When adding links to material on external sites, as you did to John Wayne, please ensure that the external site is not violating the creator's copyright. Linking to websites that display copyrighted works is acceptable as long as the website's operator has created or licensed the work. Knowingly directing others to a site that violates copyright may be considered contributory infringement. This is particularly relevant when linking to sites such as YouTube, where due care should be taken to avoid linking to material that violates its creator's copyright. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If you believe the linked site is not violating copyright with respect to the material, then you should do one of the following:

  • If the linked site is the copyright holder, leave a message explaining the details on the article Talk page;
  • If a note on the linked site credibly claims permission to host the material, or a note on the copyright holder's site grants such permission, leave a note on the article Talk page with a link to where we can find that note;
  • If you are the copyright holder or the external site administrator, adjust the linked site to indicate permission as above and leave a note on the article Talk page;

If the material is available on a different site that satisfies one of the above conditions, link to that site instead. NeilN talk to me 19:50, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jimbo, did you see my reply here Talk:John_Wayne? --NeilN talk to me 13:20, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize Neil, I am still unfamiliar with using the talk pages, and am not sure yet that I am doing this correctly. Here is my site statement about copyright/pd status: http://free-classic-movies.com/terms.php A link to it is available in the left column on every page site wide

I put no 'copyright' notice on the site because none of the content is copyrighted, and I don't even desire to claim the site design - the site is intended to be as 'open source' as possible. I check copyright status on films very carefully - there is plenty of quality public domain material that is disappearing because without a profit potential it remains on dusty shelves, so I have no desire or motive to share anything that rightfully belongs to another. I have had positive communication with a Warner copyright lawyer very early in the site's history, and am reasonably confident that my current copyright research efforts are as near perfect as is possible. I appreciate any advice on Wiki community customs and how to be a good neighbor. I was looking forward to editing a couple of grammar-challenged pages each time I log on, but the three boxes leading to editing tasks do not appear any more when I log on, I will search as I have time and find ways to contribute quality time and efforts to Wiki, whether or not any links to my site are deemed worthy of sharing Jimbo-Berkey (talk) 13:42, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've added some welcome help at the top. If you do want to add more links, I would first place a note on the article's talk page explaining the movies are all in the public domain. --NeilN talk to me 14:44, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We do have a project dedicated to film articles - Wikipedia:WikiProject Film. You might want to post on Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Film and get their thoughts on adding links to film articles. --NeilN talk to me 14:56, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Neil

Thanks for the links to film related and actor related projects. I am feeling that external links to films, other than to imdb and archive.org are not welcomed, and will channel my contributions in other directions. Jimbo-Berkey (talk) 15:02, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
