I am not sure how to use these effectively, but if you look at some Featured Article examples (which can be found at WP:FA#Media and scroll down a bit until you get to the biographies), you will note that almost all FA articles use wikitables. It's the goal of any article in the WIki-En to become FA, and so I think that starting with that goal makes it easier to at least get to GA (Good Article) status.
