April Johnson
[edit]Yes, even though you determined that there's no April, why would anyone make up a fanfic about a minor character? I think April should be real. Janet6
- Unfortunately, given that this is an encyclopedia, it must confine itself to things as they really are, not things as you wish they should be. *Dan T.* 04:49, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
Unencyclopedia comment
[edit]Janet6 said... Here's a headline I would love to see in the newspaper:
- UNCYCLOPEDIA SHUT DOWN!
I would really love to see that in the paper.
- I think Yamamoto Ichiro deleted that comment because he thought it was vandalism. It's not "YOUR" talk page; it's Janet6's talk page. "YOUR" talk page would be User talk:24.255.115.243. Unless User:24.255.115.243 is also Janet6, in which case you really should log in if you want to avoid this misunderstanding in the future. --68.76.126.13 18:16, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
Response to complaint at Talk:Wikipedia
[edit]Three things. First, as we note in our welcome messages, please don't be put off by grumpy editors. Second, please remember that every contribution is going to be "edited mercilessly" and we don't own our contributions. Third, please use article Talk pages solely for discussions about improving that article, not for opining about the subject of the article. Thanks, and happy editing. Jkelly 18:10, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
- In response to your further comments, it is unfortunate that you did not find my reponse above helpful, and I would like to reiterate that Talk:Wikipedia should be used to discuss imroving the article about Wikipedia, not to chat about the project in general. Perhaps you would like to start a discussion at the Village Pump if you are looking for more input. Jkelly 18:25, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. :-) Janet 18:31, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

My wikibreak
[edit]Hi, everyone. My wikibreak has been good so far. I'm currently vacationing in the Bahamas and I won't be back 'til the 26th of March, though I won't be back on Wikipedia until at least a week after that. So, as I type in my little hotel room overlooking the Nassau beach, I'd like to start a conversation with some wiki-users and answer some questions. A wiki user named Greatigers and another user I can't remember (sorry) asked what source I have for Violet "Mallory" Gray. Well, I hear that a new Charlie Brown movie will be released over in home USA, and I want to see it. What does this have to do with the Mallory story? Well, I was reading a little newspaper in California one day (I flew over Calif. and read on the way to Nassau) and I heard that the 1969 film A Boy Named Charlie Brown may be remade. I read that Violet will be Violet Mallory, although I should have cited some more solid sources ... sorry! Also: my second question is posted at the Arthur talk page under the header "Arthur birthdays", I think. Thanks for reading :-) --Janet in Nassau
- I'm sorry no one has answered your messages yet. You're still fairly new to the project (only about 113 edits), so you probably haven't met a lot of other editors yet. I don't want to be the bad guy, but I must remind you that the primary purpose of Wikipedia is to build a free-content encyclopedia and that irrelevant discussions should be kept to a minimum. However, at the same time, I realize that Wikipedia is also a community and that interesting and humorous discussions are important to strengthen community relationships. So, I invite you to come over to Esperanza's coffee lounge and start a discussion there. (Although you don't have quite enough edits to officially join Esperanza yet, you are welcome to join our random conversations before you actually sign up.) That way, you can attract an audience and you won't need to clutter up article discussion pages with unrelated comments. --TantalumTelluride 06:52, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the Esperanza page, TantalumTelluride. I looked at the discussion page and I noticed that it hasn't been written in since 11 February. Also, are you a male or female? Janet 21:39, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- The non-Wikipedia discussions are on the actual project page, not the discussion page. The only thing happening there right now is a couple of games. All the old discussions have been archived. You are welcome to start a new topic at the bottom of the page. And I am a male (although I don't know why that matters). --TantalumTelluride 21:49, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- Are you planning on going on wikibreak any time soon? Janet 21:54, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- Nope. Even when I try to take a break, I can't stop editing completely. I'm addicted. --TantalumTelluride 21:58, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- Do you know how I can personalize my userpage? Janet 22:14, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry I missed this question before. How do you want to customize it. I'd be willing to help you. --TantalumTelluride 22:09, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- You could just copy some stuff from other people's pages. Click "edit this page", mark the text by clicking in the box and pressing control-A, copy it with control-C, and paste it into notepad or some other text editor with control-V, then abort the edit. My userpage has a huge amount of unneccessary fluff/lint on it, mostly due to a bout of insomnia, and you might find that useful. Also, my talk page has a header with a sort of "click here to leave a message" thingy. Liked your article about Jane's World, btw, will check that webcomic out. :) Zuiram 04:53, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Importing pics
[edit]I have spread the word about Wikipedia to one of my friends. She is considering becoming a contributor/user and has one question: how do can she import pictures from other websites or her own pics? I was confused when I read the rules at "Upload File". Janet 22:01, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- First of all, make sure that all the images that you and your friend upload are not copyrighted. Copyrighted images are only allowed under very specific fair-use conditions, and most images on the internet are copyrighted even if they don't have an explicit copyright notice. Save the image somewhere on your computer. Photographs should typically be saved as JPEG files. Then go to Special:Upload and enter all the information. First, type in the complete file name or use the browse button to look for it. Then, type in the name you want to file to have on Wikipedia. For example, for Image:Example.jpg, the destination filename is Example.jpg. In the summary box, write a brief description of the image and its source/author. Then, choose a license. If you are uploading your own photographs, you should most likely choose to license them under the GFDL or release them into the public domain. That means you must grant permission for anyone to use them for any purpose and you no longer hold the copyright. Once you release an image into the public domain, you can never reclaim the copyright. Likewise, if you license it under the GFDL, you can't come back later and change your mind. If you are sure you want to release your rights and that no one else holds the copyright, click the upload file button. After you upload it, Wikipedia editors will look over your image and make sure everything is in order. If anything is wrong with the description, they will let you know and ask you to fix it. To put the image in an article, type
[[Image:Example.jpg]]
, replacing Example.jpg with your image's filename. If you have any more technical questions about uploading files or any other technical aspects of editing Wikipedia, you can ask at the help desk. Also, please note that Wikipedia is not a free host or webspace provider. A few personal images for your user space are fine, but most images should be relevant to Wikipedia articles. --TantalumTelluride 22:41, 2 March 2006 (UTC)- Thanks. Janet 22:48, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

