Endianness

While it's true that int >= 16 bits, it's also true that a char can be 16 bits, if that's how big a byte is. And if long is 32 bits, you still have to deal with endianness.

I think the C example as good as it's going to get (other than matters of style). There are reasons why it's written the way it is, and I try to explain them on the talk page any time someone makes an incorrect or unnecessary change. If we're wrong, please read the discussion on the talk page and explain why.
