Testing template

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/nawanagar_buxar#

I would suggest that you change the template wording to "This AfC draft requires review by an experienced editor", thus making it correct English and more in line with Wikipedia's usual style. ► Philg88 ◄ talk 14:08, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks @Philg88: will do that. Jim Carter (talk) 14:18, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

Mass messaging

You should ask here: Wikipedia_talk:Mass_message_senders. I don't know enough to assign the permission Samir 01:04, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

I don't know anything about assigning those rights or about mass messaging. Sorry. Best to ask at the talk page above. Samir 02:43, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

Please help this new user

Hi Jim Cartar, Would you have time to help this new user? They added some biographical detail to the article on Nawanagar (village), which I have reverted as inappropriate. I have suggested on their user page that they propose the new article at WP:AFC. Thanks in advance. ► Philg88 ◄ talk 13:31, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Thank you @Philg88:, my server is currently so weak that I can barely load any web page. So, I was wondering if you can advice him. Thank you. Jim Carter (talk) 13:39, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

::No problem. I've already given a basic guide to what needs to be done but since India is your specialty I thought it might be helpful if you had some input too. ► Philg88 ◄ talk 13:47, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

More on div tag

Thanks, but could you teach me more about the div tag and other tags used in coding templates. Medara Bassey (talk) 09:25, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

Hello @Medara Bassey:, welcome to my talkpage. It is good to see that you are interested in creating templates. But before I start, I want you to see this first. Actually templates help us to create infinite copy of something. It is easy to create a template. <div> </div> are used in the starting and at the end of any template to divide the template from mixing with other contents in a page. There are many tags used in creating a template. Do you know about userboxes? you can see them here. But for now I will tell you about color codes and tags used to change color of a text. We generally use <font></font> to change colour, design of text etc. Here we will see how color code works. Let we take this words- "Hello world". and we chose to take color- Orange. Now if we type this: <font color="Orange"> Hello world</font> it will show: Hello world. You can see the color of the text is changed. You can try this here. To change the color use this format: <font color="input color name">Your text</font>. Some basic color codes can be found here. (Note:web color code can also be used they look like this:#999999) Please let me know if you have understand this basic color changing. Jim Carter (talk) 01:42, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I understand perfectly. Please more on background color and image icons. Medara Bassey (talk) 03:59, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
Okay now to change the background color or style we generally use <div></div> tags. Let me show you an example: <div style="padding: 8px; background: #CC6633; border: 2px solid #666666;"></div> In the example <div style=""> is the opening and </div> is the end. Now you can change the color by changing the color code (You can also use color names ex-Orange) given after "background". Here, padding means the format you want to use or the size. And border means the border of the background Let me show you an example how it works. We chose the color: Orange. And some words-"Hello world" it will show.
Hello world

I have used this format: <div style="padding: 8px; background: Orange; border: 2px solid #666666;">Your text</div>.

Image icons are real images which have been changed into smaller size images. For example: The tree image is in bigger size (see at the left)
But we can change the size like this: [[File:Solitary tree near lake.jpg|thumb|left]] Here "Solitary tree near lake.jpg" is the image. "thumb" is the thumbnail and "left" is the alignment. If you change the thumb with 22px (px is pixel) then the image will become smaller like the smaller tree at the left.
Less the pixel less the image size. Now tell me have you understand? Jim Carter (talk) 01:09, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

Translation notification: Wikimedia Blog/Drafts/Heartbleed

Hello Jim Cartar,

You are receiving this notification because you signed up as a translator to Hindi and Canadian English on Meta. The page Wikimedia Blog/Drafts/Heartbleed is available for translation. You can translate it here:

This is the text of a just published blog post summarizing the actions taken to protect users of Wikimedia sites against the recently discovered "Heartbleed" security vulnerability. (The post explains that users will need to re-login the next time they use their accounts and suggests to change passwords as a standard precautionary measure, but it is currently not intended to enforce a password change for all users.) Completed translations will be added to the blog post.

Your help is greatly appreciated. Translators like you help Meta to function as a truly multilingual community.

Thank you!

Rollback

Hi Jim, apologies for the delay replying to your request for rollback. I have turned it on for you, but please be sure that you read and understand the rollback guideline, Wikipedia:Rollback. In reviewing your edits, I noticed a couple of times you reverted edits which I felt were not obvious vandalism and really could have done with an explanatory edit summary. The rollback tool should not be used to revert good faith edits (even if they are unhelpful) since the edit summary is automatically generated. Remember that any administrator can revoke this right at any time if they think you are misusing it. Cheers, Sarah 11:22, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

Okay @Sarah:, generally I don't like to revert changes. I leave it to others. But when I find something that needs change at that time I revert. Actually I use WP:Popups to revert. And the problem with popup is that we cannot change the default edit summary instead it automatically save the page. That is why I cannot explain why I reverted the changes. Anyway thank you very much. I will use this right only when it is needed. Thank you again. Jim Carter (talk) 11:36, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
Understood. Rollback is similar to the popups tool in that the edit summary is automatic and you don't have the option of entering your own. If the edit really should have an edit summary then you should use undo or manual editing so you can enter a summary, rather than popups, rollback or other tools which generate an automatic summary. Anyway, I thought your edits basically looked good; it wasn't a major problem or I wouldn't have given you the tool. It was just a couple of reversions I noticed and I had to point that out to you as part of reviewing your request. :) Sarah 15:40, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker)} One other caution about Rollback: When you click it, the revert happens, immediately; there isn't a "confirmation" step where you can cancel it if you make a mistake or change your mind. I used to have Rollback rights, but I asked that they be removed, because I found Rollback to be a problem when I was viewing Wikipedia via cell phone. The "rollback" button is right there on the history page, where you can easily touch it by mistake while trying to hit some other button. Touch it and wham! somebody's edit gets rolled back. On a cell phone, the combination of big fingers and small buttons means this can easily happen by accident. In my case, after I had to apologize for and reverse some accidental rollbacks, I decided to have it disabled. I'd rather use "undo" where you have a chance to change your mind, and where you can customize your edit summary. --MelanieN (talk) 20:35, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) MelanieN is spot on, I've had the same problem with a Google Nexus tablet and had to apologise, and one editor did the same to me. I don't know what mobile device you are using, but it's a good idea to wait for the watchlist to fully load in the browser before your fingers go anywhere near the list on screen. Cheers, ► Philg88 ◄ talk 06:03, 11 April 2014
Ooo. Now I understand that why you requested to remove your rollback privileges. Well I will rarely use this feature. I have a similar experience: Today while hovering over my watchlist I accidentally clicked the Rollback. It was a edit by sysop Rambling Man (Uhh I'm sorry it was The Rambling Man) on his own talk page. Fortunately the rollback won't work because of my connection problem if it would have worked then I'm sure that my rollback rights would have gone untill now. Anyway, thank you MelanieN and Philg88 for sharing your experience, I will take more care when browsing through my cell phone (It is different if my Samsung S4 starts betraying me). And if I face any more problem then I will ask Sarah to remove it. Thank you Sarah for reviewing my request. Jim Carter (talk) 06:45, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