How is this different?
[edit]How is this different from Wikipedia:WikiProject Harry Potter or Portal:Harry Potter? -- Francs2000 00:42, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
This is a duplicate
[edit]I'm sorry but this is basically a duplicate of the above. Janet6, as you are the only contributor to the project page, you can request that this page be deleted, and I'm going to ask you to do so. However, I'd like to invite you to contribute to the WikiProject and the Harry Potter portal, as well as to all of the articles in the Harry Potter category on Wikipedia. Thanks. Ëvilphoenix Burn! 03:16, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
I have to concur. Janet6, you might want to join WikiProject Harry Potter, but ths is essentially a duplicate (and a very specific subset) of what we do up there. --Deathphoenix ʕ 20:04, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
- Or you could join Harry Potter Wiki, where your contributions would be very appreciated. Chosen One 12:27, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
Listed on MfD
[edit]As suggested here, I have listed this page for deletion. Janet6, please don't take this personally, it's just that this page duplicates efforts elsewhere. You are welcome to join Wikipedia:WikiProject Harry Potter or even on the Harry Potter Wiki, though the latter is outside of Wikipedia. --Deathphoenix ʕ 21:43, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
WikiPotter
[edit]Really sorry about WikiPotter. I hope you understand that any project in the Wikipedia namespace must comply with the Wikipedia policy and the Wikipedia rules, and it has to have the consent of Wikipedia administrators etc. So it's quite impossible to put up an oasis of informality in the factual Wikipedyan desert. If you like, though, you can move to the Harry Potter Wiki and invite other people to contribute, too. We're still developing the site, and still need writers, as some left for Wikipedia. It's your choice. See you around! Chosen One 20:32, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- Which is why you can move to the Harry Potter Wiki. If you can't get it into your head that what you're doing is against the rules, then we're sorry, but the problem is yourself. Chosen One 14:14, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Dates in Harry Potter
[edit]Please do not change the dates in Harry Potter articles. Wikipedia uses IRL dates for Harry Potter articles based on a calculation of Harry's birthday being July 31st, 1980. This is based on the interpretation of a line in Chamber of Secrets where Nearly-Headless Nick comments that Halloween in that book was his 500th deathday, and that he died in 1492, placing Chamber of Secrets in 1992, which extrapolating back from that places Harry's birthyear in 1980. This has been previously discussed on Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Harry Potter, and the use of 1980 is consistent throughout the articles. For the sake of maintaining this consistency, please do not change the dates without a Talk page discussion and a clear consensus to do so. Best regards, Ëvilphoenix Burn! 04:35, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

