
- You're doing great work. I know how you feel. I did over 4,000 edits in April many of which were the initial tagging of articles for the project. There is a bot that does the update every night although it may sometimes miss. It should catch it soon. There are 287 total remaining but 284 that are in the mainspace (according to AWB). I'll try and help. -JodyB talk 22:49, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, most were easy to rate, only a few were on a border between classes and I just used my best judgement in those cases and left an explanation on the talk page. The shear bulk of it was the kicker. Maybe we can get on to other things once we have this out of the way. And thanks for giving me a hand. Altairisfartalk 23:10, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks
Thanks. Seems everything you do pops up in my watchlist :). As regards to 1800Petmeds, the article is much improved by the article's creator, but the real test will be when things get added to the article that weren't "asked for" by the article's creator's boss. We'll see if WP:OWN rears its ugly head. A quick search brought this back and this is an interesting forum that says Petmeds isn't allowed in Indiana, among other allegations. This newspaper wrote about the legal troubles of PetMeds (near the bottom of page one, into page 2 of the article). Also, the first link has a list of references at the bottom that detail PetMeds legal troubles, including DVM articles, which I believe are "Doctors of Veterinary Medicine" magazine, or some such. This might get interesting yet! Keeper | 76 20:15, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
RFCU Clerking
Thank you. I thought us clerks were to send any case that was non-complaint to the bottom - that case had no history of blocks. -- Whiteandnerdy111 (talk) 20:49, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Very often some cases will have no blocks. A puppetmaster mentioned in the case was blocked and the question was whether those were connected. You may make a comment but be careful about removing listings. Give the actual checkusers ample room to work. -JodyB talk 20:53, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Let me say a little more. The procedures page notes that cases can be delisted under specific conditions. However we are to use great discretion when making those decisions. The user in this case posted a link to a previous case involving a user who had been blocked for sockpuppetry. Our job is not to be strict guardians of the page, but to request additional information and do the clean-up when needed. In my judgment, it would have to be pretty extreme to delist. -JodyB talk 21:01, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Help Please
So I'm not really sure how to do this, but JODYB - could you help me please? I work for 1800petmeds and recently had someone write an article for our business. My boss says every big company has an article on wikipedia and we should have one too. So we wrote one and you deleted it - Can you tell me what we did wrong so we can fix it? Thanks so much - Alex Irvin Alnino1 (talk) 16:28, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- I have restored the page as subpage of yours. The link is User:Alnino1/1800petmeds. The article has actually been deleted 2 times. In both cases the article reads less like an encyclopedia entry and more like an advertisement. There are a few things you need to do. First, be aware that you have a conflict of interest in editing the page. Such is not prohibited but you should read WP:COI. In addition, know that anyone can edit the article. You will not "own" it. See WP:OWN. Next, you should read WP:V. This explains how the article must verify that your company is notable. Notice I said "must." Any article without verification of notability is subject to deletion. In order to prove such notability you must use WP:RS, that is, reliable sources. Your own website is not sufficient. Articles from the Wall Steet Journal, Business Week, etc would be useful. Please contact me if I can assist. When you finish your improvements, I will return the article to the encyclopedia mainspace where people will be able to see it. Thanks for you question. -JodyB talk 16:57, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
Hi Jody - I just added some articles from forbes and businessweek, and the company listing on yahoo finance and the nasdaq website. Also added company officers from google finance. Does that help? Thanks again, AlexAlnino1 (talk) 19:04, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- Much better, especially the Forbes and Business Week materials. Look carefully at the sources. I added them as "inline citations" which looks much better. It also allows you to use the references section at the bottom automatically. Read WP:CITE for more information. I also did a little editing to make look less like an advertisement. Take a couple of days and add anything and then I will move it back into the mainspace. You also need to decide if the company is to be called 1-800-Petmeds or 1800PetMeds. Pick on and we will stay with it throughout. Let me know if I can help more. -JodyB talk 03:14, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Boy, you have got to be getting sick of me by now. FYI - I'm not sure if I did the right thing, but I deleted the user subpage. When the boss searches for us on wikipedia (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/1800petmeds) - he was coming to the page that just had no info on it and a link to the article. I deleted this page hoping it will now go straight to the article. When the boss has a bad day, I have a bad day :(Alnino1 (talk) 15:21, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Not a problem at all. I have done some housekeeping which should make it where the boss can type either 1800petmeds or 1800Petmeds into the search box and he will get the correct article. He does know that a Wikipedia article cannot help your search page ranking doesn't he? -JodyB talk 15:43, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks so much Jody. Yea he knows :) Have a very Merry CHRISTMAS !!!!!!!!!!Alnino1 (talk) 15:11, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

−Dear Jodyb, Regarding CSD A1 : " Very short article providing little or no context,etc...'. Can you tell me what do you mean by no context? The article does have context, but if it requires more information, can you show me ?
I don't understand what you mean context. Can you outline what context you want? Keilana 00:06, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

- There are a number of problems here. It is unclear of you are speaking of a literal road or highway or if this is some part of a game. The writing, not to be rude, is in rather poor English and that makes it hard to understand. Because it is unclear what you are talking about or even where you are talking about, it is impossible for the reader to have any context to understand what the article is about. Another problem is that your article does not assert that it is an important topic. I am not judging if it is or is not, just that the article makes no such claim. I would suggest that you recreate in the article in your userspace, not in the wikipedia mainspace, and work on it there. I would also suggest you gather some reliable sources that will verify what you say about the topic. This will help prevent a future deletion. If you need help in establishing the article in your userspace, Let me know and I will help. - JodyB talk 11:52, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

page erased while seeking help
I've been asked by editor (pesantworrior) to plase question in new contributors list regarding new article SAI - Small Arms Industries ApS .... but article now is erased again .... how can I get help ...
It frustrates me to see my article being erased when an article on "surefire" is "judged" as OK????? I don't get it .... (but the reason may be the Jimmy Wales qoute on the surefire article !!!!!) Lapsai (talk) 16:10, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

... yes ... very nice ... but what about MY article ... I feel it was OK! ... I was told to ask for comments on the "New contributors list" to get help with fixing the issues ... and then you erase it ?
.. also it seems that a disision has been made not to listne to what I have to say.... ??? Not very democratic is it ... ?? The article was changes over and over again ... it got worked on all day while discussiong content with peasantwarrior ... I follow directions given .... just to end up with the argument from your side ...:Please see WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. The existance of one article is not dependent on others like it.
I feel my rights has been violated. ! ... and I guess there's nothing to do about it .... as I also stated... I can't quote Jimmy Wales..... but i'm more and more sure it would help me if i could ! ... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lapsai (talk • contribs) 16:53, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Plastic Fuzz page deleetd
Hello, why was my page deleted? I know there was not alot of content but I was adding to more to it. Benthatavoshky (talk) 11:51, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
Speedy tags and hangons
On the article Anastasiya Markovich, you removed my speedy deletion tag with the following rationale:
- since you added the speedy but didn't want ot speedied, I removed it. Don't add it if you don't want someone to delete it.
Actually, this is something I do quite often: I add a speedy tag, and the author replaces it with the hangon tag (instead of adding it, as should be done), so I put back my speedy tag on top so that the admin who examines the page knows exactly what my rationale is.
Please let me know if there's a better way to handle such a situation. --Blanchardb-Me•MyEars•MyMouth-timed 03:24, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, I see. For some reason I didn't see there were two authors. It looked as if you authored the article, added the speedy and then added the hangon tag. Guess I was terribly confused. Anyway, someone else got it. Sorry for the problem. -JodyB talk 11:28, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