WikiPotter and hurt feelings
[edit]- I wanted to respond to your comments on Wikipedia talk:WikiPotter here rather than on that talk page. I want to reiterate pretty much what Evilphoenix said there and add a few comments of my own. We've had to deal with a fair bit of "fan edits" over the past several months, so I think maybe some of us are feeling a little burned out (I know I sure am). In addition, making mistakes because you're new is pretty common. Over a year ago, when I was fairly new, I wanted to start making fairly extensive rewrites of the various articles pertaining to David Eddings and his work, but I wanted to start off doing something small and certain. I saw what I was sure was a spelling mistake on a few articles about The Malloreon. I looked around a few of the talk pages to see if there was any discussion about the misspelling and saw none, so I learned how to move/rename articles and renamed that to The Mallorean. I also went to all the places where I saw the misspelling (including a template) and renamed all of those. Then I logged off Wikipedia. The next day I got a rather terse message from someone telling me that I was wrong and that this had already been discussed in Talk:David Eddings. Of all the talk pages, I didn't think of looking in the talk page of the author! Anyway, I was extremely embarassed by this mistake and immediately scaled back my plans. After writing a huge apology, I wrote or expanded a few articles about the races and places (like Riva, Drasnia, and so on) instead of going on my original grand plans. I guess what I'm trying to say is sometimes you can feel very hurt when it gets pointed out that what you're doing goes against what's been done on Wikipedia. I do feel very bad that you're hurt by all this, but, as in my original MfD notice, there is nothing personal by this. I know you did this with good intentions, and I hope you can apply your efforts in other ways, perhaps by joining our WikiProject. If you have any other questions, comments, or even criticism on how I've done things, please let me know. --Deathphoenix ʕ 08:15, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Hey There!
[edit]I just happened across one of your contributions and I thought I'd come over here to say hello and "meet" you. Please let me know if I can ever be of service. Best, Johntex\talk 17:25, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

The WikiPotter page
[edit]OK, I understand why everyone's so happy--my page got redirected to WikiProject Harry Potter. OK, so in the beginning I thought I was doing something good, but now Deathphoenix has helped me realize that I can try again and that mistakes are something to learn from (thanks :-)). Anyway, I felt very happy knowing I learned a lesson on Wikipedia. But...

- Nah, I've seen and received tons worse. But I think you'll end up doing ok anyway ;-). Welcome back. Ëvilphoenix Burn! 03:22, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
- Please don't quote out of context. Anyway, if you're willing to take up on the offer of editing on the HPWiki, then we'll be glad to welcome you there. And don't worry - everybody there isn't as "rude" as I am. Cheers - Chosen One 13:04, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
- I'm glad things are going okay for you. Like Evilphoenix (my evil twin, I'm the dead twin), I've had much worse, and I don't think Chosen One meant the way it sounded to you. Anyways, welcome back to North America, and we hope to see your contributions around! --Deathphoenix ʕ 15:09, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks. I have something that I need major feedback on--I've created an article and I need to know if the word "ass hole" is allowed in a movie article. Also, I need feedback on the entire article, because User:Jkelly stuck a verification tag on the article but she didn't explain why. Janet6 22:46, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
- Well, Wikipedia is not censored, so I don't think the word is intrinsically disallowed, but context also matters. The verification tag simply means that the article is not well cited, and needs to provide some sources for the assertions of information that it's making. Check out J. K. Rowling for an example of a fairly well cited article, it's one I've been working on personally for a while. The simplest thing to do would be to insert some inline citations linking to any websites that happen to be sources for your information. For example, something like this: Wikipedia is a website about lots of stuff [http:www.wikipedia.org]. That's the first step to getting an article verified, then you can go back later and format it prettily (or someone else might too). Ëvilphoenix Burn! 23:29, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Destrain Place article
[edit]I proposed deletion because it pretty clearly does not satisfy Wikipedia's notability requirements. A Google search for "destrain place" turns up less than 70 hits. Heh, I'm going to a restaurant in Irondequoit, NY tonight called "Keenan's" that I've never been to before, and guess what, it doesn't have a Wikipedia article ;)
Admittedly, I do see the value of inclusionism, i.e. keeping non-notable articles around. But as long as Wikipedia is totally free (and even ad-free), I'm going to abide by the rules of the people running the site... and according to those rules, I just don't see Destrain Place as being notable enough for an encyclopedia entry. ---Jaysweet 22:38, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Maintenance tag removal
[edit]Please do not remove maintenance notices from pages unless the required changes have been made. If you are uncertain whether the page requires further work, or if you disagree with the notice, please discuss these issues on the page's talk page before removing the notice from the page. These notices and comments are needed to establish community consensus about the status of a page. Thank you. Seraphimblade 21:17, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- Would imagine it might be pretty popular, sounds like some of the stuff I read in school. What would be necessary to establish notability, however, would be mention in non-trivial secondary sources. Newspaper reviews or the like are great for that type of thing on books. I'll see what I can find as well. Seraphimblade 21:22, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think deletion would be required, I've found some reviews and such that seem to establish notability, and verify effectively everything that's in the article. That's all it'll need! Seraphimblade 21:28, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Thank you. --Theunicyclegirl 19:03, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
==Proposed deletion of Peanuts characters birthdays==
A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Peanuts characters birthdays, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Fram (talk) 12:52, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
Unreferenced BLPs
[edit]Hello Janet6! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 52 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

AfD nomination of A Moment in History
[edit]An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is A Moment in History. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/A Moment in History. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.
Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:12, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
The article Phoebe McAuley has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- I cannot find any significant coverage in reliable source to show notability for this unreferenced biography of a living person.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Chzz ► 15:07, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
